Sarah Palin, Ted Stevens, & The Republican Culture Of Corruption

More of the same

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state’s political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

Palin’s name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the “Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.,” a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

Palin’s relationship with Alaska’s senior senator may be one of the more complicated aspects of her new position as Sen. John McCain’s running mate; Stevens was indicted in July 2008 on seven counts of corruption.

Ok, so sitting on committee with someone distasteful is now an evidence of corruption?

We all agree this is grist for the mill, right?

    Think carefully now…..

    Okeedokey.

The Obama worked for a domestic terrorist name Ayers…..run with it.
It is a culture of terrorists that Democrat Party….

  2. Gravatar Icon 2 Oliver Willis

She didn’t just sit on the committee. She supported the bridge to nowhere, she enlisted Stevens to run campaign ads for her. She’s part of the culture of corruption.

  3. Gravatar Icon 3 DeanBurkhalter

Palin’s “family values” goose is cooked now. We can see how that worked for her as a parent with her pregnant daughter. Give me a break. This woman is a total fraud - and in all respects. By the end of the week with all that’s coming out, she will be toast.

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 Jay Tea

Oddly enough, Oliver, you don’t mention that she later changed her stance on the “bridge to nowhere” and helped kill it, nor that she endorsed and campaigned for Stevens’ rival in the Republican primary…

I guess those truths are inconvenient to your agenda, though.

Well as we find out more about the Annenberg Challenge (assuming they release the documents) I won’t expect to hear a friggin peep out of you as the full complicity of The Obama with the domestic terrorist Ayers comes into full light, right?

And the fact that Ayers, a domestic terrorist, hired and then worked closely with obama should be widely known and criticized.

Cause at the end of the day, Palin fought Stevens and the bridge to nowwhere, and Obama has just lied about his association with Ayers, he wasn’t just “a guy who lives in my neighborhoo”.

I welcome this sudden change of liberal hearts and their interest in opening up this particular can of worms.

  6. Gravatar Icon 6 Jay

She supported the bridge to nowhere,

And then killed it when she got elected. One of the few times a politician reversed course in that kind of way. Contrast that with Obama who rails about “corporate giveaways for oil companies” yet he signed on to the 2005 bill that provided such giveaways. Compare and contrast dude.

she enlisted Stevens to run campaign ads for her.

    And?

She’s part of the culture of corruption.

And you’re coming off as desperate as an 18 year old Navy kid whose been out to sea for 6 months.

  7. Gravatar Icon 7 Parthenon

And the fact that Ayers, a domestic terrorist, hired and then worked closely with obama should be widely known and criticized.

I’m getting this funny feeling that should those documents be released, conservatives will shout “AHA!” every time Ayers’ name appears within ten pages of Sen. Obama’s.

In any case, the Senator hasn’t lied about anything that anybody knows of. All of this stuff - along with all the predictions of ‘McCain’s going down in flames’ and “Obama’s going down in flames’ - are all just attempts to gain an edge beyond the stuff that actually matters.

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 Parthenon

But as to the actual thread topic, even if this stuff is all thunder and no lightning, this was the risk that Sen. McCain knowingly took. He can’t channel his ‘trust-buster’ hero and have an anchor of corruption whispers about his sidekick at the same time.

It is almost equally odd, Jay, that you fail to mention that, while she helped kill the bridge to nowhere, she did keep the earmark money that was appropriated for it.

I guess that truth is slightly inconvenient for your agenda, though.

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 Oliver Willis

So she was for the bridge, you’ll concede. Because you might want to tell the McCain team, who said she was against it.

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 Jay

Sure Oliver. And George H.W. Bush didn’t raise taxes after he was elected in 1988.

    Pretzel, meet logic.

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 Jay Tea

She’s STILL got a hell of a way before she reaches Obama’s level of double-standards, who simultaneously supported the DC gun ban AND the Supreme Court ruling that declared it unconstitutional.

Here’s a Constitutional Law professor who cheerfully supports a law that he agrees was unconstitutional…

Not that you’re implying he’s a radical or anything, right Mr. Duh?

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 Quaker in a Basement

Oh wait. Where’s my program? Mr. Duh is #32 on the conservative team. Dave in SoCal is #23.

So I’ll pose the same question to you, Mr. Duh, that I posed to Dave in SoCal: Who else was on the board of CAC?

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 DeanBurkhalter

If John McSame or George Bush’s lips are moving, they’re lying. ‘nuf said.

The era of corruption in the white house will be over when Obama and Biden govern. If anyone wants to spar about Obama’s past, all I have to say is “bring on the Keating Five!”. We all know that Cindy’s business partner is Charles Keating.

The sad thing, as John Kerry so eloquently stated about McCain is that he needs to have a conversation with himself, then an Alzheimer’s test before anyone is going to buy his line of bull and flipflops. Hell, that man can’t tell you what he ate for breakfast this morning - and listens to his Rice Krispies for advice: Snap, Crackle and Pop…..or more aptly now: Trix, Trek, Willow, and the rest of the witch names Palin has used on her poor kids.

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 Zython

Heaven forbid someone be able to see both sides of the argument. Heaven for-fucking-bid!

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 Nimrod Gently

Of course she changed her stance on the bridge, it was politically expedient to do so. Everyone except maybe Stevens himself condemned the bridge once it was painfully obvious that it was a bad idea. Doesn’t prove anything.

“Sarah believes in God. She could never be corrupt”-conservatives

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 DeanBurkhalter

So if any of you want to dig up old “skeletons”, we can begin at the beguine for McPappy - and his whoring days with Cindy while still married to his first wife (Nancy Reagan still doesn’t speak to him to this day for that) and deserting his children….call that “family values”? Or maybe we should dig into his military record where the USS Forestal disaster comes readily to mind….where his lack of judgment resulted in the death of 132 of his crew?? Or the fact that he recklessly crashed five planes? Or his Anapolis Record and his violation of the military code of conduct 4 times? Then again, if we’re bored, we can always revisit the McKeating Five Scandal and his part in it all.

People are asking for an Alzheimer’s test for him which is warranted now that he’s dissed every Republican in congress, this administration, and presidential contenders and selected the “one he believes to be most qualified” for the spot. Imagine Kim Jung Il discussing nuclear proliferation with Palin while John McCain is having chemotherapy for his melanoma?

What’s up with his melanoma anyway? For Type 2A Invasive Melanoma (for which there is no cure), the numbers are 65%/10 years. This was the dx in 2000 so I’d say he’s on borrowed time. Never before in modern times has the selection of the one a “heartbeat away from the Presidency” become more critical. Never before does experience and intelligence count as much as now. Clearly, Palin’s resume is about as thin as it can get. Add to that her current ethics (abuse of power) investigation, her lack of “family values” in her 17 year old minor daughter becoming impregnated, and her involvement with the indicted Senator (for whom she ran his PAC) Ted Stevens.

Like the Huffington Post just reported, the “skinny” on little Sarah from podunkville is drip, drip, dripping out. Before long, she’ll be taken under by a tsunami with photos from her wild pageant days…..if anyone has skeletons that make her look like McHooker personified, it’s this ditz from NoWhere.

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 duh

I have no idea. And I guess I won’t considering that the archives have been locked away.

One of the most interesting things though, is that in the report “The Chicago Annenberg Challenge: The First Three Years” Barack Obama is not even mentioned…not once.

So here is the report trying to justify the CAC, supposedly one of The Obama’s crowning leadership achievements, and they don’t even MENTION him in report that is supposed to be crowing over it’s own success!

    Fascinating, just fascinating

    Here, read it yourself….

“Oddly enough, Oliver, you don’t mention that she later changed her stance on the “bridge to nowhere” and helped kill it …”

Helped kill it? You’re kidding. She had no choice but to “kill it” because the Federal government was going to be paying for it! She fully supported the bridge right up until she realized that Alaska was going to have to foot the bill itself.

Palin had no inherent opposition to the bridge because of her staunch principles of fiscal discipline. Fuck no. She was totally ready to spend the money right up until the money failed to come through.

Of course, in classic fashion, Alaska got some of the money for the bridge anyway and decided to keep it:

The state, however, never gave back any of the money that was originally earmarked for the Gravina Island bridge, said Weinstein and Elerding.

In fact, the Palin administration has spent “tens of millions of dollars” in federal funds to start building a road on Gravina Island that is supposed to link up to the yet-to-be-built bridge, Weinstein said.

“She said ‘thanks but no thanks,’ but they kept the money,” said Elerding about her applause line.

    Yeah, Palin. Champion of Pork!

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 DeanBurkhalter

The real story on how she lobbied Congress FOR the infamous Bridge To Nowhere is going to relabel McCain’s tired flagging campaign with the moniker”The Campaign to Nowhere”. It’s all public record and the data is there for everyone to see. It’s no he said/she said. It’s factual data and taped testimony, folks. In court, this would be dubbed prima facie evidence. There is absolutely NO confusion about what this missy did or did not do. And, when her complicity in Ted Stevens corruption case becomes evident, that little gal is going to have a lot of ’splainin’ to do. After all, she ran his 527. Sit back, pop the popcorn, bet on the next witch’s name for the shotgun birth, and watch as Pandora’s snakes reveal themselves. So much for McInsane’s “vetting process”. He has trivialized the entire political process by his selection - AND has damaged the reputations of the rising stars in his own party (Guiliani, Huckabee, etc.) because according to him, they’re simply “not worthy”. I guess since it’s also token female charades, that goes for any Republican female member of congress, too. I’ve always suspected McCain to be a “turncoat” who would find a way to get even with Bush who castrated him in the presidential primaries of 2000 - I think he’s now giving the GOP the middle finger. What a maverick (madman)! What a delusional old bag who thinks that an ex-almost beauty queen will inflate his reputation. This also proves the mysogenistic persona of John McCain - using women once again, as he always has and always will. I’m wondering when Cindy will have had enough of it? He’s made a total jackass out of her, too.

Zython, I have the greatest of respect for those who see both sides of an argument. I try to do that myself. I even, occasionally, succeed.

What I don’t do is say I SUPPORT both sides of an argument, especially when it’s clear that the two are utterly contradictory.

Obama didn’t say he UNDERSTOOD the DC gun ban, he said he SUPPORTED it.

Obama didn’t say he UNDERSTOOD the Court’s ruling it unconstitutional, he said he SUPPORTED it.

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 Bruce Henry

I don’t have the quotes, but I’m pretty sure Obama said he supported the DC gun ban, but also recognized that what the Supreme Court says, goes. Feel free to correct me.

    November 20, 2007:

In a story entitled, “Court to Hear Gun Case,” the Chicago Tribune’s James Oliphant and Michael J. Higgins wrote “. . . the campaign of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said that he ‘…believes that we can recognize and respect the rights of law-abiding gun owners and the right of local communities to enact common sense laws to combat violence and save lives. Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional.’”

    Obama, on the Heller ruling:

“I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures. The Supreme Court has now endorsed that view, and while it ruled that the D.C. gun ban went too far, Justice Scalia himself acknowledged that this right is not absolute and subject to reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe. Today’s ruling, the first clear statement on this issue in 127 years, will provide much-needed guidance to local jurisdictions across the country.

As President, I will uphold the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun-owners, hunters, and sportsmen. I know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. We can work together to enact common-sense laws, like closing the gun show loophole and improving our background check system, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals. Today’s decision reinforces that if we act responsibly, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe.”

Oh, yeah, the first statement was “inartful” and the fault of an unnamed staffer. How many times has that happened to Obama now? What happened to his vaunted “judgment” when it comes to hiring staffers who can get his positions right?

Forgive me, Jay, I’m “dumb” and I “should be lobotomized”, but I’m pretty sure those long quotes you so quotefully quoted said what I said.
In the first instance, that the DC gun ban was a good idea.
In the second, that the Supreme Court didn’t agree, but did agree that there were some circumstances in which local governments could enact restrictions. And that what the Supreme Court says, goes. And that that was a good thing.
Way to shoot me down, dude. Damn, you’re good. Ouch.

it’s utterly ridiculous that she and mccain are spouting all this “we’re gonna clean things up” nonsense when they’re both old time corrupt players.
mccain’ll take money from just about anybody and do favors for them and palin got a load of support from ted stevens. let’s not even get into the embarrassing business of her trying to get her former brother-in-law fired and the pending investigation into whether she broke the law in attempting to do so.
typical republican responses always follow reveals of this stuff though. sorry, i don’t buy the “they all suck” argument here. obama and biden may not be perfect but they look awful damn good compared to mccain and palin.

Palin has no problem spending money as long as it’s other peoples money or serves or her political purposes.

Palin supported the bridge to no where till the federal government said no to bridge. “She had supported the bridge and the earmark for it secured by Alaska’s Congressional delegation during her run for governor.” “She said ‘thanks but no thanks,’ but they kept the money,” Reuters

“the Palin administration had requested $6.6 million in federal earmarks for water and sewer improvements for Wasilla, and another $1 million for police equipment. Mayor Palin reviewed and signed the lobbyist’s report, dated April 5, 2000.” - MSN ABC

However she turned down a “2% sales tax to pay for road, sewer and water upgrades. These investments laid the way for the city’s growth” Washington Post 9/14/08

She forced the Wasilla library to remove what in her judgement were controversial books. Washington Post 9/14/08

As Govenor and Mayor - She slashed money for road improvements, emergency services. This is reform?

She also didn’t veto a controversial $2 million for an “academic based” conference meant to highlight arguments that global warming isn’t threatening the survival of polar bears. Anchorage daily news. She spent $2MM on this!?

In Palin’s home area, the Mat-Su, Borough Manager John Duffy said money for major road projects stayed intact. Anchorage daily news.

“Palin cut $268 million worth of projects which were democratically approved by the State Legislature, but supported plans to give away $781 million to her constituants. Yes, Palin knows how to use the Veto pen. She also knows how to buy votes.” Anchorage Democratic Rep. Harry Crawford said he was disappointed in Palin’s new plan. He said it lacks enough emphasis on providing long-term, affordable, renewable energy for Alaskans such as hydroelectric, geothermal and wind power. http://www.adn.com/legislature/v-printer/story/442702.html

Qualified to be President? She was mayor of a town of 5,500 the size of many large high schools. She was govenor of the most parsely populated states in the Union.
