However, Sen. Biden and Sen. Obama voted for funding the Bridge, even when given a second chance by Sen. Tom Coburn, who proposed shifting earmark funds to Katrina relief.

Sen. McCain did not vote on the Coburn Amendment, though he is on record as opposing the Ketchikan bridge earmark.

The media is in cahoots with the GOP and the money train so there’s no reason to believe they’d do anything to imperil that windfall.

Soooo, in other words she was ok with the bridge to nowhere when federal taxpayers were paying for it. Isn’t that pretty much Obama has been pointing out? That she in fact “rejected” the earmark because it wasn’t big enough?

The Republicans I’ve met would look at a homeless person on the street and pass them by without helping. “Why should I help them? No one’s helping me.” They say. And then they pass by. A Democrat would look at the homeless person and give them some money to at least get some food for the night. Or donate money to churches and organizations that would help that homeless person. The Republicans I’ve met would not.

McCain wants to make the tax codes permanent for the rich and heck with helping the middle class or anyone in the poverty class. Palin would want to pump money into abstinent only programs and heck with sex-education. These folks are very limited in their views as to how to help this country. And my greatest fear is that under a McCain admin we would be more likely to go to war with Iran.

When these lies are told a good reporter should point this out and ask the candidate that is “stretching the truth” or downright “lying” about this. Not stand idly by saying nothing.

The media is complicit in this by being more interested in “tabloid” journalism.

The proposed Gravina Island Bridge, also known as the “Bridge to Nowhere,” became a national symbol of wasteful congressional spending and driver of earmark reform. On Sept. 21, 2007, the State of Alaska officially abandoned the controversial project.

The Gravina Island Bridge initially received $223 million in 2005 via earmarks by Alaska Senators Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski. The bridge would have connected Ketchikan, Alaska with its local airport on nearby Gravina Island (population 50). Congress stripped the earmark after a national uproar about it but appropriated the money anyway for unspecified transportation uses. Former Gov. Frank Murkowski’s administration set aside about $113 million of the appropriation for the Ketchikan bridge. However, Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.
