Obama Campaign Uses The “L” Word Again

12:33 pm EST September 8th, 2008 | News | 19 Comments

John McCain is lying about his running mate’s advocacy for the bridge to nowhere. Wow, see Dems? It ain’t that hard to say someone is lying when they are, in fact, lying.

How many more times will McCain repeat the “sold the plane on ebay for a profit!” story

  2. Jaime says:

Definitely not the first time the McCain campaign has lied.

  3. slumreport says:

So when does he bring up McCain’s wanting to get rid of unemployment compensation when 1 in 10 people are out of work. (I know, they say it’s only 6.1% but that is known to be way off. ) If people heard McCain considered unemployment comp to be an outmoded concept from the 50′s they might reconsider their votes. People vote with their wallets as well.

  4. durablend says:

McCain will keep saying it as long as it looks like the stupid sheep will keep buying it

  5. OW:
I don’t want to join the pearl clutching brigade, but this is exactly the stuff some of us have been advocating for a while. McCain is indeed lying. And don’t preface any critiques with saying what a great guy McCain is. It undercuts the message that McCain is a lying, corrupt, out of touch fool.

Totally off-topic here, but is anyone else seeing an ad for “Obama Barack Ringtones”? Ignoring the error in his name, what the hell is a Barack Obama ringtone? If I get one, will my phone give me excerpts from his speeches? Or would it be that song by Ludacris? I hope it’s the former because I’d love to hear “Even if I wanted to take your guns I won’t have the votes in Congress to do it,” every time my wife calls me.

Other lies that they could start flagging:

“Obama is planning to raise your taxes.”

“Democrats want to increase the size of government.”

“Obama sponsored no major legislation, either in the state legislature or in the Senate.”

“Obama has no record of bipartisanship.”

Those just off the top of my head. My friends.

  8. Dolly Parton says:

Demorats have always believed in increasing government programs. Someone needs to do their homework. What legislation did Obama sponsor and pass? What kind of record of leadership does Obama have?

    Alaskan Democratic Party says otherwise:

    From RetireTed.com:

Ted Earmarked Funds for Bridge that Goes Nowhere

    * Stevens championed proposed bridge near Ketchikan that became national symbol of wasteful spending

    * Sen. Murkowski’s family would benefit personally from the bridge

    * State of Alaska killed bridge

The proposed Gravina Island Bridge, also known as the “Bridge to Nowhere,” became a national symbol of wasteful congressional spending and driver of earmark reform. On Sept. 21, 2007, the State of Alaska officially abandoned the controversial project.

The Gravina Island Bridge initially received $223 million in 2005 via earmarks by Alaska Senators Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski. The bridge would have connected Ketchikan, Alaska with its local airport on nearby Gravina Island (population 50). Congress stripped the earmark after a national uproar about it but appropriated the money anyway for unspecified transportation uses. Former Gov. Frank Murkowski’s administration set aside about $113 million of the appropriation for the Ketchikan bridge. However, Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.

The republicans will continue to repeat the “lies” until people believe them. That has become the republican platform and I do not understand why the media stands by and allows this to happen.

When these lies are told a good reporter should point this out and ask the candidate that is “stretching the truth” or downright “lying” about this. Not stand idly by saying nothing.

The media is complicit in this by being more interested in “tabloid” journalism.

  11. Steven P. says:

A McCain administration will be worse than Bush’s. McCain is not a moderate as he is now pandering to the far right conservative evangelical base.

The Republicans I’ve met would look at a homeless person on the street and pass them by without helping. “Why should I help them? No one’s helping me.” They say. And then they pass by. A Democrat would look at the homeless person and give them some money to at least get some food for the night. Or donate money to churches and organizations that would help that homeless person. The Republicans I’ve met would not.

McCain wants to make the tax codes permanent for the rich and heck with helping the middle class or anyone in the poverty class. Palin would want to pump money into abstinent only programs and heck with sex-education. These folks are very limited in their views as to how to help this country. And my greatest fear is that under a McCain admin we would be more likely to go to war with Iran.

You know, I remember emailing Ted Stevens at the time and asking him to drop this proposal and instead, earmark the money for Katrina relief and repair of New Orleans’ infrastructure.

    funny, he never replied.

  13. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.

    Sooooo, where’d the money go?

  14. Parthenon says:

My best guess is other highway projects in Alaska, if it’s even moved yet at all. That appears to be what they want to do with it, anyway.

  15. Enlightened Liberal says:

“However, Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.”

Soooo, in other words she was ok with the bridge to nowhere when federal taxpayers were paying for it. Isn’t that pretty much Obama has been pointing out? That she in fact “rejected” the earmark because it wasn’t big enough?

  16. durablend says:

    angie,

The media is in cahoots with the GOP and the money train so there’s no reason to believe they’d do anything to imperil that windfall.

    Alaskan Democratic Party says otherwise:

Nice cite william, but I can’t find the part where she “told Congress thanks, but no thanks.”

    funny, he never replied.

Looks like Senator Coburn (R) acted on your request, Duros:

Though Gov. Palin originally supported the earmark spending on the Ketchikan bridge (“to nowhere), she eventually killed the project, chosing to spend Federal money on other infrastructure programs.

However, Sen. Biden and Sen. Obama voted for funding the Bridge, even when given a second chance by Sen. Tom Coburn, who proposed shifting earmark funds to Katrina relief.

Sen. McCain did not vote on the Coburn Amendment, though he is on record as opposing the Ketchikan bridge earmark.

  19. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“Though Gov. Palin originally supported the earmark spending on the Ketchikan bridge (“to nowhere)…”

And she keeps lying about this part.
