Monkeywrench McCain

Everything points to the fact that drama queen McCain decided that working to scuttle the deal with his Republican allies is what’s needed to use our economy as a flimsy backdrop to McCain’s personal ambition. It’s the ultimate demonstration of Ego First. Oh, yeah, Washington Mutual has gone bellyup.

This is life in Bush-McCain America.

Hmm. Who was it that linked this quote?:

The director of the Congressional Budget Office said yesterday that the proposed Wall Street bailout could actually worsen the current financial crisis.

During testimony before the House Budget Committee, Peter R. Orszag — Congress’s top bookkeeper — said the bailout could expose the way companies are stowing toxic assets on their books, leading to greater problems.

‘Ironically, the intervention could even trigger additional failures of large institutions, because some institutions may be carrying troubled assets on their books at inflated values,’ Orszag said in his testimony. ‘Establishing clearer prices might reveal those institutions to be insolvent.’

I guess a monkeywrench is what we needed to step back and take a little bit harder look at this thing.

By the way- Washington Mutual is one of those companies that went hogwild, apeshit crazy with the Barney Frank, let’s see how much easy mortgage money we can give to credit and asset challenged people, home loans. A broker wanted to get a ‘creative’ deal done? They’s send it to WAMU- they’d find a way to fund it. And now they go “belly up.” I guess my heart isn’t bleeding for them as much as maybe their employeees.
But hey, Oliver- if you and your fellow Democrats want to bail out all those fat cats on Wall Street, perhaps you should write to your Senators and your favorite Congressmen.

Here we have the “Wall Street” wing of the Republican party and the Democrats wanting to make a deal. For VERY DIFFERENT reasons.

The Wall Street guys want to save their million dollar bonuses and the Democrats want to save the PENSIONS of the millions and millions of Americans that have contributed over the years. The “Wal-Mart/ Religious Wingnut” part of the Rebublican party wants to let the whole thing fall – they say: “a pox on all their houses – bring on the rapture!”

Personally, I think most of us are disgusted and would love to see (in my case) the Millionaires fall on their swords and many would like to see all those bastards that saved for their retirement fall on their swords. I don’t think America as we know it – or Capitalism as we know it will survive a meltdown.

In fact – I predict that Capitalism – as we know it (unregulated gangs shorting markets to make billions) is FINISHED. At the very least THAT will lead to some improvement.

See, this is the kind of shit that created “Reagan Democrats” in the late 70’s: Incompetent government, and a sense that the Fed was re-distributing wealth from the richest to the poorest.

Now in 2008, it’s the Republican party in the form of Johnathan Sydney McCain III who’s doing his best to solve this fabricated “emergency” (well, it _is_ a real emergency, but the need to bail out Wall Street _right away_ or we all will starve to death is complete bullshit) by literally giving Wall Street trillions (it’ll be that much before it’s over, trust me) of taxpayers’ dollars. Just takin’ all that cash and dumping it into Manhattan. Centralized banking. Stalinst/Communist wealth redistribution at its finest.

This is the Republican party ca. 2008 — no principles, just a desire to take money from your pocket and give it to somebody who is 99% likely to be wealthier than you. Ronald Reagan would vomit.

  5. Mylegacy says:

Jaim – you’re right about Reagan throwing up now.

BUT – it was his deregulate/cut taxes/increase spending and then just smile and say something witty that brought over some Democrats to whom a nice smile and platitutes were more important than RATIONAL GOVERNMENT that caused this downward spiral!

Today we are suffering from the BRAINLESS IDIOTS who voted for Reagan – and then stayed with the Repubs – and thought his (and Repub) contempt of government was COOL.

The ONLY country in the Free World with millions of children uninsured, the ONLY country in the Free World without Universal Healthcare. The ONLY country in the Free World without significant and REAL maternity leave, The ONLY country in the Free World without at LEAST 5 weeks vacation for everyone, The Only country in the Free World that has WILLINGLY let all their jobs go overseas.

ALL BECAUSE REAGAN MADE IT FASHIONABLE FOR MORON’S – to massively vote against their own interest. Hopefully – the Morons will start to realize they fu*ked up – big time.

“Everything points to the fact that drama queen McCain decided that working to scuttle the deal with his Republican allies is what’s needed to use our economy as a flimsy backdrop to McCain’s personal ambition.”

According to The Politico, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) completely dismissed McCain’s role in the meeting, saying that he spoke last, said nothing important and had little to do with the negotiations.”

Marc Ambinder, The Atlantic: Though Sen. Chris Dodd implied that Sen. McCain sandbagged the rest of the negotiators by bringing up alternative proposals, McCain himself did not bring up those proposals, according to four independent sources briefed by four different principals inside the meeting, including two Republicans and two Democrats.

“McCain has not attacked the Paulson deal,” said a third Republican who was briefed by McCain direclty. “Unlike the [Democrats] in the [White House] meeting, he didn’t raise his voice or cause a ruckus. He is urging all sides to come together.”

“Everything?” How about “the information that backs up my prejudices.”

Sometimes I wonder if you have trouble telling the difference between exaggeration, hyperbole, and out-adn-out lying. Kind of like how you cling to the fictions of “John McCain owns 13 cars” and “John McCain doesn’t know how many homes he owns” and “John McCain is too old and too stupid to use a computer.”

Oh, and could someone point out to me just what part Barack Obama — Senator and titular head of the Democratic party — is playing in all this?

“McCain has not attacked the Paulson deal,” said a third Republican who was briefed by McCain direclty. “Unlike the [Democrats] in the [White House] meeting, he didn’t raise his voice or cause a ruckus. He is urging all sides to come together.”

Jay Tea, please read this sentence again and try to tell us all what’s wrong with it.

  8. fafaroo says:

For bonus points, please tell us how “declining to take a stand” as the American economy, apparently, hangs in the balance, demonstrates leadership:

Mr. Boehner pressed an alternative that involved a smaller role for the government, and Mr. McCain, whose support of the deal is critical if fellow Republicans are to sign on, declined to take a stand.

Then we have this, later in the story:

But a top aide to Mr. Boehner said it was Democrats who had done the political posturing. The aide, Kevin Smith, said Republicans revolted, in part, because they were chafing at what they saw as an attempt by Democrats to jam through an agreement on the bailout early Thursday and deny Mr. McCain an opportunity to participate in the agreement.

Wait, what? If McCain wasn’t allowed an opportunity to participate in the agreement then Republicans were going to block it? That’s putting country first? Putting the ego of one senator over what we’ve been told is tantamount to saving the economy, is not playing politics? Really?

So these republicans came up with their own plan outside of the main legislative negotiations going on, one that they were going to let McCain in on. Paulson, Dodd, Pelosi and maybe even the President had no idea this was happening. But John McCain did:

At 4 p.m., Mr. Bush convened his meeting at the White House; Mr. McCain had already met with House Republicans to hear their concerns. He later said on ABC that he had known going into the White House that “there never was a deal,” but he kept that sentiment to himself.

He kept that sentiment to himself? Why the fuck, if the entire economy of the United States was hanging in the balance, would McCain wait until this supposedly crucial meeting for this news to be announced? Wouldn’t it have been far more helpful to bring the two sides together earlier? Maybe hold off on the meeting until everyone was aware of what else was being proposed? Maybe even try to get the two sides talking? But what did McCain do during the meeting:

Mr. McCain was at one end of the long conference table, Mr. Obama at the other, with the president and senior Congressional leaders between them. Participants said Mr. Obama peppered Mr. Paulson with questions, while Mr. McCain said little.

McCain said little. Some fucking leadership. Jesus.

And before I sign off for the evening, I take back everything I ever said about the Palin-AIP you tube ad. I now believe it is the key to bringing down the Obama campaign.

Jay Tea, your country needs you now more than ever and I think everyone here would agree that what the country needs you doing the most is spending the rest of the election eating cheetos in your mom’s basement carefully “analyzing” voice modulations in campaign commercials.

Remember, Jay Tea. Country first. Country first.

  10. Jaim says:

Jay, thanks for asking about Obama, the man who’s a lot more qualified to be POTUS than McCain. He was doing his damn job: asking questions, gathering information, trying to learn more about the complexities of the deregulation fiasco. McCain? Sounds like he was doing nothing more than posturing, clinging to a false hope that he could “save” his ridiculous, idiotic stunt by timing his appearance in Washington with a new bill.

What’s extremely clear now is that McCain going back to DC to “save” our country is just utter bullshit. This is a huge mess, and no single person is going to get this stuff lined up over night. It’s clear that all McCain wants, when faced with a huge economic meltdown, is a photo-op. He’s a selfish politican through and through.

Like I’ve said before, you really should vote for Bob Barr. He’s a wing-nut too, but one that still has some principles left. McCain? He ain’t got none of ‘em left. Too desperate to gain power, he’s forgotten all about any individual streak he used to have.

    fafaroo

No one, fafaroo, no one, said it was key to bringing down the Obama campaign. It was never more than a strong suspicion that David Axelrod was participating in a sleazy astroturfing campaign to spread vicious and untrue rumors about Sarah Palin and exposing him for what he is.

It’s no different than the left’s attempt in 2004 to tie the SBVT’s directly back to the Bush campaign. That went mainstream, if you recall. Of course, it was Karl Rove. You guys seem to think David Axelrod is above this sleaziness, but he’s not, and he’s been caught at it before.

  12. william says:

Thank god someone put a monkey wrench in this steaming pile of excrement –

Lindsey Graham – “Twenty percent of the money that should go to retire debt that will be created to solve this problem winds up in a housing organization called ACORN that is an absolute ill-run enterprise, and I can’t believe we would take money away from debt retirement to put it in a housing program that doesn’t work.”

ACORN!? You gotta be frickin’ kidding…

  13. Zython says:

Making sure that the people that got us in this mess don’t remain in power?

    Oh, and what fafaroo said.

  14. PD100 says:

    Prove it now.

Gosh, Dennis thanks for pointing out that my sarcasm was exaggerated.

That went mainstream, if you recall.

Yeah, and I recall that all the SBVT did was post a crappy video on you tube.

Hold up. So Obama was there also? Why is it McCain is stealing all this thunder about riding into DC on a white horse to save the day while Obama is off bowling somewhere?
If Obama was there also, and awake, and asking questions – tough questions – why is that not being reported?

  17. PD100 says:

Where in the BW article does it say that Axelrod was behind the Winner/Palin video?
