Those speeches could have been given in 2004, and if the Democratic ticket were behind in the polls and as afraid to fight as the 2004 party was, maybe it would give a boost to the GOP. But basically the GOP told the party the Reichstag was still burning, but not any normal person would find this latest round of yelling Republicans persuasive.
’)
Now THAT was generic.
Snark is not a presidential characteristic.
Todd Palin was still an AIPer after 9/11
But lying is. And Ms. Palin didn’t flinch when they asked her to do it.
She repeated her baldfaced “I told Congress thanks but no thanks,” lie.
The earmark for the Bridge to Nowhere was struck in Congressional conference committee in 2005. Palin was not governor at the time. Governors do not have a say in conference committee negotiations. She did not “tell Congress” anything of the sort.
She stood in front of the convention and the country and told a big, fat lie.
Memo to Harold Wolfson. STFU and die already:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13129.html
Is the media being sexist? Yes. Is it also being racist? Yes. Does it benefit anyone to make a big fuss over it, except John McCain? No.
Come on!
” Wrote two memoirs, but not a single important piece of legislation…”
killer stuff.
“only one man running for president has actually fOUGHT for your freedom…”
She has a million of them…
Sorry, but that “killer stuff” only plays to folks who are willfully ignorant of reality. Very quickly: Obama on nuclear non-proliferation, ethics reform, Katrina funding, etc.
As for the allusion to McCain’s veteran bio, which deserves all the respect that he’s receiving and more, I’m afraid this is an asset that he’s in danger of overestimating. Just ask Kerry how that went
Some thoughts on the convention:
1) Palin gave a good speech. Too negative for my taste, but her delivery and stage presence were amazing. The few times she made a joke, an authentic joke, was a good insight into Gov. Palin. All the sarcastic, demeaning comments however I think will act as a tunroff to those in the middle.
2) Too negative. A sign of desparation? Guliani, while his speech was good, was ALL negative. Romney, terrible mind you, got so low as to take a subtle swipe at Michelle Obama (thought the families were off limits?). Huckabee, while I can’t stand his views, was a classy, effective speaker.
3) Palin opened herself up to alot more problems. Palin reiterated her stand on her “reform” message and a washington “outsider.” Evidence is mounting to show the opposite; emails just released in the investigation; $27 million in earmarks while mayor; almost $200 million in requested earmarks earlier this year (according to the LA times); taking pride in pipelines that run through canada; and claiming McCain dealt with Georgia (However, the Georgia president called JOE BIDEN NOT john mcmcain.
4) Very little was found out about her that the media has not revealed. That begs the question, how much does she know?…ala “what does the VP do?”
5) Her attitude allows Biden to go after her. It would have been better to sit back and not allow him to have that opportunity. A big mistake.
lipstick on a pig…oh that’s a hocky mom?
That was a RED Meat speech. Very Manly! No wonder Todd’s speechless!
Anyway, I like her looks. McCain did a good one picking her…but it’s risky. She is very popular in Alaska. A friend has a daughter in Alaska who’s military And Democrat. and in her 20s. She’s in Sarah’s camp. Considering what was before her, Sarah couldn’t do bad as Gov.
But I found her arrogant and condescending. I think she might have been better writing her own speech. Being the attack dog might hurt her. She was totally tied to the teleprompter. Anyone can do that. Even me. My father died recently and I had to write and perform the eulogy in two days. Hell, no teleprompter for sure. No one else would do and I was honored. In comparison, Palin, had dozens of smart people prepping her and it would have been hard to fail since she does have a good deal of media experience. She’s also Fresh off the Bush…no sweat! Obama’s been working for how long? I believe his convention speech was one of his weakest. Fortunately, he can take a breather for a few days as the Repugs. blow their steam.
What was annoying about Palin’s speech was the complete lies about Obama’s tax policies…he has said he’d Lower taxes on ‘working people’ but of course raise taxes on the wealthy as that should be done due to the inordinate cuts Bush gave the very wealthy how often live off of investment income only taxed at 15 percent and avoid social security payroll taxes completely…she said he was going to raise everyone’s taxes w/o any proof. And the Bridge to Nowhere BS has been corrected before but she continues to take credit for something she didn’t do.
Let’s admit until now the Republican convention was a boor. Tomorrow, McCain should give a dozy…and it’s been written and rewritten a hundred times by very smart people.
Snark is not a presidential characteristic.
Right. No presidential or vice-presidential nominee has ever gotten snarky during speeches.
Go to sleep Pops.
Obama on nuclear non-proliferation, ethics reform, Katrina funding, etc.
Yeah and Obama is also for puppy dogs and ice cream.
The best part of the night is that that Palin and especially Rudy Giuliani gave people a reason to ask themselves, “You know…what the hell has Barack Obama done?”
It won’t take them long to find out because Rudy was right when he said ZERO.
Already one of the major networks, MSNBC, is bringing up questions about her claim on the bridge to nowhere. Also, Madow brought up the views of her church towards Israel. Oops. It’s been nice getting to know you Govenor
I wish you the best
I should know better than to prod at your desperate attempt at a comeback, but I would just like to point out that you’ve just put nuclear non-proliferation, ethics reform and Katrina funding on a level of importance with puppy dogs and ice cream.
So I guess I do understand how you can try adding with fingers on both hands but get zero, and how Palin amounts to an credible VP pick. Math sure is hard!
I think McCain decided that both his electoral and governing interest was in energizing the far right fundamentalists over trying to reach out to independents.
All they have to do is get enough Republicans to vote while dimming interest in & access to voting among Democrats.
And if McCain does win, he’s got a built in crazy Talibangelical activist community that he falsely thinks will be allied to him. They, on the other hand, will be interested in Sarah Palin’s possession of Dick Cheney’s office so that she can do all the crazy, evil, unaccountable things Cheney did from the VP “Fourth Branch”, with a side order of fundamentalist crazy.
Go to sleep Pops.
Aren’t you the guys supporting the geriatric candidate?
As far as “raising questions” about Sen. Obama. Been there. Done that. Months ago, millions of votes ago.
Truth is, at the outset of this campaign, I was hoping Mr. Obama would sit out a cycle and get a little more seasoning. The stars aligned for him. He woulda been crazy not to take his shot.
Now we’re down to two choices. I still think Mr. Obama could use more seasoning. But the campaign of the last year-and-a-half have convinced me that Mr. Obama has better judgment, better temperament, better understanding of the world, and better vision to serve as President.
Is he an ideal candidate? I don’t think so. He’s better than the alternative.
Bwah!
Roy Edroso:
Duh,
I thought that you were making fun of Palin and then I realized that you’re serious.
“…Rudy was right…”
First time for everything.
Except that Rudy was wrong this evening. But you are right: first time for everything, and I am patient and hopeful for the day
“Right. No presidential or vice-presidential nominee has ever gotten snarky during speeches”.
Yeah, because certain behavior is commonplace, that automatically means then that such behavior is admirable and should be immune from criticism (rolls eyes).
I’ve heard Rudy’s speech before. It was better in the original German.
“She repeated her baldfaced ‘I told Congress thanks but no thanks,’ lie.”
That better be in a campaign ad by the end of the week. It needs to be pressed enough that it comes up in the Vice Presidential debate.
We dont give a damm about the clowns in the DNC

I’ve heard Rudy’s speech before. It was better in the original German.
Ooh, let’s all be clever and call Palin a Nazi without coming out and saying it! And while we’re at it, let’s plagiarize a line from the late Molly Ivins talking about Pat Buchanan!
lipstick on a pig…oh that’s a hocky mom?
Three cheers for ignorant morons.
“What’s the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? Lipstick!”
Oh, and apparently Palin’s teleprompter crapped out on her during the speech, and she had to do it largely from memory. Gee, I wonder how other candidates do when denied a teleprompter?
Oh, yeah… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDJSVPAx8xc
Maybe we should hold one of the debates at 3:00 a.m. and see how they do…

Ooh, let’s all be clever and call Palin a Nazi without coming out and saying it!
Sarah Palin is a Nazi. And so is the Republican party and the modern conservatives who control it and represent a majority of it’s membership. See, it’s not so hard. When the GOP stops acting like the Nazis, we’ll stop calling ‘em that. If the last two nights are any kind of evidence, that day ain’t coming soon.
Courtesy of Greg Saunders:
Sarah Palin, tonight :
“Here’s how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.”
Mystery Men :
Mr. Furious: Okay, am I the only one who finds these sayings just a little bit formulaic? “If you want to push something down, you have to pull it up. If you want to go left, you have to go right.” It’s…
The Sphinx: Your temper is very quick, my friend. But until you learn to master your rage…
Mr. Furious: …your rage will become your master? That’s what you were going to say. Right? Right?
The Sphinx: Not necessarily.
Home run last night.
Sorry Dems, Barack was The One for a long time. There’s a new sheriff in town.
Enjoy having Congress for a while, but it’s going to be John McCain for four years and Sarah Barracuda Pit Bull Hockey Mom for 8 years after that.
Start grooming Chelsea for 2020.
She was good, no doubt, but it was red meat to ravening lions. Insulting the other guy ultimately won’t get many converts.
Let’s face it, if she lifted up her skirt and took a dump on stage cons and the media would be complementing her on how much of a maverick she is and what a fine bouquet she brings to the ticket.
In fact, she’s more of the same. Boring.
I see Sarah’s use of her son going off to war as a Prop for her campaign…even giving his deployment date as “9/11″ as so cynical it’s breathtaking.
The lies about Obama need to be corrected.
Winning the Christian Right isn’t going to win the election. Note, Karl Rove’s worried that Obama’s not only cornered 90 percent of the Black vote…but he’s made huge gains with Hispanics. Awesome. Now, working women are seeing Wonderwoman from Alaska with her 10 trucks, dozen snowmachines, 3 houses and her inability to steer any of her kids to go to college…and saying “that’s not me”. Women are getting turned off faster than men on this ‘babe’.
What continues to gall is the repetition of the Big Lie (note intentional reference to Goebbels), or in this case Lies: that Democrats will (a) “raise your taxes” and (b)”increase the size of government,” when every oh-so-loath-to-contradict pundit knows Bush has already done (b) beyond any modern president, and the Democrats, contrary to (a), are going to lower taxes, not raise them.
This is the shit that keeps getting shoveled between the references to styrofoam and hockey and that dogeared P.O.W. reference. As Orwell could tell you, it’s the lies that go unrebutted that slip through and get real. These are the real killers.
btw, I agree with Oliver. I try to nuanced about it….but it comes down to Fascism: read any definition and add ‘em up. That’s a definition of Nazism or Republicanism. :corporative (fasci=bundled sticks..all for one…but none for one) the symbol of fascism is the roman bundled sticks….one stick(individual) is weak, but a bundle is strong…thus limit individual rights, embrace force over reason, uber patriotism; business rights over worker’s rights; militarism (the ultimate sign of Fascism); crushing of minorities and divergent opinions (Rush Limbaugh’s famous ditum: eliminate liberals but leave a few to show off to show how silly they are…sort of like Nazi’s said about the Jews..) .
Oliver is maybe more busy and thus more concise than I.
Three cheers for ignorant morons..
Pardon us? Shouldnt you be busy over at V-Dare Light? All your commenters combined couldnt make a full set of teeth.
Duh’s quote of Gov. Palin… “only one man running for president has actually fOUGHT for your freedom…”
Datadave… btw, I agree with Oliver. I try to nuanced about it….but it comes down to Fascism: read any definition and add ‘em up.
In fact, and I typically try to avoid this type of hyperbole, I found Gov. Palin’s ‘freedom’ assertion to be startlingly fascistic. I’d be very curious to know how she believes that North Vietnam was threatening the freedom of American citizens. If she wants to go back and read up on the French colonization and occupation of Indochina, I’m not sure she’d make that claim again without willingly being deceitful.
But that’s a minor point.
Anyone know what time the Palin family had to return the prop, I mean, their baby boy, back to the prop room?
BTW – Alaska is the biggest welfare queen of the 50 states.
“The lies about Obama need to be corrected.”
Which ones?
“Anyone know what time the Palin family had to return the prop, I mean, their baby boy, back to the prop room?”
Stay classy Dims!!
You know what worries me the most? The fact that this country has a long track record of not voting in it’s best interests. Voting for the guy “They’d like to have a beer with.” As opposed to the guy who will make our country stronger and better. The logic this time “She sure is purty and she loves guns! WOOOO!”
Think I’m being glib? I’m not. The right is loving this gal more than the left likes Barack. Not because they have any real reason to but when they get behind something they get behind it all the way even if it kills them and everyone around them. Remember that thing your parents said to you as a teenager all the time “If all your friends jumped off a bridge and died would you jump too?” Republicans will jump. They’re jumping. Democrats problem has always been too much bickering amongst themselves. Republicans pick a direction and all get in lockstep and move. Never go off message.
The Democrats have no strategy to counter this. None. The hope and prayer is that maybe reason will win out this time. But you can hope in one and shit in the other…see which one fills up first.
The Dems didn’t see this coming and are in trouble. I am very worried for our country and it’s future.
Obama/Biden ‘08
Ooh, let’s all be clever and call Palin a Nazi without coming out and saying it!
That’s pretty rich, Mr. Tea, coming from someone who was making “Ein volk, ein reich” references just last week.
More sauce Mr. Goose?
“Stay classy Dims!!”
Actually, I’m still a registered Republican – one of those “Republicans for Obama” that the media assures us are just a small handful. My dad is a Republican, and he is voting for Obama, not cause he’s starry-eyed, but Bush has ruined the Republican brand for him.
BTW – anyone notice that Palin never said “Bush” or “Cheney” once in her speech?
>Sarah Palin is a Nazi. And so is the Republican party and the modern conservatives who control it and represent a majority of it’s membership. See, it’s not so hard. When the GOP stops acting like the Nazis, we’ll stop calling ‘em that. If the last two nights are any kind of evidence, that day ain’t coming soon.
Wow. That Sarah Palin, yep, she and the rest of those Republicans show many of the same hallmarks as Nazi’s – forcibly suppressing opposition, dictatorial government and state sanctioned killing of races and/or classes that aren’t the right kind. It’s amazing that you managed to live through the last 8 years with all these Nazi’s around! Your perspective is so warped that you think that Republicans = Nazis is a reasonable comparison. Pathetic, and sad.
Go to sleep pops.
No time. I have to go out and move a couple of pianos.
Real work that accomplishes real goals, is not done in Pakistan, and oh BTW, pays me about $100 an hour. No wonder the GOP hates hard working middle class people like me. We embarrass them.
Ooh, let’s all be clever and call Palin a Nazi without coming out and saying it!
Well, I say pictures are louder than words.
Anyone know what time the Palin family had to return the prop, I mean, their stolen baby boy, back to the prop room?

Haplo, I hear that defense to my attack every time….but let’s think about what you and other conservative Republicans say (the few liberal or moderate Republicans still around I’ll give a pass on this…)
You are saying because I and other Liberals haven’t been suppressed or physically attacked…even though Republicans have the power and guns to do that, then that’s proof Republicans won’t do it in the future even though the Republican spokesman use coded and hateful terms to destroy careers, lives, such as Sarah Palin’s paster saying Democrats will go to hell for opposing Bush. In other words, you are saying we are capable of crushing you bugs (Liberals) but abstain because you (Liberals) aren’t a real threat. But you Republicans continue to demand complete control and refuse to compromise on ProLife, deficit building lowering of taxes while demanding reverence for the Military. Let’s remember when a Democrat, even though a very moderate Southern Democrat became President (Clinton), Republicans did use the verbal (and sometimes the physical) guns: Rush Limbaugh for example…saying after we (rightwingers) destroy the Liberals we’ll leave a few around for show…heard him say that in early 90s), then there was Ruby Ridge, Waco, and then Oklahoma city all where Federal employees were murdered by Rightwing wackos. Then the militia movement and numerous threats on a relatively lightweight compromising Democrat. You see when Democrats or Liberals do obtain some power….to change things….results are like MLK’s death, many violent acts against antiwar activists, Harvey Milk of San Francisco and many other acts of violence by rightwingers.. the Weatherman pale in comparison….specially since they didn’t specifically attack people but Rightwingers have no such compunction……they will kill to defend their special privileges of guns and religion.
(and Republicans love 9/11 as it briefly forced liberals to support the President…even though that same President ignored warnings of terrorism and continues to support the Oil Lobby that helped fund the ‘terrorists’ that attacked us on 9/11/01/__ When liberals began to flee Bush 2’s demands for more and more uncompromising terms like lowering taxes for those who most profit from war and oil, or wanting to use 9/11 to gut the social security funds (and put them in Wall Street where they’d be fee-ed and sapped by questionable ‘big spenders’) we started to see that giving Republicans an inch and they’d take a mile…)
Let’s cut out the Nazi references, people.
>In other words, you are saying we are capable of crushing you bugs (Liberals) but abstain because you (Liberals) aren’t a real threat.
No Dave, I’m saying that Republicans won’t crush you because it’s wrong. The only “threat”, I suppose, that would make people take up arms against Liberals is if Liberals took up arms against them.
>But you Republicans continue to demand complete control and refuse to compromise on ProLife, deficit building lowering of taxes while demanding reverence for the Military.
Yes, complete control. As in the Democrats controlling both branches of Congress. Sounds like complete control to me.
>they will kill to defend their special privileges of guns and religion.
What? guns and religion are special privileges for Republicans only?
Sorry, this is just garbage. You seem to want to conflate criticism of your positions with someone putting a gun to your head and forcing you to do something. There is an ocean of difference between the two. Until that ocean is crossed, you are just spouting “it makes me feel good to nurse this the other side is evil and i am a poor victim” complex. Grow the hell up. I really hope you are just a dumb college kid who will grow up in time. (I can forgive, to an extent, young people who are stupid like this because hey, they are young.)
