Picking Palin? More Of The Same

1:49 pm EST August 29th, 2008 | News | 90 Comments

Really?

So, even with the MSM obsessing over the made up Obama-Clinton division in the Democratic party (anybody notice that not a single voice was out of sync in the past week, no matter how hard the MSM tried to squeeze blood from stone), John McCain still has a significant gap when it comes to women voters.

So he picks Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin, currently under investigation, who said she doesn’t know what a vice president does, a creationist and an anti-choice hardliner. They keep trying to make these silly call-outs to Clinton voters, but can anyone seriously put Sen. Clinton’s stature next to Palin’s with a straight face? Plus, the Republican party spent 16 years putting down Sen. Clinton, now they care about her place in history? Please.

Even worse, the whole selling point on the Obama/Biden ticket is that Sen. Obama has the judgement to be president and commander-in-chief while Biden has the experience and breadth of knowledge to back him up. McCain doesn’t have the temperament or judgement, even with a quarter century in Washington, while Palin’s claim to fame seems to be Alaskan corruption and winning a beauty pageant.

who said she doesn’t know what a vice president does

This is another blatant Oliver lie. The full quote makes it clear that she wanted to know what her specific responsibilities would be so that she could decide if she’d do more than provide ceremonial duties. Each VP has different expectations according to the whims of the President.

Just another example of what a liar Oliver is.

FOR PRESIDENT of the USA – On the wars, the economy and America’s future – Obama beats McCain EASILY.

FOR VICE-PRESIDENT of the USA – On the wars, the economy and America’s future – Biden beats Palin EASILY.

For BOTH President and V-President the Democratic ticket is the best way forward for America – NO QUESTION!

That’s our argument – simple and straightforward.

    KISS!

    McCain/Gimmick ’08!

I don’t think she even won that pageant. She was just a runner up. The same thing this ticket will be. A second place showing.

  6. John says:

Governor Palin is currently under investigation by an independent investigator hired by the legislature to determine if she abused her power when firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. On July 11, 2008, Palin dismissed Walter Monegan as Commissioner of Public Safety and instead offered him a position as executive director of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which he subsequently turned down. The Commisioner serves at the will of the governor, so her right to fire him is not in dispute; but Monegan alleged shortly after his dismissal that it may have been partly due to his reluctance to fire an Alaska State Trooper, Mike Wooten, who had been involved in a divorce and child custody battle with Palin’s sister, Molly McCann. In 2006, before Palin was governor, Wooten was briefly suspended for ten days for threatening to kill McCann’s (and Palin’s) father, tasering his 11-year-old stepson (at the stepson’s request), and violating game laws. After a union protest, the suspension was reduced to five days.

Palin replaced Monegan with Chuck Kopp, who had previously been removed from supervision of an employee he had allegedly sexually harassed. Palin knew of Kopp’s alleged sexual harassment before she appointed Kopp.

Palin asserted that her dismissal of Monegan was unrelated to the fact that he had not fired Wooten, and asserts that Monegan was instead dismissed for not adequately filling state trooper vacancies, and because he “did not turn out to be a team player on budgeting issues.” Palin acknowledged that a member of her administration, Frank Bailey, did contact the Department of Public Safety regarding Wooten, but both Palin and Bailey say that happened without her knowledge and was unrelated to her dismissal of Monegan. Bailey was put on leave for two months for acting outside the scope of his authority as the Director of Boards and Commissions. Commissioner Monegan received no severance pay, though at the same time another dismissed Commissioner, Charles Kopp (who served only 11 days) received $10,000.

In response to Palin’s statement that she had nothing to hide, in August 2008 the Alaska Legislature hired Steve Branchflower to investigate Palin and her staff for possible abuse of power surrounding the dismissal. The investigation is being overseen by Democratic State Senator Hollis French, who says that the Palin administration has been cooperating and thus subpoenas are unnecessary. The Palin administration itself was the first to release an audiotape of Bailey making inquiries about the status of the Wooten investigation.

  11. jerry says:

To be honest, I don’t think ANYONE knows what VP does. Apart from visiting the Senate every now and then to break ties, most of what people think of the VP does is to attend funerals.

Apart from being president of the senate, and presiding over the certification of the electoral college, there is no other constitutional role for the VP. So that part of her answer wasn’t wrong, and it’s silly for people to call her on it for that.

They keep trying to make these silly call-outs to Clinton voters, but can anyone seriously put Sen. Clinton’s stature next to Palin’s with a straight face?

I don’t think it matters what serious people will do. NPR interviewed a Colorado milf and bartender and singer and her words were along the lines of “she would have preferred Clinton but this makes McCain her preferred candidate.” I think she was crazy, and I think she has odd notions of who McCain will be fighting to help should he be elected, but most people don’t fret about this stuff as we might. They’ll project what they want and Palin gives them the opportunity to vote McCain while believing they are helping women and helping “the little guy.”

The investigation against Palin is very relevant. What she thinks a VP does was not.

  12. I can’t believe he actually did it.

Greatest day of the entire campaign season. Even the National Review can’t get behind this one.

Everytime The Obama says he is for “Hope and Change”, we point out that his staff is full of old time Chicago Pols, and his VEEP is one of the most senior congressional insiders, and also one of the most liberal. Our VEEP has never had a washington job, and brings a truly unique experience.

Everytime says that The Obama is historic, we point to the first female VP

VP? If you already have her elected, then you won’t have to be concerned about Mr. Obama. But if you’re talking about pointing to the first female VP candidate, you’ll be pointing to Ms. Ferraro.

  24. Randy Brown says:

    Good morning, President Obama!!

As was said elsewhere, the selection of Palin was the equivalent of a Hail Mary pass. Unfortunately for McCain, it’s the Patriots’ Hail Mary pass from this year’s Super Bowl.

By picking a pro-life Jesus freak, McCain may have pushed most of those undecided women firmly into the “D” column. And those bitter PUMAs will now have nowhere to go.

McCain has managed to cast a JK Rowling “Killing Curse” on his own old, jive, moldy, ancient, decrepit mother—-ing ass. Game over.

President Barack Obama. As Ric Flair would say: You better learn to love it, ’cause he’s the best thing going today.

  26. fafaroo says:

“So is this going to be one of the Obama campaign’s new slogans? ‘Obama/Biden – Ready In Case Obama Dies!’”

Good to see that rather than deal with McCain’s woeful choice for VP they’ve decided to just turn off their brains until Nov 5.

  27. Jay says:

Good to see that rather than deal with McCain’s woeful choice for VP

Actually, it was a terrific choice. What’s truly laughable about the criticism is that it’s limited to her “inexperience.” Of course, she’s not running for President. The most inexperienced person in both campaigns is running for President on the Democratic ticket.

  28. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Shorter Jay: We are so fucked.

  29. Quaker in a Basement says:

What’s truly laughable about the criticism is that it’s limited to her “inexperience.”

Oh not at all. There’s lots more.

There’s also criticism of her anti-choice stance on abortion, her anti-science creationism, her eagerness to drill in ANWR, her troubles with an ongoing investigation, and her previous support of fringe lunatic conservatives like Pat Buchanan.

Other than that, though, awesome choice.

  30. Jay says:

Duros, the very fact that the left is going over the top in saying how horrible a choice it was, pleases me. Do you really think Pawlenty or Mitt Romney would have been the better choice?

Does anybody have any reasons beyond “experience” that this is bad choice? I mean, if people have reasons why it is “woeful” and “terrible” and “desperate” then tell me why.

If it was such a horrible choice, it shouldn’t be that difficult to show why.

  31. KXB says:

“The most inexperienced person in both campaigns is running for President on the Democratic ticket.”

The guy who won the most votes is on the Dem ticket – that’s usually how elections work. During the primaries, more people voted for Obama than McCain, Huckabee, and Romney – combined.

  32. Quaker in a Basement says:

Shoot. I forgot “global warming denier.”

  33. I actually don’t think Palin is a horrible choice. A horrible choice would have been Romney. I don’t necessarily think she’s a good choice either. What does she bring McCain? The women she will appeal to are women who were already going to vote Republican. She’s not going to peel off traditionally Democratic women and their independent counterparts. She’s a woman, but she’s conservative and anti-choice. This is the same trick they tried in Maryland (and in other places) with people like Michael Steele – you can dress up a con ideologue in minority/female clothes, but the voters know better.

  34. As far as the “ready in case the candidate dies”. That is, in fact, one of the criteria I think people use to judge vice presidential candidates. If either candidate were to expire I think that’s a comparison that puts Joe Biden far ahead of Sarah Palin.

  35. duh says:

Based on life insurance actuarial tables McCain should live to be about 86 or 87. Tack onto to that the fact that his mother is spry in her mid 90′s, I wouldn’t worry about him dying too much. In fact, you lefties seem to think The Obama is at much higher risk from a whacko….

The other arguments are silly, I mean most of the country thinks we should drill in ANWR, and most of the country is against abortion.

It looks to me like the Democrat party is going to screw ups another “sure thing…”, in spite of “Planet Awesome”….

  36. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“Duros, the very fact that the left is going over the top in saying how horrible a choice it was, pleases me. Do you really think Pawlenty… would have been the better choice?”

    Yes.

Palin is under investigation for corruption charges. Also, she makes McCain look even older than he is. (Joke you will hear on late night TV: “She’s not his V.P. choice, she’s his daughter.” Possibly with the addition: “If you are old enough to remember that joke, you must be McCain.”) Palin is under investigation for corruption charges. She’s got less experience than Obama. Palin is under investigation for corruption charges. She’s anti-choice, so she won’t be able to pull independent women. Palin is under investigation for corruption charges. She’s completely unknown nationwide and will be easy to paint by the Democrats as the see fit. Palin is under investigation for corruption charges.

“If it was such a horrible choice, it shouldn’t be that difficult to show why.”

    Satisfied?

The first job of the V.P. pick is ‘Do no harm.’ Palin harms McCain’s campaign by bringing up abuse of power, which is not something the GOPers want to talk about.

Pawlenty was the best choice for McCain, both in terms of ability and in terms of winning this election. He was a safe pick, who likely would have helped his campaign. Not a lot, granted, but at least he would not have hurt it like practically any other choice.

(By the way, if he decided he must pick a woman to go after the tiny PUMA vote, he should have picked KBH or the ex-CEO of e-bay (can’t remember her name at the moment). But KBH was by far the best choice if he wanted a women as his V.P. choice.)

  37. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Does anybody have any reasons beyond “experience” that this is bad choice? I mean, if people have reasons why it is “woeful” and “terrible” and “desperate” then tell me why.

    From Crooks & Liars

    # Palin is the least qualified and experienced running mate in the history of the office, having served a total of 20 months in office, and none on the national level.
    # Does anyone really want Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the Presidency should McCain become unable to serve?
    # Although known as a reformer, Palin is a product of the corrupt Alaskan political machine, and is even under criminal investigation herself for abusing the power of her office.
    # Can she possibly face off against Joe Biden on any issue?
    # She pronounces “nuclear” like George Bush. I knew that the GOP ticket wanted to continue Bush’s policies….but four more years of Bushisms too!?
    # She supports Obama’s energy plan, all but undercutting the one supposed strength she brings to the ticket.

    From Andrew Sullivan

(C)ompare McCain’s pick with Obama’s: a man with solid foreign policy experience, six terms in Washington and real relationships with leaders across the globe.

One pick is by a man of judgment; the other is by a man of vanity.

She may be a fine person, but she’s my age, she has zero Washington experience, and no foreign policy expertise whatsoever.

McCain has just told us how seriously he takes the war we are in. Not seriously at all.

McCain is running this election with the short term in mind. What can we do to win in November? Not one thought about what happens after that.

    Just like Bush.

  38. Nimrod Gently says:

No, I don’t think Pawlenty or Romney would have been a better choice. They might have actually helped the McCain campaign beyond one shock news item.

Seriously, this is stunt casting. It’s a gimmick. And for some reason it reminds me of Jack Kemp. That wasn’t a thrilling ticket either.

But at least he didn’t go for Huckabee.

  39. Zython says:

The full quote makes it clear that she wanted to know what her specific responsibilities would be so that she could decide if she’d do more than provide ceremonial duties.

In other words, she wanted to know what the VP does, because she didn’t know.

    Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ha ha haaaaaaaaa

    Yup, he’s tweaked.

I wouldn’t worry about him dying too much.

I’m sure there were people that said that about William Henry Harrison.

Do you really think Pawlenty or Mitt Romney would have been the better choice?

    Touche.

I was hoping McCain would pick Katharine Harris. I consider this a silver medal.

  40. Nimrod Gently says:

“She’s not his V.P. choice, she’s his daughter.”

Holy shit, I just realised she really is old enough to be his daughter. Easily.

  41. Changey McHoperson says:

“Does anyone really want Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the Presidency should McCain become unable to serve?”

So one is a heartbeat away with little experience, and the other is that heartbeat with little experience! Please explain how that works?

“she has zero Washington experience, and no foreign policy expertise whatsoever.”

I thought Washington experience was bad in the Obama camp.

  42. Quaker in a Basment says:

OK, OK, we’re all just “poking fun,” Jay. (Isn’t that how you guys do it?)

The truth is, we don’t really know much about Gov. Palin yet. We correctly point out that she’s short on experience. Republicans and other conservatives correctly point out that Mr. Obama is also short on experience.

Mr. Obama has been making his case for the last year and a half. He has convinced me and many others that he’s up to the challenge. Gov. Palin has much less time to demonstrate her capabilities.

If she can do so, more power to her.

  43. Nimrod Gently says:

    Rubber/Glue 2008

  44. Southern Quaker says:

The other arguments are silly, I mean most of the country thinks we should drill in ANWR, and most of the country is against abortion.

No, duh, most of the country supports the idea that abortion should remain legal, with restrictions, a position that John McCain shared until recently. Palin wants to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Can any McCain supporter honestly tell me that he or she thinks Palin is ready to step into the Oval Office, should McCain become incapacitated? That is the only truly important responsibility of the VP – to take over should the unthinkable happen. This is not an unreasonable concern, given McCain’s age and health history. In addition to her woeful lack of national experience, I have to wonder how someone who has an infant son with a serious disability could possibly sacrifice the time and attention necessary to become the president of the United States.

  45. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Jay: “Thanks Duros. My response is here:

“She is known as a reformer because she is a reformer and she is not a product of the corrupt Alaskan political machine.”

She used her power to try and get her ex-brother-in-law fired, during a child custody battle.

If that’s the Republican idea of reform, the party is in serious trouble.

  46. Nimrod Gently says:

If the American public fall for it yet again, she’s the 45th President of the United States for certain.

  47. Jay says:

In other words, she wanted to know what the VP does, because she didn’t know.

In other words, you can’t read or have an understanding of context.

    Typical.

  48. midderpidge says:

As we talk about McCain’s so-called abundance of experience, I’d like to point out that McCain is a sidekick to the most inexperienced and worst President of the last 100 years (if not in the history of this country). His non-W-cheerleader government experience is a portfolio of corruption, favors for his lobbyist buddies, and insider politics. His military experience consists of crashing planes and being interned in a prison camp. His economic experience revolves around marrying a rich heiress. He has few solid issue positions that aren’t dependent on whichever way the wind blows or for outright sale. That’s experience we can’t believe in.

  49. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Whoops, I’m falling behind.

TFJ for Nimrod. Here’s one for Zython too.

  50. juhar says:

Just finished reading Palin’s firing the commissioner that wouldn’t fire her State Trooper ex-brother-in-law Mike Wooten who is in a nasty child custody fight with her sister.

Can’t wait until National Inquire, The Insider and Star send their vultures to Alaska to get to the bottom of Sarah Palin’s Wootengate.

Already she is an internet hit as an atrractive young woman with a hot body. I hope McCain is ready for the newest hottest celebrity to be his “prepared to be President of the United States” running mate.

  51. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Wootengate? That’s sounds like a German porno.

  52. Randy Brown says:

And once again, the hypocrisy of the GOPukes is on display:

They will, in a heartbeat, criticize black voters for supporting Obama on the basis of his skin color. However, their nominee has just drafted a running mate who will specifically be called upon to attract women – on the basis of her gender.

President Barack Obama. Learn to love it. WHOOOO!!

  53. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“In other words, you can’t read or have an understanding of context.”

I haven’t seen the clip (Mozilla is acting up again) but I have read the transcript and it looks bad. It looks really bad. Inexperienced doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Had she said, “I would have to find out what McCain expects his V.P. to be involved with.”, then I would agree with your interpretation. However, it sounds more like general question.

But like I said, I haven’t seen the full clip (if you know of someplace I can download it, that would be great). Perhaps her tone agrees with you.

But regardless, it sounds bad, and perception matters in politics.

  54. Randy Brown says:

“(Y)ou can dress up a con ideologue in minority/female clothes, but the voters know better.”

Or surround him/her with cute little puppies, as was the case with Sambo Steele.

(That’s right, I called him Sambo, ’cause that’s what he is. Sambo, lawn jockey for ex-gov Bobby Smooth. Don’t like it? Too bad.)

  55. Parthenon says:

So after having read a bit more I retract my comment on a previous thread that Gov. Palin is a ‘moderate,’ unless the ends of the spectrum are defined by Bernie Sanders and Ron Paul… I’m having a hard time seeing this as anything other than a sort of electoral “f**k it, let’s see what happens” roll of the dice. Shores up the conservatives with her right-of-Bush positions, makes a bid at whatever’s left of Sen. Clinton’s disaffected camp.

  56. Bruce Henry says:

    What midderpidge said.
Is there a way to get these points across without The Right being able to squawk, “You’re disrespecting his service as a POW!”?

  57. Scratch says:

Listening to the radio today, one thing that struck me is the several people who actually knew her and had worked with her, and they were emphatic about how powerful a candidate she was going to be. And I mean emphatic…well beyond the usual “I know her and she’s a great choice.”

I’m looking forward to seeing her work. At the very least, from what I’ve heard I’m quite certain that she will bring a great deal more to the ticket than the knee-jerk vitriol heard here and other places would suggest.

  58. Quaker in a Basement says:

I’m having a hard time seeing this as anything other than a sort of electoral “f**k it, let’s see what happens” roll of the dice.

    Ah, the Risky Business gambit:

Joel, you wanna know something? Every now and then say, “What the f*ck.” “What the f*ck” gives you freedom. Freedom brings opportunity. Opportunity makes your future.

Next thing you know, we’ll be seeing Johnny Mac dancing alone in his underwear.

  59. Quaker in a Basement says:

the several people who actually knew her and had worked with her, and they were emphatic about how powerful a candidate she was going to be

What portion of them were creationist, anti-choice, pro-oil Republicans?

Pick a number between “all of ‘em” and “every last one.”

  60. Scratch says:

    Hi Quaker…

I have no idea what their positions were on these issues. Do you? They did not address her “rightness,” they spoke only of her effectiveness.

  61. Jay says:

She used her power to try and get her ex-brother-in-law fired, during a child custody battle.

Using Stowbridge Logic here mind you:

    You’re a liar.

Your making statements of fact in an investigation that hasn’t been completed and you have no evidence of her involvement. People who are guilty aren’t so open with sharing information as she has been. There is no logic to the idea that Palin, who exposed and fought corruption at the highest levels of government in that state (against other Republicans mind you) would do something so absurd. Of course, that’s why she’s been so cooperative. She was surrounded by a corrupt political machine and confronted it head on. Obama on the other hand, was surrounded by similar corrupt machine politics and he passively consented to it.

    Again, there’s no ‘there’ there.

That’s right, I called him Sambo, ’cause that’s what he is. Sambo, lawn jockey for ex-gov Bobby Smooth. Don’t like it? Too bad.

    And everybody is SO impressed.

  62. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Me: “She used her power to try and get her ex-brother-in-law fired, during a child custody battle.”

Jay: “Using Stowbridge Logic here mind you:
    You’re a liar.”

You are just a fucking moron.

Jay Tea made a claim based on facts only the people involved in the criminal conspiracy could know.

I made a claim based on what has been reported in the press.

Can’t see the difference? Then you are retarded.

And the arguments of a retard matter little in a political debate. Too bad so many of them vote.

  63. Jay says:

I made a claim based on what has been reported in the press.

Oh wow! It was reported in the press! Therefore it must be true!

The ‘press’ also reports that Batboy lives CS.

    Cripes you are a twit.

  64. duh says:

No, CS is a member of the “press”, such as it is. He is biased.

If you can consider writing for a free newspaper a member of the “press” that is.

  65. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Me: “I made a claim based on what has been reported in the press.

Jay: “Oh wow! It was reported in the press! Therefore it must be true!”

I have outside evidence to back up my claim. Jay Tea was making claims that only someone involved in the criminal conspiracy would know.

    See the difference?

“The ‘press’ also reports that Batboy lives CS.”

    Obviously not, you fucking retard.

  66. Bruce Henry says:

Reading you guys is like watching William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal debate back in the day.
Except that it’s NOTHING like it.
    Grow up.

  67. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“Reading you guys is like watching William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal debate back in the day.”

If William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal ever debated Jay for 5 minutes, they would tell him to shut the fuck up as well.

But don’t let facts get in the way of your Golden Mean fallacy.

  68. Jay Tea says:

Wow, I don’t even have to say anything for Strowbridge to get all worked up about me. I’m SO flattered.

Strowbridge is incensed that I dared express an opinion without carefully qualifying it as such, as most people do most of the time. For example, just looking up the page, we see Strowbridge asserting, as fact, the following:

She used her power to try and get her ex-brother-in-law fired, during a child custody battle.

Not been proven yet, and so far all the reports from the investigation into that charge are making her look pretty damned good. But the mere fact that there is an INVESTIGATION is enough to damn her in the eyes of Strowbridge and his ilk — who conveniently overlook how the folks behind the charges are the same corrupt Republicans whose asses she’s been kicking for the last few years.

Yeah, it looks like Strowbridge is “making claims that only someone involved in the… conspiracy would know.” And as we know, that is a heinous, horrible, evil offense.

I think I know the real reason why Oliver and folks like him are so bent out of shape over Palin: they’ve bought into all the things Obama claims to be — and Palin actually IS most of them.

And no, I’m not going to elaborate on that one here. I’m saving that one for Wizbang.

    J.

  69. Jay Tea says:

Oh, and a few facts that Strowbridge apparently doesn’t think are relevant:

    1) The Alaska State Police is the agency directly responsible for the physical safety of the governor and immediate family.

    2) The trooper in question threatened to kill Palin’s father and sister, among numerous other offenses.

    3) The State police decided that the trooper’s offenses merited a ten-day suspension.

    4) The union representing the trooper fought and won a reduction of the suspension to five days.

Palin was not only an ear-witness to the threats to her sister and father, but her daughter was an eye-witness to the trooper in question tasering his 11-year-old stepson.

THIS GUY WAS PART OF THE ORGANIZATION THAT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING HER AND HER FAMILY SAFE. AND THAT ORGANIZATION WAS LETTING HIM OFF WITH A SLAP ON THE WRIST.

So, yeah, technically Strowbridge is correct, saying that this all came out “during” a child custody fight, but it was hardly “because” of a child custody fight. That, I believe, is called “lying by omission.”

If you’re trying to bring down Palin, Strowbridge, I have no choice but to bring up a quote that I’m sure you’ve gleefully cited numerous times:

“You’re doing a heckuva job, Strowie.”

  70. midderpidge says:

    Isn’t that special?

    McCain/ Churchlady 2008.

Makes my naughty bits go all tingly.

  71. Jay Tea says:

Careful, midderpidge, you’re treading dangerously close to infringing on Chris Matthews’ “thrill up my leg” schtick, and I think he holds a copyright on that one.

    J.

  72. midderpidge says:

    One last point then:

Maybe her selection will prove that McCain does believe in Affirmative Action.

  73. juhar says:

    Jay Tea,

One fact you do not understand is “alleged threat” and “alleged other offenses” that’s the facts.

  74. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“AND THAT ORGANIZATION WAS LETTING HIM OFF WITH A SLAP ON THE WRIST.”

And you know this how? Are you part of this organization? Were you there when evidence was presented?

You’ve made a conclusion not supported by the facts, again.

It’s like it is pathological with you. Instead of sticking with the evidence, you go one step further and make conclusions you can’t possibly support. I think the evidence is strong that you are incapable of telling the difference. You don’t know the difference between objective reality, and the fantasy you create to support your preconceived notions.

“If you’re trying to bring down Palin, Strowbridge, I have no choice but to bring up a quote that I’m sure you’ve gleefully cited numerous times:”

And you are wrong again. How does it feel to be so fucking stupid?

  75. Parthenon says:

I think all any of us can say with certainty regarding the Wooten investigation is that none of us were there and for now, we just don’t know one way or the other until the investigation does its work.

And there are certainly more bothersome things about Gov. Palin – what’s worse, that she once may have abused her executive power in firing a state trooper or that she doesn’t believe global warming is man-made and doesn’t believe homosexual couples deserve civil rights?

  76. Jay Tea says:

Strowbridge, I summarized: the State Police gave Wooten a ten-day suspension. The union fought it down to a five-day suspension. As in, #3 and #4 cited above.

How does someone so stupid even remember to breathe?

    J.

  77. Duros Hussein 62 says:

I was hoping McCain would pick Katharine Harris. I consider this a silver medal.

    Me too.

I stand by my shorter, Jay. Your candidate screwed the pooch on this one.
Wouldn’t it be precious if they put her name up at the convention and she gets rejected? That’s what you get when you drunk dial looking for running mates, I guess.

  78. duh says:

Parthenon, Palin signed legislation establishing civil benefits for same sex couples.

But the other points are right on. I also have it on good information that she doesn’t believe in Unicorns or Global Warming. Also, she may have been investigated for tearing off those mattress labels that say “Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law”.

  79. Todd Dugdale says:

Wow. The Republicans’ heads are spinning around.

By picking Palin, McCain takes the “Obama is too inexperienced” issue right off the table, which was his only non-smear issue.

By picking Palin, McCain gives up on the independents. Palin is a complete 28%-er who backs Bush completely. She is also a creationist, hard-line pro-life, and evangelical Christian. You don’t pick up independents with someone like that. If independents had those views, then they wouldn’t be independents – they’d already be Republicans.

By picking Palin, McCain actually alienates women voters. It takes a Republican Kool-Aid drinker to believe that women will vote for McCain simply because a woman is on the ticket, especially since that woman is completely out of the mainstream political views that the strong majority of women hold.

This is a move to appeal to the Republican base, which it will. The problem is, though, that McCain already has 87% of that base locked up. And that base is a lot smaller than it was in 2004, while the number who self-identify as Democrats has increased by 10% to record highs.

Palin will definitely improve the turnout among Republican evangelicals, but their numbers have also dropped since since 2004 in a generational split.

Palin will be under intense media in the next two months to a degree that the Governor of Alaska never was. It is almost certain that she will make some gaffe, which Republicans will be forced to defend.

Meanwhile, all McCain has left against Obama are smears: Ayers, Rezko, secret Muslim, crazy radical, and unpatriotic. None of these have gained traction despite being given heavy play in the primary and by McCain surrogates for several months. And Biden, HRC, and Bill will be attacking McCain constantly on his weaknesses. Being a “war hero” just won’t cut it.

  80. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Strowbridge, I summarized: the State Police gave Wooten a ten-day suspension. The union fought it down to a five-day suspension. As in, #3 and #4 cited above.

    And that was wrong.
You know what else is wrong? Using the power of the Governor’s office to override it.

  81. Duros Hussein 62 says:

No, CS is a member of the “press”, such as it is. He is biased.

If you can consider writing for a free newspaper a member of the “press” that is.

More convinced than ever that DUHHHH is Dr. Pee-dro. That’s his MO.

  82. Parthenon says:

Palin signed legislation establishing civil benefits for same sex couples.

Well, damn. The story I read was old. She does appear to be fairly extreme otherwise though.

But the other points are right on. I also have it on good information that she doesn’t believe in Unicorns or Global Warming.

Of course you’re not suggesting belief in unicorns is tantamount to ‘belief’ in global warming…

  83. duh says:

Well, I was, and now I feel badly about. You are always such a gentleman about these things.

I actually prefer not to “believe” in scientific things. I think you either have evidence that supports or refutes it. I don’t think anthrogenic global warming is a proven theory. I do believe we should do what we can to decrease pollution in general, but not at the expense of our economy.

    But this isn’t a global warming debate…

Oh Hussein, I am not a Dr, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night…..

  84. Jay Tea says:

Strowbridge, here are the facts, via Flopping Aces — links in his article go to official state documents.

    http://www.floppingaces.net/2008/08/29/palins-troopergate-beating-msm-distortions-to-the-truth/#more-7482

Wooten was found guilty of three incidents of Unbecoming Conduct, three incidents of Personal Conduct, one incident Failure To Perform Duties Properly/Use Of Government Property, two incidents of Conformance To Laws, one incident of Use Of Alcohol, and one incident of Operation to be prudent and lawful. The particulars cited — not in their entirety:

    1) Using a taser on his ten-year-old stepson.
    2) Shooting a cow moose under his wife’s permit.
    3) Drinking a beer immediately before and during his shift, while driving a ASP cruiser.

For THAT, the State Police chose to give him a ten-day suspension. And for THAT, the union said five days was more than sufficient.

Further, there’s still no proof that Palin actually intervened to get him fired. She removed the head of the State Police — a political appointee, that she had the right to remove at will — after several very public disagreements about budget matters and other issues. She offered him a different position (head of enforcing alcohol laws), but he refused it.

Further, Palin has cooperated fully with the investigation. They have not had to issue a single subpoena — everything and anything they’ve asked for, they’ve gotten in a very timely manner. Contrast that with the Rose Law Firm billing records or William Jefferson, who almost triggered a Constitutional crisis.

You wanna keep sticking up for a drunken cop who tasers children? That’s your call.

Oh, and Strowbridge, note that while you can say whatever you want about Curt from Flopping Aces, he actually links to the public-record documents that prove all this.

    Facts. Try ‘em sometime.

    J.

  85. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Who is sticking up for the guy? Where is that coming from?

  86. Zython says:

Oh Hussein, I am not a Dr, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night…..

    That’s OK, neither was pedro.

  87. Bruce Henry says:

Mr Strowbridge, it appears I pissed you off by attempting to step in between you and Jay. I don’t know what made me think I had any right to do so, or why I thought that I was being clever. I apologize.

    But not to Jay.

  88. Jay Tea says:

The theory here being applied to Palin seems to be “if it can possibly appear improper, by cherry-picking facts and events and stringing them into the least favorable light, then it is automatically wrong and corrupt and punishable,” then let’s apply the same theory elsewhere, shall we?

    1) Michelle Obama gets hired by the University of Chicago Hospital.

    2) Barack Obama gets elected to the United States Senate.

    3) Michelle Obama gets a promotion and a 160% raise.

    4) Barack Obama steers a $1,000,000 earmark to the University of Chicago Hospital.

Can we say “quid pro quo, Clarice?”
