Oh the general consensus of the commenting world is the same. The only difference is here, there’s a bit more polish. McCain has lost the election and most certainly his mind. There’s a disrespect that’s shown toward Obama from McCain that’s evident to anyone who would care to open their eyes. It may be a little difficult for Republican America to wrap their minds around the idea of black President. Good.

Look, I grew up in the Deep South, Hattiesburg, Mississippi. My grandparents — The God™ love them — were typical members of the Southern Gulf Coast hoi-polloi, which brought with it a vague and unmenacing, but extremely entrenched, racism. They said “Negroes” in a way that sounded like “Nigruh,” something almost but not quite awful. In my teens, I’d call my grandmother to talk about my latest girlfriend and the first question she’d ask was, “Is she black?” And when she would talk about the sons and daughters of her own African-American housekeeper and cook — my grandparents were never without “help,” and took excellent financial and emotional care of them — she always said “That one.” Always. “Oh, Jeannie’s grandson? You know, that one?” Said with a wink, with a nod, with a smirk. Coded Southern scorn meant to distance the speaker from her subject.

That’s what I heard last night. John McCain is a dismissive, arrogant prick. He deserves to be beaten, and beaten hard, by That One.

That one? Was John McCain referring to an object? Not only did the phrase bother me, it was the way he said it! He built up the story nice and pretty, and you could see the climax building in his face with the words, “that one”, with the finger pointing, thinking he had a gotcha moment, and instead he had a senior/racist moment. I’m beginning to believe that some white people don’t realize when they are making racist statements. From birth all they have ever known was “we are better, smarter, and we are suppose to have more”! They have no idea when they are being condescending! When you think of others as being below you, the truth will come out of your mouth!

I agree. People at rallies calling for the death of his opponent is decidedly not small shit. But given that McCain and Palin not reacting to that is notable, I don’t see that his use of “That one” here really is.

He could have said “He did”. He could have followed up with “and not this one.” Or preceded with with “Which candidate voted for it?” Or any number of things that would have made it clear that he was distinguishing Obama from himself rather than making a dig.

Was that his intent? I dunno. But IMHO with all the other crap he’s pulling, this smacks of looking to take offense at something.

When McCain said “that one” he lost!!! “That one” while his campaign, especially Palin, is borderline hate filled at this point, might be considered a racist dig???? I dont know. I just thought it was the equivalent of “taking my ball home.”

It’s relevant for two reasons.

1) It’s a window into the level of McCain’s “hatred of the good for being the good,” good here referring to skill set and competence.

2) It’s a tell into how disconnected McCain is from the voters whom he (theoretically, if he’s not throwing this “accidentally on purpose”) wants to woo. It shows that he cannot lead this country if he blows stupid things like this; leadership means convincing the country, including the part of the country that disagrees with your general philosophy, that you are a credible leader of your nation. This just alienates people.

Imagine for a split second the wrath that would pour down on Obama had he said something equally disrespectful to McCain. “That one”, indeed.
