Every liberal pundit and her mother second-guessed Obama during and just after the debate: he should have been tougher, should have put the lying, patronizing old man in his place, should have floored him with a “knockout punch.” Even Josh Marshall said so, though he conceded that our man just wasn’t like that.
Yet the needle had dipped among independent voters every time McCain went negative, and Obama was the winner on most scoreboards.
Could it be that Barack’s political instincts are better than all the pundits’ and bloggers’? Or is his temperament–what seems to show in the photo–what the nation wants right now, having had its fill of the pugnacious and belligerent? I made fun of his simplistic, corny slogans, but this minority member with the outrageously inopportune name may defy all odds and, by virtue of his inherent calm, actually win this thing.
Mea culpa. I live-blogged it watching on MSNBC and called it more or less a tie and faulted Barack for not being tougher and attacking. I concede your point. The campaign was smarter and the victory showed up in the clips and commentary yesterday. I would be somewhat vindicated however, if it should turn out that polls believe McCain held his own or won.
Anotherbozo – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.
For the first time in my life, when I vote for Obama, it’ll be an honor to vote for a politician. I don’t agree with Barack on everything – I disagree strongly with him on a few things. BUT, this is a man I TRUST. I know EVEN when he does something I will not agree with I KNOW he will not be doing it lightly, without thought, without understanding the consequences.
Introducing: President Barack Obama of the United States of America! When THAT man enters the room – it will be an honor to stand up!

My legacy – hear, hear.
I figured out that one of the reasons I obsess about this campaign is that so much will be made RIGHT by the mere fact of Obama’s election. A signal to the world that we’re willing to act cooperatively, that we’re not just warmongers, that we can appreciate intelligence and even intellectuality, that in spite of our history of racism we are beginning to acknowledge the parity of the non-white peoples of the earth.
To a certain extent I will feel the relief of someone who has stopped having his head banged against the wall. But yes, like you I will be PERSONALLY proud of my country as I have never before.
I agee,MyLegacy and anotherbozo. I don’t know how old you guys are, but my first vote was cast for George McGovern in 1972. I have never felt so strongly about a candidate before. I voted for McGovern to end the war, Carter because of Watergate, Mondale because he wasn’t Reagan, etc. This is the first opportunity I’ve had to vote FOR somebody who really inspires me and makes me optimistic for my country.
Obama could be a real leader, like FDR or JFK. A real game-changer. He hasn’t let me down yet in this campaign. I don’t think he’ll let us down as President.
I was two years old when you cast your first vote, Bruce Henry.
I’ve kind of been an irregular voter, although I tried to remember to vote, but this is one of the first elections that I have been this interested in the candidates.
I don’t agree with everything Obama has said, either – but he gets my vote because I think that he won’t rush headlong into things without thinking them through. There is a difference between making a principled choice that goes against the grain and just being a contrary cuss. I know which attribute I look for in a President. Even if I don’t agree, at least I can understand his logic in taking the viewpoints he does.
Obama right before the debate looked at the vets bracelt he wore and said, “screw ‘em. if the family doesn’t like it, i’ll sue their asses for slander. i’ve got the best goon squad money can buy. nobody effs with der fuhrer.”
william… what is wrong with you?
Dear mambochicken:
Please excuse william today. He is a conservative, and therefore an idiot.
Thank you.
Stephen C Rose. kudos to you for owning up to something on a blog. More often than not, it is just left.
