You really have to have someone explain it to you Hedley? It isn't in oil companies best interest to drill much of this now, while oil is relatively cheap. They want to hoard leases so that when gas is $7-10 gallon they will have a cheap supply. It isn't in oil company's best interests to increase supply. That is why refineries are taken offline for "maintenance" at the peak of demand.

Key concept there, Duros, "existing leases." There are areas with potential reserves that are not the subject of existing leases. But here, don't get up, I'll get it for you:

"The majority of these unexploited acres are currently inaccessible by pipeline and much of the land has dubious production value."

And why did they lease it in the first place? Who knows, but don't you think if there were significant reserves in the areas not being drilled that someone would be drilling there? What about new areas that are not presently leased?

And before some troll claims, "That's not where the oil is!", I just have to ask, preemptively, why did they lease it in the first place?

don't get up, Hedley, I'll get it for you.

A “Use it or Lose It” Approach to Existing Oil and Gas Leases.

Obama will require oil companies to develop the 68 million acres of land (over 40 million of which are offshore) which they have already leased and are not drilling on.

That's wicked. Anyone know where to send a resume?

what practical choice do we have but to clean things up as best as possible and try to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by more drilling at the same time?

Totally agree. That's why I'm voting for Obama. Glad you're on board, Hedley.

And were will all the windmills and Solar panels and hydroelectric dams be built? On public lands. And who is in charge of those lands? The same Dept. of the Interior.

Since at present there is no realistic alternative to doing business with the oil industry (accepting for purposes of argument your actual premise that the oil industry is inherently evil) what practical choice do we have but to clean things up as best as possible and try to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by more drilling at the same time?

If we keep in business with the oil industry this will happen, but on a bigger scale, again and again.

So why can't we clean up the Interior Dept. and increase drilling? Why is it one or the other?
