Over the top? Johnny Mac has some class. Com’on you can grudgingly admit that, ;)

John McCain is airing a one-evening-only ad with a simple message for Barack Obama: “Job well done.” The ad coincides with Obama’s nomination acceptance speech.

McCain congratulates Obama for his nomination. McCain recognizes the symbolism of a black man accepting the nomination on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The ad will run Thursday on national cable television before and after Obama’s address.

McCain says: “Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America. Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So I wanted to stop and say, congratulations. How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we’ll be back at it. But tonight Senator, job well done.”

    Cool!

    Obama/Biden ‘08

  3. SaveFarris says:

“I came here to see Obama’s speech, not the back of Wolf Blitzer’s head!!!”

He has his (lucid) moments, yes. He has not lost the ability to be a gentleman. Hope they let him keep that.

Are you suggesting that Professional POW Johnny wrote that schidt himself?

  6. Jay says:

10 bucks says some idiotic lefty claims that McCain’s reference to MLK is nothing but “code” (or “dog whistle” or whatever other idiotic euphemisms the left can come up with) for reminding voters that Barack Obama is BLACK.

    I’m certain one will.

However, I’m guessing it will be someone of even less stature than the commenter on this blog who will try to tar the rest of us with it.

  8. Parthenon says:

That was a very nice little ad of Sen. McCain’s. I’m sure he genuinely feels that way, but it does make him look very classy, which is a voter mark in his favor (especially for the indies without the attention span or inclination to be policy wonks). I’m not saying that’s for sure WHY he did it, only that a candidate this time of year (very sensibly) doesn’t go out of his way spending money without getting a return.

  9. ed says:

Jebus, McCain’s doing the concern trolling himself. Rove’s hoping that the Dems will fall for it again this time. Last time Rove et al concerned trolled with “I just hope the Dems won’t be mean to [Worst President Ever] at their convention.” Kerry et al fell for it, and were repayed with purple band aids and worse. What a bunch of country club assholes the Republican Party is. I hope McCain is portrayed as the deeply addled, confused, angry, and “drooling for power like a fruit bat with rabies” that that coddled, mean-spirited, war-monger is.

    Don’t fall for it, people.

  10. Jay says:

    Shorter ed: Wahhhhhhhhh!!

Hey, I just did an ‘ed’!

“Over the top? Johnny Mac has some class. Com’on you can grudgingly admit that …”

Class? Whatever. The question I have is what happens once the McCain campaign returns to form the day after? I can’t wait for two months of conservatives dismissing McCain mudslinging because, hey, he aired that one ad that one time that proved he had class.

I don’t think this is any kind “dog whistle” but don’t tell me that it won’t be used to provide McCain months of cover for anything his campaign does next. This is politics. The McCain camp isn’t doing this because deep down they’re a bunch of sweethearts or because McCain is some super special classy guy.

Maybe I’ll think differently if McCain follows it up with a respectful, issues oriented media campaign but I’m not holding my breath. And I guarantee you that when a liberal complains about the next McCain ad, the right will point this one in defense. Without question.

Funny you should say that, Quaker. Yesterday I was almost moved to write a post requesting that we limit our complaints and criticisms to things that have actually been said rather than what we imagine someone might say. But then I thought, “Ahh, f*** it.”

  13. Bruce Henry says:

Right, because, really, how can we know what Karl Rove’s minions and proteges will say? I mean, let’s just wait and see, shall we?

  14. JK says:

Brother…what a sham. Invesco Field. Wow….70,000 people coming to hear Bruce Spring… uh…I mean, Barack Obama.

I’d make my way there if I heard the Boss would be playing.

As a former Democrat….embarrasing. It plays into the “God-Like” mockery of Obama.

Having said that, I’m waiting to hear what he has to say, although my mind is made up. I’m voting for the old guy.

What a missed opportunity for the Democrats….then again, I’ve been saying that since 2000.

Funny…Jay may remember this…in 2000..he wrote me an IM and told me “Congrats” because Fla. had been called for Gore. Oh well…we know how that turned out.

Now, it appears me and my old nemesis are on the same team.

What do they say? Politics makes for strange befellows.

    JK

  15. Jaim says:

Shorter JK: Obama can draw a crowd of tens of thousands. McCain is lucky if he can get 5,000.

This is obviously horrible news for Obama.

Oh, and I voted for a Democrat once so that means my opinions are more fair and balanced than anyone else’s here. I’m the FOX News of OW.com, amirite?

  16. JK says:

Hey….great speech by Obama. One of the best I’ve ever heard. No kidding. I smiled. I am proud of this country.

Don’t listen to the paid hacks on Fox News.

History was made…I nearly came to tears because an African-American is a now a major candiate for the leader of the free-world.

Still voting for the old guy. My mind is made up, but I thing we all won tonight.

    JK

  17. SpiderJ says:

Yeah, I’m sure the Obama campaign was really biting their nails to keep themselves safe from the attack that he’s wildly popular.

“Okay, so we cap the number of Obama supporters we allow in public to be, oh, less than a thousand. That way, nobody can say he thinks he’s the Messiah.”

70,000 Democrats don’t really miss you, JK.

  18. JK says:

Jaim, I’ve voted Democrat for President since 1980. If I could have voted for Carter, McGovern, Humprhey and Kennedy, I would have. I was too young.

In 1972, when my 4th Grade Teacher asked us all to hold a mock election in the classroom, I was the only one standing on the McGovern side.

    Oh..one thing….learn to write.

    JK

  19. Bruce Henry says:

Wow, JK. Perhaps you’ll tell us why your “mind is made up” after hearing 50 minutes of specifics from the so-called “substance-free” candidate.
From now on, everything you post here will be greeted with equanimity, as we can all tell how fair and balanced you are.
You’re a regular Brit Hume, by God.

  20. Bruce Henry says:

Oh, and thanks for the advice about FOX. They almost had me!

  21. John says:

I feel that a large number of Americans, of both parties, allow themselves to be whipped into a frothing frenzy.

As mature adults, no one here can legitimately sit and say that John McCain or Barack Obama are evil people intent on destroying the United States. If you do, you stand on the fringe and are in desperate need of re-centering in the reality of our world. Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, both refer to John McCain as there friend. Hell, Hillary even had a Vodka Drinking contest with John McCain on one of their mutual trips abroad.

Both men have profound beliefs formed through their vastly different experiences living inside and outside the US. The lean of their politics is merely a reflection of their individual life paths.

Please stop with the baseless McCain demonization. I have never posted such filth about Sen. Obama. I would be ashamed of myself as a thinking man and an American had I done so.

Everyone begs fro campaigns driven by intellectual assessment of policy, position, and substance. Yet every 4 years, we let slip the dogs of war and further polarize our respective parties. In the words of a wrongly beaten black man, “Can’t we all just get along?”

  22. SpiderJ says:

Bruce, I can sum up JK’s defection in three words: “Hillary Wuz Robbed.”

  23. PD100 says:

10 bucks says some idiotic lefty claims..

20 bucks says you brushed once this week.

  24. ed says:

    Don’t feed the concern troll.

  25. Jaim says:

    “Oh..one thing….learn to write.”

Says the guy who types like a thirteen year-old girl texting her BFF.

  26. Bruce Henry says:

“Jaim, I’ve voted Democrat for President since 1980. If I could have voted for Carter,….I would have. I was too young.”

Umm, you do remember who was the Democratic candidate in 1980, don’t you, JK?

  27. Duros Hussein62 says:

Are you suggesting that Professional POW Johnny wrote that schidt himself?

Well, no, of course not. And in a couple of weeks he may deny ever having said it. My wife said the same thing: I’m not buying it. Maybe he’s just looking for a sympathy vote, one which JK will gleefully provide.

JK, you’ve never explained why McNovocain is your candidate.

  28. Bruce Henry says:

Psst, Duros…it’s ’cause he’s not, you know, …black. Ssshhh.
