UPDATE: In case you’re wondering, the AP got their GOP talking points.
John McCain, a POW turned political rebel, vowed Thursday night to vanquish the “constant partisan rancor” that grips Washington as he launched his fall campaign for the White House. “Change is coming,” he promised the roaring Republican National Convention and a prime-time television audience.
He;s such a rebel he supports the unpopular president. And that crowd – sparsely filling the arena – hardly roared. I must have missed the notice where the AP became a wholly owned subsidiary of the RNC.
’)
John McCain’s speech was about fighting, war, POW, bla bla bla..and he used every cliche since 1928 which really does not connect with today’s world. McCain’s scars are not a prerequisite for intelligent policy and legislature and he is not the right man to lead this country.
Commence the poo flinging!
oh, the green screen… and then the blue screen.
truly a gift. can’t wait for colbert tomorrow.
It’s the economy, stupid!
I swear at the end he was just shouting random platitudes. But my favorite moment was this, about Sarah Palin:
Hmmm, it looks like Barack needs Hillary after all.
I wonder what she will demand in return.
I did like how her people cautioned Obama not to expect too much from her. “Hillary’s got a lot of other commitments right now” or words to that effect.
Did you notice at the end how the crowd was chanting “USA, USA”. I seem to recall the chant during Barack’s speech was “O BA MA, O BA MA”
Country before party. Or vice versa.
Actually, the USA chant went up numerous times during the Democratic convention. But continue to make shit up, it’s amusing.
But continue to make shit up, it’s amusing.</i<
But I’ll never be as good at it as you, Oliver.
I bow to the master.
Hmmm, it looks like Barack needs Hillary after all.
Maybe that whole “F*ck the PUMAs if they won’t get in line” thing was a little premature.
Maybe that whole “F*ck the PUMAs if they won’t get in line” thing was a little premature.
You mean the McCain supporters pretending to be Hillary supporters? Heaven forbid we not listen to their every whim? Oh noez!
Hey Dave, how come there RNC didn’t feature 80,000 People waving the Flag on its final day? I think we need to ask, why do Republicans hate the Flag, is John McCain the only Republican who even cares about America?
True story (which I preface by saying I don’t find the POW experience amusing in any way, just the milking of said experience) –
I caught exactly three seconds of the speech, as I had to work tonight. But as I walked past the television, there was that familiar voice saying “-and they put me in a cell…”
What a crazy coincidence, huh?
Oliver Willis wrote:I must have missed the notice where the AP became a wholly owned subsidiary of the RNC.
You missed this?
Fournier returned to the AP in March 2007 “in the newly created role of Online Political Editor”. In a memo announcing his return, AP executive editor Kathleen Carroll stated that “his primary responsibilities will be developing new approaches to political and election coverage online, working with AP’s news, multimedia and revenue groups.”[4] (In October 2006, prior to returning to AP, Fournier was approached to see if he was interested in a “senior advisory role” in communications for John McCain’s presidential campaign.)
One would be hard-pressed to call McCain’s speech ‘Palin-esque’, the new standard for political speeches, but it was on the whole very effective and appealing to his middle class targeted audience.
Coming on the heels of the most widely-viewed speeches of all time, 40 MILLION PEOPLE, it would be near impossible for McCain to generate anywhere close to the level of excitement from the night before in comparison.
In this case, low-key and informative was the way to go.
He doesn’t get it. The Republican faithful doesn’t think Bush did anything wrong. They stayed the course for the victory Bush and McCain promised them would come. Now McCain wants to highjack Obama’s message because people seem to want it (Change). Now he wants to put his brand on the Change message and tell the Republican faithful who doesn’t want it, along with Independents and Hillary voters that I’ll give you everything Obama has promised you. He doesn’t get it.
When the protester was removed and McCain said to ignore the “brown noise,” I got online and put in a Google search “did John McCain Republican National Convention just say brown noise” and I found several live chatrooms that responded to “brown noise” in the way I did. White Elitist that will ignore people of color.
John McCain sounded out of touch, dillusional, boring, dishonest. He looked like a thief and he’s the White guy. He looked like a thief trying to steal Obama’s vision, message but not his stamina or sincerity.
John McCain’s final plea to be president was I suffered as a POW for America. I loved America at the Hanoi Hilton and I have the war scars and wounds to prove it. I deserve to be president more than that young Black guy who has more opportunities left to be president. I am 72 years old, my mother is 96, please let me become president and make my mommy more proud of me.
My response is “Sorry Charlie, today you are not capable or ready to lead.
As far a Obama needing Hillary. I agree with Huffington Post. Democrats need to ignore her. If the fight is between McCain and Obama and Obama wins.
Let’s talk about Cindy McCain’s speech vs. Michelle Obama. Another Obama TKO.
[...] Oh… Oh god… I think O-dub’s right, train wreck is what it’s turning out to be. [...]
good one, Juhar.
I am glad Dave from So Cal is around….he’s maybe thinking of dumping McCain too. I see no bounce from this convention for McCain…due to “worse acceptance speech since Jimmy Carter’s in ‘80″ according to one CNN newscaster. I fell asleep in the middle of it. And as I posted before, (I don’t know if Oliver scrubbed that one…?) McCain looked angry, pitifully uncomfortable so much I felt sorry for him. That is not the kind of President we need in the coming economic debacle.
McCain’s solution is War: “Fight with me, Fight with me…..” and if Track Palin is a Prop he’ll need more foot soldiers to join McCain’s Fight…. a 100 Years of War is McCain’s motto.
So someone who has memorized left wing talking points is disappointed in McCain — didn’t see that coming!
And, thanks for the glimpse into what passes for reporting at CNN …
“Ain’t no liberal bias ’round here…”
I thought this line sums it up perfectly :

One would be hard-pressed to call McCain’s speech ‘Palin-esque’
…unless one was thinking about Michael Palin as Mr. DP Gumby looking for a brain doctor.
“Let me warn you and let me warn the nation against the smooth evasion which says: ‘Of course we believe all these things; we believe in social security; we believe in work for the unemployed ; we believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things; but we do not like the way the present Administration is doing them. Just turn them over to us. We will do all of them—we will do more of them —we will do them better; and, most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything. . . .’
FDR, 1936
Yeah Frank, good call. Link to some asshat from the National Review who comes across as trying to convince himself of his own bullshit. Nice. Big surprise that the National Review is mocking of Obama and speaking glowingly of McCain. Biiiiig surprise. Total shocker.
“A Woman’s Right to Murder Her Unborn Baby for Her Own Personal Convenience Shall Not Be Infringed.”
Nice. Fucking. Balls.
You mean the McCain supporters pretending to be Hillary supporters? Heaven forbid we not listen to their every whim? Oh noez!
You’ve really convinced yourself of that, haven’t you? That they’re all just secret McCain supporters. I guess all their time and money spent supporting Hillary are just a big super-secret undercover operation orchestrated by McCain’s campaign. It does makes it easier to dismiss them, I suppose.
Come November, I guess we’ll see whether you were right. ‘Cause if you’re wrong… Ouch! It’s gonna sting.
Only saw part of his speech, being on the other side of the world and all. Obama has been more than gracious in acknowledging McCain’s wartime service. But — the Vietnam reflections reminded me of 2004. Republicans smeared John Kerry, also wounded (not a five-year POW, I know) in that war with the “Purple Heart Band-Aid” thing.
So, OW.com Republi-trolls, please explain to me and America — if fighting and being wounded in a war is the primary qualification for being POTUS (that’s the gist I picked up from McCain’s speech), why would anybody have voted for Bush II rather than Kerry? Serious question, but I won’t accept the answer that “ZOMG HE SHOT HIMSELF!!!” He served admirably too, much moreso than Bush II in the National Guard.
On another note, Republicans have pretended since Rush announced a McCain nomination was the “death of the GOP” that they wouldn’t vote for the guy. Everybody knew they would come around. But I think any “bump” will largely be confined to party faithful. I don’t see any undecided voters getting motivated for McCain after this (pretty awfully delivered) speech.
Next stop: The Debates!
Since John McCain didn’t love his country until he was a POW it’s no surprise he chose a secessionist as his running mate. The GOP showed the OKC bombing in addition to the 9/11 gravytraining but didn’t mention Todd Palin being a registered AIP member after that
It was amusing that he spent so much time discussing his life as a POW, yet like Bush, Thompson, Palin, and the rest – the word “torture” was not that used. So, to use the administration’s logic, what McCain suffered was pretty bad, but it does not amount to torture.
And then, he seemed to skip over his entire career as a Senator, 25 years and nothing to show for it I guess.
And the repetition of “I will fight, I’m a fighter” Sorry Mac – we need a winner.
Mambochicken: Why are you all excited? I never said the line was impartial, or that the column it came from was factual … I just said it was apt…
Get a grip! Only one candidate can win, and it was never going to be Obama …
Don’t you get it? America isn’t ready for an Afro-American Hawaiian Indonesian President in 2008 …
We’re all racists, and would never vote for an almost black candidate, right?
When the protester was removed and McCain said to ignore the “brown noise,” I got online and put in a Google search “did John McCain Republican National Convention just say brown noise” and I found several live chatrooms that responded to “brown noise” in the way I did. White Elitist that will ignore people of color.
He said “Ground noise and static”. I just watched it again on You Tube. See for yourself. Watch his lips, it’s obvious to see that he didn’t purse his lips to make the ‘b’ sound for “brown”.
Sorry to disappoint you.
And yeah, I see that several other people heard “brown” too. Guess what, when you’re constantly straining your ears to hear “code words” and “dog whistles”, you’re gonna get a lot of false alarms.
Sarah Palin in her speech said she couldn’t name a major law, in Obama’s short time in the Senate, that Obama passed.
John McCain in his speech couldn’t name a major law in over 26 years that he passed in the Senate either.
Juhar: Maybe that’s because McCain is running for President, not Community Organizer – in – Chief …
Probably because at least some of them have the name “McCain” as part of their name (e.g. McCain-Feingold Act).
“Probably because at least some of them have the name “McCain” as part of their name (e.g. McCain-Feingold Act).”
Which the Republican party opposed en masse, and which McCain skirted during the primaries.
Look, the man didn’t say anything he had done or will do for Americana.
How many times do we have to go back 40 years and relive the POW story with him. I honor his service so can we give him a Congress Medal of Honor or Freedom as the Best American POW and he can show the medal and not tell the story again.
I don’t want to hear the POW while millions of Americans are losing their homes and financially are going under.
Dr. Alterman, on these speeches — “So if someone turns out to be able to give a speech that has been written by other people, that means they might have a decent future as an actor, nothing more…”
I tend to agree.
In this case, low-key and informative was the way to go.
I got the low-key part, especially how “Warshington” has performed.
Informative? Not so much. The only thing of substance I heard were the things he was making up about his opponent.
Remember in previous elections, when the Dems lost, they tried to out-Republican the Republicans? They played the Republican game, let the Republicans set the rules. This time is different. Notice how politicians everywhere are trying to out-Obama Obama? All this talk of change, a shunning of “politics as usual” (which is a quote from Palin, though it is a phrase coined by Obama).
They know that they are losing so they are trying to capitalize on some of Obama’s strengths. They are trying to sound new, bold, progressive and independent. Problem is, no one (I say, NO ONE!)can out-Obama Obama.
Yeah, there’s NEVER been a non-incumbent campaign that pushed “change”! It’s all new to the Democrats and especially Obama. It’s like he’s here to save the world!
Car wreck indeed –
John McCain’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew more television viewers than his rival Barack Obama attracted at the Democratic party’s event last week, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research.
Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCain’s speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obama’s 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen.
Palin has a 58% favorable rating, McCain 57%, Obama 57%, and Biden 48%.
I get it. I’ve seen a lot of American elections and I get how the Republican campaigns work now.
It doesn’t matter how good your candidate actually is. Hell, nothing about your candidate matters at all, their name, their history, their policies (should they bother to state any). If there’s a detail you can use as a backdrop, like “OMG HE WAS A POW”, that’s a bonus. But it doesn’t actually matter.
All that really matters is that the other guy SUCKS. Who cares what kind of a President McCain will make? At least he’s not Obama! That guy SUCKS!

Uh – maybe that Giants-Redskins game and post-game show pulled away some viewers. Just a thought?
“Palin has a 58% favorable rating”
Again, when was the last time an election was won based on who was running for veep?
All this talk of change, a shunning of “politics as usual”
Funny how they won’t say what they’re changing from, or to.

anyone notice mccain’s little eye-roll when he pledged to bring about the electric car??
as a canadian, i would love to see him in power, that way you can become our mexico.
The look in Bambi’s eyes today is like Dolph Lundgren’s in Rocky IV, after Sly Stallone first bloodies Ivan Drago, and the noble, indestructible Russian thinks: O my Gaia, I could lose this thing.
Frankie, I hate to break it to you, but anyone who actually paid money and wasted their time watching a Rocky movie after the 1st is a complete moron.
You’ve really convinced yourself of that, haven’t you? That they’re all just secret McCain supporters.
Yup, and I have no reasons why I should believe your POV.
Come November, I guess we’ll see whether you were right. ‘Cause if you’re wrong… Ouch! It’s gonna sting.
Yup, America is really going to hurt there.
We’re all racists, and would never vote for an almost black candidate, right?
Speak for yourself.
Whether or not McSame said “brown noise”, the whole damn GOP convention was the world’s longest, largest, loudest “brown NOTE.”
I hope the 38 million people that watched McCain’s speech were the same 38 million that watched Obama. I’d like to think our electorate is that discerning.
If it was the same 38 million. it will be Obama in a freaking tsunami, dude!
I hate to break it to you, but anyone who actually paid money and wasted their time watching a Rocky movie after the 1st is a complete moron.
Say a guy named after a manga character …
And, BTW, the name calling is SO relevant !
Glad to see some things never change …
And your inability to recognize sarcasm is at once pathetic and refreshing…
Dude , you are, like, so inept!
Say a guy named after a manga character …
No I’m not. But just for laughs, what manga is “Zython” from?
I AM A VETERAN OF BOTH IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN WARS. I THINK ALL WE CAN DO FOR THIS ELECTION IS TRY TO PICK THE LESSER OF 2 EVILS. UNFORTUNATLY NO MATTER WHICH ONE WINS, WE’RE ELECTING AN EVIL
