Is This Thing On?

The Xcel Center seems deathly empty, especially compared to the Pepsi Center last week. It’s like the Republican party is holding a wake… for itself.

Matt Stoller documents the scene.

MORE: TPM has video of the empty seats.

Or, unlikely the democrats who were laughing at, they were taking seriously the threat to NO from the most recent hurricane and downsized accordingly.

  2. duh says:

And of course, it was a full house in Geneva, Switzerland where George Clooney held a $10K a plate fundraiser for The Obama. Just a bunch of middle class americans, hanging out in the most expensive city in the world, while the Republicans await a hurricane.

The Obama: Change we can believe in…Not.

  3. Actually, we filled an arena and a stadium in Denver. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. It’s the capital of a state in America (the country the Palins hate so much) where Barack Obama is gonna win.

You have it all wrong. Hurricanes are events that the GOP celebrates with birthday cakes and personalized guitars that the president can’t play anyway. It was only three years ago, and you have already forgotten how Bush and McCain celebrated Katrina together?

Hey and Al Gore’s running mate spoke at this “thing” tonight, talk about irony.

“Hey and Al Gore’s running mate spoke at this “thing” tonight, talk about irony.”

You realize Lieberman didn’t help Al Gore to win in 2000, and he is less liked now. Having him speak at the GOP convention is not a selling point.

Repubs couldn’t miss their Walker Texas Ranger reruns

McCain has seven houses. Palin has three.
And you are complaining that the Democrats are out of touch?

“…hanging out in the most expensive city in the world…”

Care to back that up with facts? The report I read had Moscow as number one.

“…while the Republicans await a hurricane.”

SSSssss. That’s hurricanes as there are three of them: Gustav, Hanna, and Ike (which is still forming). Gee, offshore drilling seems like such a good idea, if you are an oilman.

And what has McCain done to help the region that was hit? What has he actually done?

I do notice how Old the Geezers are at the Republican Convention.

NOW that’s an Ageist comment on my part. I admit. I am almost 60 myself and I’d feel young if I was there.

Well, as much as I hope for HOPE, this election is still up in the air. I never doubt the Democrat’s ability to snatch defeat from certain victory.

another viewpoint is from the famous, (or infamous) “Spengler”: http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/JI03Aa02.html

I don’t want to rain on your parade, Oliver. I fear Spengler might win that bet. The points are that Obama has been playing it safe for the remainder of the election cycle and McCain’s taking risks. That is a recipe I remember Dukakis did in ‘88. Bush 1 told him not to play the Class Warfare card and Dukakis like a pansy listened to Bush…and lost a double digit lead in two months. Obama: it’s the Economy, not Sarah Palin. I think he gets it…but he’s got to step up more!!

Please push Obama to move out of his comfort zone and the Economy is the only stick he has against McCain/Bush/Lieberman/Palin. But then who can talk to Obama other than Michelle? Palin is a side note and the sexism charge could be pushed against Obama et al with some truth…..as is the ageism I exhibited above.

But Republicans are really losing market share with the youth vote. And if the economy keeps getting more inequal it’s only a matter of time until democratic socialism becomes an honorable solution to the Third Worldization of America.

  10. datadave says:

Palin also has like how many vehicles in the last 10 years: among which ford f-350’s, f-250s, large Suvs’…over 20 according to a web investigation. ?

Really Energy Hogs aren’t they? Models for America.

Note the oil prices are going down just in time for the election just like in ‘06…

And just like in EVERY year after the summer months come to a close! Isn’t that weird?

  12. datadave says:

Oliver, you can delete that Spengler quote….going back and reading his crap about calling Obama’s mom a “fellow traveler” (a Communist)..yeah, sure from Kansas? A lot of people think he’s David P. Goldman a former LaRouchette. ’nuff said, but still fun to read.

Naw. The extremes of ‘06 and ‘08 are political.

  13. duh says:

    Mea maxima culpa….

Geneva is only the SECOND most expensive city in the world….my argument is crushed, clearly regular americans hang out there all the time….

    dumbass

  14. Enlightened Liberal says:

Clearly George Clooney shouldn’t have been in Switzerland hosting a fundraiser, given his responsibility as the head of FEMA and all…

Dr P, why are you trying to engage in class warfare?

  15. juhar says:

I tried. I couldn’t watch the RNC. I keep coming back though and I thought when Fred Thompson came out it would be better because he can at least act. Thompson couldn’t act like he was alive. I’ll be back tonight trying to get through it.

  16. Repack Rider says:

I gess they didn’t want to upstage the DNC’s over the top, energy filled, mega-spectacle production with thousands of cheering extras.

First night, W LITERALLY phones it in to a lot of empty seats. We get Lieberman and Fred Thompson, two bundles of energy and charisma for the geriatric set.

They don’t want to hit us with the REALLY old guy without a lead-up that blunts the contrast between his age and confusion and Obama’s youth and vitality, so they start with guys JUST A LITTLE LESS OLD but just as uncharismatic.

I’m 62, and they would make me eat at the kids’ table at that convention.

  17. Repack Rider says:

    “Guess” O-Dub, get preview.

  18. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“Geneva is only the SECOND most expensive city in the world….my argument is crushed, clearly regular americans hang out there all the time….”

    Two points…

1.) Really? I had it as seventh in 2007, and the story I read didn’t have it in the top ten in 2008. And still no evidence provided by you to back up your claim.

2.) You ignored the rest of my points, so yes, your argument was crushed.

  19. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“And just like in EVERY year after the summer months come to a close! Isn’t that weird?”

I just checked the 3-year graph, and it didn’t really happy last year. Sure, there was a small dip, but nothing like this and it was gone by September.

  20. Enlightened Liberal says:

Fred Thompson looked like a corpse. Which may have served to make McSame look virile by comparison.
