The Palin Precedent

10:18 pm EST August 31st, 2008 | Republicans | 33 Comments

So, considering the criteria that the Republicans are using to make up national security credentials for Sarah Palin… I qualify as an astronaut. According to them, Palin has dealt with the Russians because Alaska is near Canada. That said, I qualify as an astronaut because I watched the movie Spacecamp several times.

I totally agree with you and like your spirit, but I think your continuous coverage of this person is playing to the game they are expecting us to play. They picked her so people would get excited/upset and treat her like a celebrity. Probably the best thing we can do is ignore her and talk about real issues and why Obama-Biden is clearly the best choice for our nation! Great blog! Keep it up!

    Mmmm. Moose burgers.

  3. Ursula says:

LOL! Then I want to qualify as being a nuclear physicist! Great point! This campaign has officially reach cartoon status!

  4. jerry says:

This is a terrible argument, because if I thought voting for Palin could qualify me as an astronaut, hello President McCain!

  5. somejackass says:

Dude, spacecamp was an awesome movie! It was one of the first VHS tapes I had, and I’ve probably seen it 50 times. “Max can’t live that long!!” Rock on.

Oooh, sorry my orignal caption was Dukakis Two, Electric Bugaloo

  8. C.S.Strowbridge says:

On a side note, I think Sarah Palin has already backfired on McCain, because I have heard her described ‘a heartbeat away from the Presidency’ so many times it is unbelievable. It has emphasized how old he is incredible.

  9. dennis says:

If Barack Obama had as much experience as Sarah Palin, no one would have a problem with him in the VP slot either. Even if he had the same experience, he’d still make an Ok VP selection.

Liberal bloggers have the drive and the energy, but few possess more than two politically savvy brain cells. Pushing the experience issue with Palin is a loser because it only highlights Obama’s lack of it at the top of the ticket. Voters get this. And voters who count and make a difference are starting to get Palin.

Like with W, misunderestimate her at your own peril. And please do keep talking about her. Preferably with pictures.

  10. duh says:

    Backfired?

shows McCain/Palin at 47%, compared to 45% support for Obama/Biden.

And this with the Obama “bounce”

Can’t wait to backfire our way to the white house!

  11. Enlightened Liberal says:

Take your medicine matt and duh. It’s good for you.

  12. Duros Hussein 62 says:

The online survey was conducted Aug. 29-30, 2008, and included 2,020 likely voters nationwide and carries a margin of error of /- 2.2 percentage points.

Zogby says they’re tied among a handful of Wal-Mart shoppers. Yeah, I’m worried, dude.

  13. calling all toasters says:

If Barack Obama had as much experience as Sarah Palin

Wthe two parties have different ideas of what constitutes “experience.” For instance, while Obama has vastly more experience in and knowledge of national issues, Palin has more experience in lying and abusing power. So, for serving in a Republican administration she has more experience, while for serving in a Democratic administration he does.

  14. duh says:

“Wal-Mart” shopper’s votes count exactly as much as a Kos-Kids vote, you should consider that.

What should have you absolutely terrified is that historically a generic democrat should have a 15 point lead over a generic republican at this stage of the game….and we haven’t seen our convention “bounce” yet.

    Be afraid. Be very afraid.

  15. duh:
Considering the circumstances, do you really think the Republicans are going to get a convention bounce?

  16. Bruce Henry says:

duh, why should a Democrat have such a huge lead at this stage of the game? Is it because it’s obvious, even to you, that the last eight years of Republican misrule have driven this country into the ditch? Then why ask for four more?

  17. Duros Hussein 62 says:

My point was the poll was conducted with 2,000 people. Most of whom classify themsleves as “values voters” (i.e., Republicans, don’t ask me why). Not exactly what would be called an accurate cross-section of the country.

  18. anotherbozo says:

I wait in vain for the MSM to do their jobs. When McCain says (with a straight face) “she has executive experience, she’s been governor of a state,” interviewers should point out that Alaska has a smaller population than Fort Worth, TX. The chatter here wouldn’t be necessary if the media that Mr. and Mrs. Walmart watch (if they watch at all) were on the case…

  19. anotherbozo says:

Robert Reich has a nice way with words:

Sarah Palin has been a governor of state inhabited by more moose than people for twenty months, and before that mayor of a town with a population smaller than two blocks of downtown Manhattan. Although she has barely exercised power, she is already under federal investigation for abuse of it. And while Ms. Palin is perfectly entitled to believe that evolution is a myth, that women should be barred from choosing to have abortions, and that global warming has yet to be proven, these views all run counter to the views of mainstream America.

  20. Frank DiSalle says:

    Yuk, yuk!

    “I live near _____________ ” , so I am an expert at ___________”

How about “I know nothing about other countries, because I have never been to any”

“I know nothing about being poor, because I never was”

“I know nothing about being black in America, because my father is African, and I was born in Hawaii, and raised in Indonesia”

“I know nothing about evictions, repossessions, having my lights turned off, running out of food money and food stamps before the end of the month — I’ve never been hungry”

“I know nothing about the military — I was never in the military”

Still wanna have an “experience” contest?

Let’s see the “Tale of the Tape” for all 4 candidates, and see what we get …

    And , oh, yes!

Quickly : Who succeeded William Henry Harrison?

  21. duh says:

Oh and Oliver, your lede is prescient.

$47mil collected by the mccain campaign this month, $10mill after naming Palin….

    Truly a Palin Precedent.

    heh.

  22. duh says:

“smaller than two blocks of downtown Manhattan. “,who’s “views all run counter to the views of mainstream America.”

There little Reich-Man….fixed it for ya…..

  23. Repack Rider says:

McCain cites as an example of her political experience Palin’s experience as a member of the Wasilla PTA. Apparently very few here have been to a PTA meeting in Alaska, where pretty nearly everyone shows up armed.

    Insert joke here.

    And here.

    And here.

I had to go through Wasilla on my way to Knik and Sqwentna when I followed part of the 1988 Iditarod. I guess it grew a little since then.

  24. juhar says:

Palin has united the splintered Republican Party in a way no one thought was possible. She’s their darling. I don’t think Republicans will be able to keep her as “fresh” as they would like even with less than 70 days before the election.

  25. And yet, McCain will still lag Obama in fundraising.

  26. duh says:

Obama has used up his bank. McCain is just starting to access his.

    Just ramping up….

  27. Parthenon says:

As of the end of July, the disparity was still considerably over 200 million. If you gents think she’s gonna raise you a Thurston Howell III, good luck I guess…

  28. Actually McCain has to use up everything around the time he accepts the nomination since he’s taking public financing.

  29. SaveFarris says:

I don’t think it’s fair to say that Obama has “used up his bank”, though is spending a whole lot for not much effect. And though Palin may be a fundraising boon, they can only raise and spend money until Thursday, at which point they become bound by federal restrictions that come along with accepting matching funds.

Still, in order to match McCain’s total, Obama will have to spend at least some time fundraising in September & October while McCain/Palin will be campaigning full time. And this summer, despite cash advantages, McCain has narrowed the gap.

  30. bobh says:

cool. we have concern trolls, oliver.

Hey, I live in Texas and have lived in Florida, i’m qualified to be an astronaut too, the ships are nearby.

Palin is a disaster for the GOP.
