The newest state polls show movement for McCain, but the only one I would be concerned about is Virginia. I think just based on demographics and recent trends and the secret plan to send Marylanders to Northern VA (oh, did I say that out loud?), Obama will win Virginia, but it remains to be seen. I wonder how many people will go to the polls voting for Mark Warner, who will win in a walk, and also vote for McCain. Like Kaine there my bet is Obama will win on Warner’s coattails. But yeah, no time to jump out the window in despair – elections to win.
I won’t lose sleep over a four-to-six point defecit when McCain’s bounce is at or near its apex.
Our party’s always on defense. Time to use the 5 WR set
It looks like even the Wall Street Journal is growing a bit tired of the Palinpalooza:
“The GOP Loves the Heartland to Death”

“Leave the fantasy land of convention rhetoric, and you will find that small-town America, this legendary place of honesty and sincerity and dignity, is not doing very well. If you drive west from Kansas City, Mo., you will find towns where Main Street is largely boarded up. You will see closed schools and hospitals. You will hear about depleted groundwater and massive depopulation.
And eventually you will ask yourself, how did this happen? Did Hollywood do this? Was it those “reporters and commentators” with their fancy college degrees who wrecked Main Street, U.S.A.?
No. For decades now we have been electing people like Sarah Palin who claimed to love and respect the folksy conservatism of small towns, and yet who have unfailingly enacted laws to aid the small town’s mortal enemies.”
As a Northern Virginia resident I will do my part to bring Virginia in for the Democratic party.
As an interesting aside, a guy I worked with on the Wilson Bridge project just got his Citizenship, and He’s looking forward to casting his first ballot, in Virginia for Barak Obama.
This race is a lot closer than I’d like. Still, in relative terms, it’s very early. Second, McCain has peaked. He fire up his base, but alienated swing voters by picking up a radical creationist like Palin.
It’s gonna be interesting. Obama needs to get back out there and start swinging, however. “McSame” isn’t the most brilliant message, but it’s an effective one. Hell, throw in some Reagan too: “Are you better off than you were eight years ago?”
The latest poll had McOld up 15 among independents so your claim of “alienating swing voters” isn’t quite reality-based
Please go back to 1984 and remember how the Mondale-Ferarro ticket, experiencing a very similar surge in the polls, swept to victory over Reagan-Bush!
This is like Obama in New Hampshire with Hillary beating him. A few weeks later and Hillary was scrambling. Again, a very close election.
Unfortunately, It’s Republicans this time. They’ll do anything to win. Palin is Bush with Big Hair as Garrison Keillor said in Salon.
It’s dire for Obama, but we need to fight for him in the battleground states.
If Obama loses sadly it will be a setback for racial equality as it seems white lower class angst in border/battleground states close to the northern edge of the confederacy are crucial in this contest.
Southern Ohio! Alone can define this race. Without more resources there, Obama (and Howard Dean) are cooked.
Obama on the attack! That’s good. Speak to the People!
