That's funny about Evergreen. I live up the road 30 miles or so. Everyone knows it's pretty liberal but folks don't much attention to it. It was basically set up as a retirement career for Dan Evans. He was a very popular Governor and most people don't hold the college against him, they just don't take it very seriously.

I don't think the community outside of Oly realizes that conventional liberals would find it somewhat radical. I don't think we realize we can compete with Berkeley.

We differ regarding attitudes of and about Mid East leaders. I imagine that they are fearful of McCain but see Obama more like Jimmy Carter. A paper tiger who will offer appeasement in the face of aggression.

And on a completely different note, no it's not a bad thing to post another picture of a cute chick. It's what Oliver does best.

Zython, because those are ILLEGAL, too -- just for a different reason. They are in violation of the $4,600 maximum any one individual can give. Campaigns don't have to report donations below $200, so those people gave smaller amounts over and over and over again until they ended up several multiples of the legal limit.

Here's how it works: If you're an American and give more than $4,600 to any candidate in any election cycle (half for the primary, half for the general), you're breaking the law. If you're not an American and you're giving ANY money to a candidate, you're breaking the law.

If you're a campaign and you're accepting illegal donations, then you're also breaking the law. But that's OK if you're Obama.

We are in agreement here. Just curious, since it is my neck of the woods, which PNW students are you referring to?

My girlfriend and I went to Evergreen in Olympia, Wash. before transferring. Yeah, bad idea. We're pretty liberal and they made us look like Attila the Hun. Other than that, students (of the political oriented types, at least) I've met from Seattle, Eugene, Corvallis, and Portland have all been well to my left. As in Bush-is-a-nazi type stuff. Although, to be fair, there may be something of a cherry-picking effect at work, since these were mostly students moved by their political activist tendencies to travel.

It would be interesting to find out if they think an Obama or McCain administration would further their own national ambitions.

I'm not that interested in what foreign leaders think of Sens. Obama or McCain with respect to their domestic political situations, though I would be interested in their respective positions on those topics that obey no border (climate change, terrorism, etc.). Needless to say it won't be playing into my voting decisions, and I question the logic of those for whom it will carry more sway.

If various disparate elements in the middle east have spoken kindly of Sen. Obama, I submit that those elements would probably rather not continue sending their youth (i.e. continuing to gut the future talent pool of their society) into suicide missions, and are hopeful that Sen. Obama will help to initiate a change in policy they can live with.

Interestingly enough I see that there is to be an announcement today regarding a complaint being filed with the FEC regarding Obama's foreign contributions.

And on that same note I see Ollie has a late breaking report of more Obama support from South America. She's cute and everything but this isn't really her affair. Any reason to put up a picture of a cute chick I suppose.

Sorry about your attention span problem there, Zython. In the very next sentence, I referred to the donations Obama’s collected from the Gaza Strip — which, last time I checked, is not part of the United States.

So why mention the first 2? Kicks?

I don't. I think there ought to be a great big money wall between the jurisdiction of elections, that is, only those who can vote in an election can give money to a candidate in that election. This principle ought to extend from the international level all the way down to towns with populations of 250 just voting for the mayor that will ride in the fourth of July parade and not do much else.

If foreign cash has been found to have entered an election, the moment that it's found out it should be mandated that that same amount be handed over by the candidate to whatever body in the jurisdiction whose job it is to make sure this stuff doesn't happen. That's a bit of a tortured sentence, but I hope the drift comes across.

I love this country, like 96% of everyone who lives in it (the other 4% are college students in the Pacific Northwest and Berkeley), which is why it makes me cranky when I feel like some among us are holding other nations to a higher standard than we hold ourselves. If anything, we ought to hold ourselves to a higher standard, eh?

I doubt that Pete has your grasp of State department policy. I suspect it is more a case of putting party before country, that the end justifies the means so long as it is beneficial to Obama.

But what of you Parthenon? Do you favor foreigners using campaign money money to influence our elections or would you prefer American leaders being chosen by legal American voters, you know actual citizens of the United States.

Pete thinks it’s a shame that foreigners aren’t legally allowed to try and influence our elections with their money. I wonder if that is a typical liberal desire or if the resident progressives here will condemn such activity.

Maybe he just read about this, and thought we'd, you know, apply the same rules of morality to ourselves as we do others.
