McCain/Palin Lying About Crowd Sizes

No honor, no truth from John McCain.

Senator John McCain has drawn some of the biggest crowds of his presidential campaign since adding Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to his ticket on Aug. 29. Now officials say they can’t substantiate the figures McCain’s aides are claiming.

McCain aide Kimmie Lipscomb told reporters on Sept. 10 that an outdoor rally in Fairfax City, Virginia, drew 23,000 people, attributing the crowd estimate to a fire marshal.

Fairfax City Fire Marshal Andrew Wilson said his office did not supply that number to the campaign and could not confirm it. Wilson, in an interview, said the fire department does not monitor attendance at outdoor events.

In recent days, journalists attending the rallies have been raising questions about the crowd estimates with the campaign. In a story on Sept. 11 about Palin’s attraction for some Virginia women voters, Washington Post reporter Marc Fisher estimated the crowd to be 8,000, not the 23,000 cited by the campaign.

Amazing how they leave out what the rest of what Fisher said:

The crowd, which I counted at 8,000 but which police estimated at 23,000

I mean really. This what you’re reduced to at this point? Disputing crowd sizes?

    Talk about a sinking ship.

  2. The 23,000 comes from McCain, who cited the fire marshall who says that number didn’t jibe.

I mean really. This is what McCain’s campaign is reduced to at this point: lying about crowd sizes.

    Talk about a sinking ship.

The fire marshal did not say the “number didn’t jibe.” He merely said that they don’t do those estimates. I’ve read several articles that cite the police estimating the crowd size to be 20K . I guess the police are lying as well.

Next, Oliver will claim that John McCain’s penis size isn’t what he claims.

Jesus, for somebody who is so confident in the outcome, you sure seem to be throwing more than your normal amount of BS up against the wall to see if it sticks.

  7. essrog says:

If the police really came up with the number, why did the McCain campaign falsely attribute the number to the fire marshall’s office?

Is it more of the same incompetence? Could be, but it’s more likely they’re just used to lying

Sen. McCain made the impressive (in terms of sheer chutzpah, at least) claim the other day that the Governor knows more about energy policy than just about anybody in the country. Combine that with the last week or so of straight personality politics, and I’m skeptical as to whose hull is in more trouble.

If they lie about this, they will lie about anything.

  10. Parthenon says:

Slightly more on topic, 15,000 seems like an enormous discrepancy between estimates. Could the journalist have estimated it at about a third its actual size? Seems more likely to me that, if anything, the campaign high-balled it and the journalist kinda low-balled it.

Well, Caribou Barbie is in Carson City today. People are already lining up for an area that can hold 2,000. The Nevada GOP is saying there will be 10,000 in attendance.

See how the game is played?

I’ve never seen any Obama campaign rally making predictions in advance like that when he’s been here.

McCain – lying daily to get his hands that can’t keyboard on that red button in the Oval Office.

Yeah. It’s really unbelievable how folks will actually call McCain and Co on thier BS. Don’t the Dems know that that isn’t how they’re supposed to play the game? Shame on them.

McCain would lie about which direction is west or what day of the week it is.
