I tell you, anyone who ever uses Greek style columns clearly hates America. This election is about the people versus the powerful… media.
’)
The right-wing blog-comment trolls seem to be avoiding this talking point like the plague. Even they seem to know that pushing it makes them look stupid.
So Barack puts himself on par with Lincoln, Jefferson, and the Constitution itself: got it.
I can’t speak for the 812 other Jays that post here, but my take is that this is our version of HouseGate: something for us to make silly jokes about for 24 hours that will be absolutely meaningless come November.
If by next Tuesday people are still making column jokes, then we’ll be (rightly) derided as just as sad and pathetic as the “Ask me how many homes I own” crowd.
Who is claiming the use of the columns has ANYTHING to do with love of America?
It has to do with Obama projecting himself (again) as larger than life.
It’s not about the Greek Style Architecture. If you are trying to prove to the American people that you are not an arrogant asshat, it would be best not to parade around in the most arrogant asshatty way possible. Barry makes Bill Clinton look downright humble by comparison.
Bush gave speeches behind DC-style backdrops all the time, both before and during his presidency. What exactly is so uppity- I’m sorry, “arrogant,” about Obama having a (gasp!) telegenic press conference?
It has to do with Obama projecting himself (again) as larger than life.
*cough*
Well, JWG shocks even me with his ability to make himself out to be a moron.
Hey, JWG, what are you some kind ig idiot? Because only an idiot would claim that neoclassical architecture is some sort of shocking thing. Seriously, are you trying to show us what an idiot you are? I’ve never heard such a kerfluffle so stupid in my entire life, and I thought that you’d have enough of a sense of shame to avoid this one.
Seriously, I’ve never heard some people say such stupid things in my entire life: it’s a sign that aligning oneself with the Republican party causes your brain to shut down. If you’re going to keep babbling about columns, then you’re going to out-yourself as a braindead moron who mindlessly repeats STUPID talking points and has no place in polite society.
but my take is that this is our version of HouseGate: something for us to make silly jokes about for 24 hours that will be absolutely meaningless come November.
Reality’s take is that this is Day 8 of you guys talking about how it’s not worth talking about. I love it.
August, this is a bit different…
“Some 80,000 supporters will see Obama appear from between plywood columns painted off-white, reminiscent of Washington’s Capitol building or even the White House, to accept the party’s nomination for president.
He will stride out to a raised platform to a podium that can be raised from beneath the floor. Once Obama speaks, confetti will rain down on him and fireworks will be fired off from locations around the stadium wall.”
Also, this doesn’t sound very “Green” to me. Did Algore approve?
Wow, Tyco. Way to completely miss the point.
I merely corrected Oliver on the charge being made about the columns. It has nothing to do with love of country.
If Oliver is actually correct, then feel free to post some evidence. However, you might want to take your medication first.
So Barack puts himself on par with Lincoln, Jefferson, and the Constitution itself:
It has to do with Obama projecting himself (again) as larger than life.
If you are trying to prove to the American people that you are not an arrogant asshat, it would be best not to parade around in the most arrogant asshatty way possible.
Get a grip, folks. It’s a background. There are about 50,000 public buildings all over the country that have big ol’ Greek columns. You’re reading way too much into a picture of some columns.
Compared to this, the “Obama is a secret Muslim” smear reads like Thomas Paine. Clearly, you people got nothin’.
Shorter trolls: “Why is Barack Obama so uppity?”
JWG, no you are missing the point– the point is that you’ve started running with a talking point that is the domains of idiots and morons. It makes no sense…. it’s completely self-contradictory. Running with the talking point, as you do, only outs you as a person easily deluded and manipulated.
What oliver is saying is that, “What is more American than neoclassical civic architecture?” Right-wingers, being completely incapable of making this connection, but only mindlessly having heard a talking points fact that told them to run with this, are blindly repeating them. Except, I thought, a few right-wing trolls who didn’t want to be embarassed by associating themselves with it.
The fact, JWG, is this: it wouldn’t make any sense to use this line under any circumstances… it only makes sense for Republicans to use this line against Obama, because Republicans will mindlessly repeat anything they are told, no matter how stupdi– and this whining about columns is, at its base, stupid. What you should be doing is agreeing with Oliver and apologizing for the embarassing behavior of the right-wingers with whom you have associated yourself, like the commenter above you who, if he’s an example of the sort of person supporting McCain, reflects badly on our nation.
Seriously, Tyco…you’ve worked yourself into a frenzy. Calm down. Obama is getting teased. It’s not worth blowing an artery.
JWG, you are acting like a rank idiot. Only an idiot would use this line of attack against Obama (or any candidate). Why you’re proud of acting like an idiot, I don’t know, but at least it’s good to know that you are, for future reference.
As I said, you should be apologizing for the stupidity of your fellow travelers. You’ve provided no evidence that this attack on Obama makes any sense– it’s just a talking point being pushed by a group of like-minded Republicans or are too dim-witted to understand how stupid it is. I suggest you tell your friends to stop, because it will forever sully them as part of stupid. Seriously, you want to start mocking ever neo-classical piece of civic architecture done, ever, by anyone? If you don’t want to look like an idiot, I suggest you not back up this meme.
August, this is a bit different…
No it’s not.
Obama uses traditional Greek columns and that makes him unamerican, but john McCain who supports oppresive economic policies can’t remember how many mansions he owns is a standup guy.
I will never be dumb enough to be a con. See y’all in the dustbin of history.
Y’all make it sound as if Obama planned and built this whole thing by himself. I seriously doubt it.
Of course, if McCain were at the center of all this, it would be noble and honorable and justified because of his “service as a POW” or something. (How does one “serve” as a POW anyway/)
Then again, when I think of McCain pulling such an act, I immediately think of Stonehenge from Spinal Tap.
Let. It. Go.
Obama uses traditional Greek columns and that makes him unamerican
Oliver, please name a single person that has said Obama is “unAmerican” because of this.
Give it a rest ok?
Again, it’s not about the stage, it’s Barry proving that he is a narcissistic celebrity.
A slight difference between Bush standing in front of White-House-Looking-Pillars in 2004 and Senator Obama standing in front of White-House-Looking-Pillars in 2008 is that, in 2004, Bush was actually the President of the United States, living in said White House.
Because I haven’t defended it. You’re so spazzed out that you can’t see straight. I’m not making the accusations. I’m not going to defend the accusations. I’m just going to enjoy watching you freak out over them.
Give it a rest ok?
You should be telling the right wing to give it a rest so that they stop making asses out of themselves.
And JWG, don’t ally yourselves with idiots, that’s what I’m saying.
Again, it’s not about the stage
The right wingers are screaming and crying about the stage. And their followers are idiots, so they’re doing the same thing.
Right wingers never thought to complain about columns before. Why did they start now? Because they’re stupid and because they were told to. And JWG is pissed because Oliver point blank said that the right wing was acting like a bunch of idiots, pushing stuff that makes no sense and makes them look foolish.
I’m laughing my ass off.
You’re throwing tantrums because Obama gets teased.
Oliver, please name a single person that has said Obama is “unAmerican” because of this.
Give it a rest ok?
Commenters read stupid meanings into some PR flack’s choice of a background.
Obama will speak in front of a backdrop that looks like practically every single government building in America from the county courthouse in the smallest backwater town in Alabama to the White House itself. These chattering monkeys claim this is an indicator of Obama arrogance or presumption.
Yes, clearly it’s Oliver who needs to “give it a rest,” Jay.
Then again, when I think of McCain pulling such an act, I immediately think of Stonehenge from Spinal Tap.
Baw!
That would be priceless if Obama came out and the columns only came up to his knees.
“Again, it’s not about the stage-
Nope.
Never has.
JWG, actually, I’m telling you to stop being an idiot. It’s a condemnation of rank idiocy on the part of the McCainiancs. If they’re so stupid as to claim that columns are unAmerican, they’re too stupid to be telling us whom we should vote for.
This isn’t about which candidate used columns in the past (obviously, candidates do, and no one thought it was a bad idea before), it’s about a group of right-wing lemmings screaming about columns because they were told do by a bunch of right-wing campaign staffers who seem to enjoy acting like idiots in public. Now, JWG, you want to align yourself with idiocy, that’s your business, but it has to be called like it is: idiocy and stupidity. To say nothing of hypocrisy. If supporters of McCain are people like you and “Changey,” I can only assume that this is a group that we don’t want anywhere near the government. If you’re going to support such stupidity being promoted in public, then it’s clear that you, too, are too stupid to be talking about politics. And you don’t even see anything wrong with that stupidity.
Maybe, JWG, if you didn’t align yourself with the very stupid in America, instead of condemning idiocy, you’d be easier to take seriously. The problem is that you endorse stupidity with pride.
That would be priceless if Obama came out and the columns only came up to his knees.
Ok, I admit, that would be awesome/hilarious.
It has nothing to do with love of country.
Dumbass. It was claimed to be a “pagan temple.” Why? Because Republicans, by and large, are too stupid to realize that columns are part of American civic architecture. People promoting the “greek temple” meme are nothing but idiots, and the people, such as yourself, who are trying to “correct” Oliver, rather than apologizing for the idiocy of the Republicans, right now, have no business having their political opinions taken seriously.
You should be telling the right wing to give it a rest so that they stop making asses out of themselves.
The only making an ass out of themselves is you with your frothing diatribes. If the issue is so ’stupid’ and ‘idiotic’ as you claim, why are you getting into such an uproar?
Maybe, JWG, if you didn’t align yourself with the very stupid in America, instead of condemning idiocy, you’d be easier to take seriously. The problem is that you endorse stupidity with pride.
If JWG did that, he’d be a Democrat.
Obama’s new campaign attack against the Republicans! That’ll knock away the elitism charges for sure!!
Please show me where someone claimed it to be a Pagan temple.
OK, Tyco…you win.
On behalf of every very stupid, unamerican, racist who will not be voting for Obama, I apologize for not bowing down and worshiping The One.
“You’re throwing tantrums because Obama gets teased.”
Changey,
Are you just teasing?
Obama’s new campaign attack against the Republicans!
You have to be very stupid to be pushing that meme, so if the shoe fits… it’s not an attack on Republicans so much as a demonstration of why they shouldn’t be near government.
It’s more of my attack on you and Changey: if you promote the “columns” idiocy, I call you stupid. Because you are. And the rest of your political opinions are probably pretty worthless as well. You don’t get a “pass” on saying stupid things in public simply because you’re a Republican. Seriously, if you, like Changey, are pushing the “OMG columns!” thing, you’re an idiot. It’s why I have little intellectual respect for Republicans of the sort who repeat the talking points of the day. The problem is that they believe themselves to be “knowledgeable about politics,” when in fact they’re profoundly stupid. While certain people might consider this “unfair,” the use of this “columns” attack unfortunately outs them as just as stupid as Democrats have accused them of being. Do you disagree? If they were intelligent human beings, would they be saying stuff like that?
Please show me where someone claimed it to be a Pagan temple.
Do a google news search for “temple obama”.
I thought I got this link from here: the complete squelch.
http://www.bobcesca.com/blog-archives/2008/08/presumptuous_gr.html
Jay, you wanted a name?
Captain Ed:
Tyro- I wish I could type slower so you could understand, it IS NOT about the columns! It is but one instance of numerous arrogant stunts the Obama campaign has pulled. I wouldn’t be too surprised if they didn’t superimpose his visage on Mt. Fucking Rushmore.
Quaker, your quote from Captain Ed doesn’t have Captain Ed saying it was an unamerican background, just that it’s not a traditional American background. That Captain Ed isn’t familiar with the fact basically every government building built before the 70s had the same classical look makes him a bit ignorant of American building design, not someone saying that it is “unamerican” for the Senator to accept the nomination in front of such a facade.
Far be it for me to question the aesthetic choices of people who do such large-scale, important, public events, but this stage is probably going to look unappealing from any angle except the ones for the TV cameras. Such considerations didn’t matter before the advent of YouTube and Flickr, but they do now. Those 80,000 people will be taking pictures and video of this momentous occasion and posting them for the world to see. And they will see a picture of Senator Obama standing near some unflatteringly lit, cheesy plywood pillars.
I wouldn’t be too surprised if they didn’t superimpose his visage on Mt. Fucking Rushmore.
You mean like this, Mr. McHoperson?
..your quote from Captain Ed doesn’t have Captain Ed saying it was an unamerican background, just that it’s not a traditional American background.
Ok, I’ll bite.
What would that be? A broken-down sharecropper’s shack?
Given the fact that Greek Revival is not only on practically ever government and federal building, but on a majority of most banks, to say nothing of Wall Street, was very popular around the turn of the century as a symbol of authority, and was the centerpiece of the Chicago World’s Fair, what would be sufficently “American” enough for you guys?
your quote from Captain Ed doesn’t have Captain Ed saying it was an unamerican background, just that it’s not a traditional American background.
Uh..OK. He’s not saying it’s unAmerican he’s just saying it’s not American. I can see the difference there. Kind of. In a not-at-all sort of way.
On behalf of every very stupid, unamerican, racist
Hard to call you anything else when your ilk denies homosexuals rights for shits and giggles.
Haw!
Sometime during the speech tonight, it will occur to the media to intercut Obama, speaking on August 28, in front of classical columns, with MLKjr, speaking on August 28 — in front of the classical columns of the Lincoln Memorial.
The right wingers are screaming and crying about the stage.
Actually, most of us are laughing and making jokes.
Commenters read stupid meanings into some PR flack’s choice of a background.
Defenders sure are being generous excusing the ham-handedness with which Obama’s staff has performed. Who hired these guys? Oh … right …
I’m sick of wealthy conservatives running the American discourse.
Let’s fight back: http://fightingdirty08.wordpress.com/
excusing the ham-handedness with which Obama’s staff has performed
Golly, you missed the point again. No ham-handedness. No hidden meanings. No arrogance.
They’re freaking columns.
Quaker, that’s called a “picture.” Similar to the ones of Barry with a halo.
http://www.centerforinquiry.net/forums/viewthread/4096/
I wouldn’t be too surprised if they didn’t superimpose his visage on Mt. Fucking Rushmore.
Designed by the same people who design Brittany Spears tour sets. Do’h!
Keep scrolling on down that page, McHoperson.
Ok, your point?
My point? Did you miss it?
Here ya go.
(Are we playing Chutes and Ladders now?)
“It’s about Obama projecting himself (again) as larger than life”.
I agree.
I mean, the only thing that would be worse is if he was landing a jet on an aircraft carrier and parading around in a codpiece-equipped flight suit, proclaiming “Mission Accomplished”.
Designed by the same people who design Brittany Spears tour sets. Do’h!
Reaching for soaring new heights in oratory, are you? The digestive accidents of an immature stoat are Churchillian by comparsion.
The crazy thing is, that’s not the first time I’ve heard the words “digestive accidents” and “Churchillian” in the same sentence. I swear to God.
The crazy thing is, that’s not the first time I’ve heard the words “digestive accidents” and “Churchillian” in the same sentence.
Man, what’s a guy gotta do to come up with a genuinely original taunt these days?!
“It’s about Obama projecting himself (again) as larger than life”.
I believe the word you’re looking for here is “presidential.” Obama is projecting himself as “presidential.”
God forbid a candidate for the office of president would want to project an image of himself as “presidential.”
This is yet another example of how the conservative message machine works. It will criticize and lampoon anything a Dem does no matter how normal, no matter how by the book, no matter how much Republicans actually do the same thing, all the time.
Conservatives may as well just come out and bitch, “How dare Barack Obama run a presidential campaign! Who does he think he is?”
“Designed by the same people who design Brittany Spears tour sets. Do’h!”
In other words, “Obama hired professional set designers to design a professional set? What a gaffe.”
Just for future reference, what can the Obamasiah be criticized for that won’t result in cries from the left that his patriotism is being questioned?
I’ll take your answers off the air, jackasses.
No one can tell me what a more “traditional American” set would look like? Come on, guys.
Debates about policy specifics come to mind.
You know, I wonder what all these Republicans will say on the day after election day if Obama does win. How will they be able to say they’ll assume the role of loyal opposition after they’ve said repeatedly that the new Commander-in-Chief is “dangerously unready” to be president? Do they not know that this undermines our international standing if Obama wins?
Why do they hate America.
arrogant stunts
I wonder what it is about Obama that every normal thing is does is considered an “arrogant stunt.” Columns in a set-stage are arrogant? Since when?
This is, of course, just part of a pattern of believing that certain people shouldn’t lead or aspire to positions of power and should instead leave it to their “betters” like, say, John McCain. And if making the sort of idiotic rants about “columns” that make no sense what so ever is what the need to express this sentiment, they do it.
Hopey: get something straight– when you claim that there is something wrong with “columns” on a set, and we people claim it’s like a “temple,” rather than normal civic architecture, they are acting like idiots. Only an idiot would say something like that, which is why right-wingers are saying it. Don’t want to sound like an idiot? Cut the crap and apologize for the fact that the people on your side of acting like morons.
Debates about policy specifics come to mind.
Yeah like watching for almost 10 days the Obama-bots drone on about McCain’s houses. Great policy specifics there.
Jay’s right. Let’s stop criticizing McCain’s inability to remember how many houses he owns so we can get back to the business of criticizing Obama’s set design. “You do it too” is childish and immature unless a McCain supporter did it last.
Yeah like watching for almost 10 days the Obama-bots drone on about McCain’s houses. Great policy specifics there.
Actually, the only person trying to breathe new life into that ex-equine is…um, you.
We now return you to the discussion of “The Meaning of Columns as Interpreted by the Clinically Insane,” already in progress.
As far as I can tell, the “Messiah” thing rises from Republican bitterness at having a candidate the other side is excited about.
But it makes me wonder what they thought they were feeling when they had the EXACT SAME RESPONSE to Bush in 2000 and 2004.
When Democrats are excited about a candidate who declares himself worthy of leadership, we’re cultists. When Republicans do it, it’s…um…not. I guess.
Folks, this is an appearance in front of 80,000 people. Obama’s handlers might have chosen lime jello like McCain’s handlers, but there just isn’t that much lime jello in the world.
Actually, the only person trying to breathe new life into that ex-equine is…um, you.
That’s right. It was me passing out those buttons at the DNC the night before last.
“Yeah like watching for almost 10 days the Obama-bots drone on about McCain’s houses.”
And like the ten days before that McCain and his minions droned on about Obama as a lighweight celebrity. And the ten days before that they spent pushing a false story about Obama blowing off wounded troops in Germany. Great policy specifics there, as well.
D’oh! I forgot! When you’re talking to Jay, you have to apply Jay’s Special Theory of Relevance!
Buttons passed out two days ago at the DNC? Relevant to this discussion.
The content of this thread? NOT relevant to this discussion.
So I’m going to try to straighten this out:
McCain’s “Celebrity” ads – no longer relevant, that was so long ago.
The “How Many Houses” buttons – two days old and not mentioned in this thread, but still somehow it makes Democrats look bad, but not McCain…
Oh, hell. I’ll never get this untangled.
How many of us really have the attention span for policy specifics? Now, the subliminal message behind a set design… THAT’S something I can sink my teeth into.
I greatly look forward to McNovocain’s acceptance speech and the quality and American-ness of his set design. Hell, maybe he’ll just do it at the local Cracker Barrel. That should be American looking enough and plenty big enough for all his supporters.
I don’t even know why you’re arguing wit hthe McTroll retards. The world is falling apart, the economy is in shambles, 80% of the country despises the direction the country is going in. All of that, and these morons think someone is going to give a flying fuck about some greek columns?
No wonder these idiots are getting their asses kicked. If this is the best fake outrage they can come up with, they best get used to saying ‘ President Obama”.
So Barack puts himself on par with Lincoln, Jefferson, and the Constitution itself
As opposed to a current president and his sidekick who seem to think they are above the law and beyond the constitution.
Oh Quaker! I was responding to somebody whining about people talking about a lack of substantive issues.
A. McCain’s celebrity ad: Ran for one day. That’s where the McCain camp left it. Left reacts: “RACIST!”, “That’s not fair!”
B. The “houses” issue. Multiple ads created about it. Media blitz. Mentioned in speeches. Biden cracks wise about it. Buttons created. The left riding the issue like a two bit prostitute saying, “We’re giving you a taste of your own medicine! So there!”
C. Obama making like a stadium rock star. Gets poked fun at. Left reacts: “That’s not fair! Talk about the substantive issues!”
See the pattern?
Let’s see where the selective outrage strikes next, shall we?
Shorter Jay: “I’m rubber, you’re glue.”
Let’s translate that back into English from the original Crazy:
A: Obama draws big crowds. McCain pouts about it.
B. McCain (after weeks of insinuating that Obama is “elitist”) says something really tone deaf about his own wealth. The Obama folks “poke fun” as you like to put it. McCain pouts about it and reminds everybody that he was a POW.
C. Obama draws another gigantic, enthusiastic crowd and McCain’s supporters make fun of…the stage!
U. Gots. Nuthin’.
Oh, and by the way…how does a two bit prostitute ride an issue?
82 comments on this.
Sensitive much lefties? Even the most ardent of you can recognize how ridiculous the set is. It doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things, but does point out how tone deaf The Obama and his Acolytes are
To quote Shakespeare:
“Me thinks thou dost protest too much….”
“82 comments on this”
Of which 25 are from Republicans or Republiclones.
Not bad for a Democratic blog.
82 comments on this.
Since you took the time to count, maybe you could tell us how many of the 82 were posted by monkeys who could only say, “Columns!! Nyah!! Nyah!!”
Even the most ardent of you can recognize how ridiculous the set is.
Right. Because it has columns…and that means…something!
It doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things,
That’s all I been sayin’ all day. Yet these monkeys (present company included) just won’t go ‘way.
“but does point out how tone deaf The Obama and his Acolytes are”
Still wrong. That’s what you and the rest of the simian mob want to pretend it means. Instead, you had it right at “doesn’t matter much…”
Let’s take it back to reality. Unfortunately, The One in this case makes his supporters believe The Matrix is real.
A. McCain says that Obama’s popularity is based on a celebrity like status and not because of any real accomplishments. Obama and the bots cry “RACISM!”
B. McCain and supporters call ‘elitism’ on Barack because a guy with a total of 143 days of service in the Senate thinks he knows better than anybody else what is best for the country and wants to run for President. Bots respond that’s code for “uppity” and call “RACISM!” Bots and Obama respond with a silly class warfare based ad and claim they will use that one all the way to election day.
C. Obama “draws” a huge crowd by telling people who want to attend they have to work on the campaign and then of course, there are the luxury suites and boxes where those rich and corporate donors the Democrats claim don’t exist in their party will sit. McCain et al draw attention once again to Obama relying on celebrity status and Bots cry foul. Again. Once again to implying racism.
I can go all day dude.
I’m sure you can, Jay. It’s pathetic, but I’m sure you can repeat your mantra from now until doomsday.
Sorry Bruce, but all the yelping on your side is distraction that takes away from the fact your party nominated an empty suit as their nominee. He has NO record to run on. NO experience. NO accomplishments to speak of in public office. He’s got NOTHING.
The spittle and popping veins that comes Obama supporters over ANY criticism, whether it is trite (Greek columns) or true (no experience) is just a little too much protesting. Why is that?
BTW, care to answer why Condi Rice is the “worst Secretary of State in the last 50 years” as you claimed earlier?
Check the thread I posted it in. I get mixed up. This is fun!
Let’s take it back to reality. Unfortunately, The One in this case makes his supporters believe The Matrix is real.
You want reality? The Zero reminds everyone that he was a POW (but he really doesn’t like to talk about it).
A. McCain says that Obama’s popularity is based on a celebrity like status and not because of any real accomplishments. Obama and the bots cry “RACISM!”
“Obama and the bots”? I don’t think so. Yeah, some bloggers went off on a comparision to other slimey Republican candidate ads, but I actually thought they were off base on that. “Celebrity like status”? Some of us refer to that as “charisma” or “personal magnetism.” The Zero wishes he had some.
B. McCain and supporters call ‘elitism’ on Barack because a guy with a total of 143 days of service in the Senate thinks he knows better than anybody else what is best for the country and wants to run for President.
But not The Zero. He doesn’t even pretent to think he knows what’s best for the country. That’s why he’s just adding a rousing “me too” for the Bush administration policies.
Bots respond that’s code for “uppity” and call “RACISM!” Bots and Obama respond with a silly class warfare based ad and claim they will use that one all the way to election day.
Let’s see. WWJW? (What Would Jay Write?) I know: please name a single person that has said calling Obama “elitist” is racist.
C. Obama “draws” a huge crowd by telling people who want to attend they have to work on the campaign
Uh, no. That’s wrong. I live right here in Denver and nobody has ever said that.
and then of course, there are the luxury suites and boxes where those rich and corporate donors the Democrats claim don’t exist
Give me the name of one person…bla, bla, bla
McCain et al draw attention once again to Obama relying on celebrity status and Bots cry foul. Again. Once again to implying racism.
No, they’re saying that The columns! The columns! He thinks he’s a Greek god! And nobody (yet) has implied racism. You only just predicted that about an hour ago. You already find one?
I can go all day dude.
Bring it, Sparky. I say you can’t go three rounds without going to name-calling.
Oh and celebrity status?
One candidate was on Leno this week. One candidate has been on Leno more times than Paris or Britney. One candidate starred in a raunchy-humor Hollywood movie.
Who’s the celebrity?
“Celebrity like status”? Some of us refer to that as “charisma” or “personal magnetism.” The Zero wishes he had some.
That’s terrific. If Obama were running for a game show host that would be great. Unfortunately, his “charASma” (old reference to a David Lee Roth video) gets in the way of things like, oh…calling upon the UN Security Council to pass a resolution to call for an end to the violence in Georgia. When Russia has veto power on the UNSC.
That’s why he’s just adding a rousing “me too” for the Bush administration policies.
At least you have the talking points down.
Let’s see. WWJW? (What Would Jay Write?) I know: please name a single person that has said calling Obama “elitist” is racist.
Here’s one. Took about ten seconds to find it. Next.
And nobody (yet) has implied racism.
Sure they have. Right here in this thread. August and EL with their “uppity” comments which is short for “uppity nigger.”
Bring it, Sparky. I say you can’t go three rounds without going to name-calling.
Not.
“See the pattern?”
Yeah, Jay. You will always, consistently go to the ends of the earth to avoid criticizing Republicans for using the same tactics you blast Democrats for using.
Somehow or other in your book, the Republicans always do it with just a little less polish, or push it a little less hard, or have no real influence anyway, or didn’t really mean it in the first place, so they fall beneath your otherwise unyielding judgment on the ills of politics and politicians, leaving, of course, only democrats to come in for your withering scorn.
It’s how you respond to every thing.
Fafaroo, when on this blog have you EVER criticized Democrats for anything? You act like the comment section scold, berating people because they “avoid criticizing Republicans for the same tactics you blast Democrats for using” but your criticism of anything Democrats have done is as visible as the dark side of the moon.
So in short: Put up or shut up.
“He has NO record to run on. NO experience. NO accomplishments to speak of in public office. He’s got NOTHING.”
Whenever conservatives attack Obama for his “lack of experience” I am reminded that none of them complained, except perhaps John McCain, gave a shit about the severe paucity of Bush’s experience either in government or as a human being. Indeed, Bush’s lack of experience in politics and Washington, let alone on the foreign policy stage, were championed as assets. He was “outside the beltway” and so hadn’t been corrupted by years of political cynicism. We were told that Bush didn’t need experience because all one needed was integrity and honesty to make the right calls. And, don’t worry, if Bush lacked experience, he had an experience team behind him, headed by Dick Cheney.
I think Obama has plenty of experience to lead this country – he definitely has a hell of a lot more than Bush did in 2000. You can go on and on about how Bush isn’t running for president in 2008 or how 9-11 changed everything but all it really comes down to is this: Every campaign, conservatives adapt their “core principles” to suit whatever they perceive as the most politically expedient avenue of attack. They don’t really give a shit about experience. If they did, they never would have run Bush in 2000.
Oliver, with you and then some. The White House, the Capitol(ium) Building and the U.S. Supreme Court building also use Greek and/or Roman Revival elements prominently.
Of course, if he made it look like a West Virginia outhouse, that would be pandering. If he made it look like a living room, it would be condescending and “elitist” [WTF]. If he made it look like a wingnut blogger’s workspace, Mom’s apron, the cheap porn and endless Cheetos wrappers might have offended somebody.
If he made it look like anything, any wingnut who had not killed himself out of sheer shame would perhaps bleat something like a sheep. Frankly, whoever gets elected will be photographed many times in front of Roman/Greek columns. So this makes sense. McCain should do likewise, if he is smart, just like Bush did in 2004 as noted.
a shit about the severe paucity of Bush’s experience either in government or as a human being.
He was Governor of one of the largest states in the union for 6 years before running for President. And WTF with the “as a human being.” Can you write anything dumber?
I think Obama has plenty of experience to lead this country – he definitely has a hell of a lot more than Bush did in 2000.
No, he does not.
You’re now making stuff up so please stop.
“The spittle and popping veins that comes Obama supporters over ANY criticism, whether it is trite (Greek columns) or true (no experience) is just a little too much protesting. Why is that?”
And yet conservatives lampooning the stage set for Obama isn’t a little too much childishness? Oh right, when conservatives debase the process in such a way, it’s all just harmless, amateur hour fun that we can all get a kick out of. To complain about it is to reveal yourself a humorless shill. I mean, it’l only last a couple of days, they don’t really mean it. They’re just playing around. They certainly aren’t as horribly calculating and manipulative as the Democrats, who are really the ones destroying political discourse in this country by pointing out that McCain doesn’t know how many houses he has. I mean that isn’t funny. It’s the worst sort of class warfare and elitism!
Sheesh.
Shorter Fafaroo: “Jay! You need to criticize the Republicans!!”
Unfortunately, his “charASma” (old reference to a David Lee Roth video) gets in the way of things like, oh…calling upon the UN Security Council to pass a resolution to call for an end to the violence in Georgia. When Russia has veto power on the UNSC.
Maybe charASma means the opposite of charisma? I don’t know. I always thought DLR sucked ass. Anyway, charisma would get in the way how? It would probably be a lot more useful than stamping one’s little $500 loafers and demanding that the Russians stop it! Stop it right now!
Let’s see. WWJW? (What Would Jay Write?) I know: please name a single person that has said calling Obama “elitist” is racist.
Here’s one. Took about ten seconds to find it. Next.
Hmm. Let’s see. WWJW now? Got it!
That’s entirely different. You said “Bots responded…” A columnist in a music magazine doesn’t count because…well, he doesn’t! And show me where he says he’s a “Bot”!
At least you have the talking points down.
Oh no! Not the “Talking Points” defense. Your kung fu is too powerful! Of couse you’ll be able to give us the particulars on where Mr. McCain’s agenda departs from the Bush administration’s. Won’t you?
Maybe charASma means the opposite of charisma? I don’t know. I always thought DLR sucked ass.
Nah. There was just some video where people were talking to him and some fan was saying, “Dave, you’ve got CHARASMA!” instead of ‘charisma.’ I have no idea what made me remember that.
As for the link, I showed you right where somebody equated “elitism” with racism. Yet you’re hung up on me telling O-Dub to get a grip over accusing people of saying Barack’s choice of stage setup of being “unamerican”?
The mind boggles.
As for Bush, when was McCain pushing for a troop increase in Iraq? And I seem to have lost the link showing Bush and McCain are on the same page with regard to our buddy Putin. And the one on government spending. And campaign finance reform. And stem cell research. And immigration. They must exist as Bush and McCain are exactly the same!!
Duros Hussein 62 may be right about that Cracker Barrel.
Did anyone notice the two Toyotas in the handicapped spots.
That’s traditional American right there.
Maybe we’ll see that next week.
As for the link, I showed you right where somebody equated “elitism” with racism.
And I followed my new credo: WWJW? “Somebody” is not the same as a “Bot.” You said “Bots” responded with charges of racisim, but you haven’t proven that these so-called Bots exist or that Vibe Magazine employs any of them.
Yet you’re hung up on me telling O-Dub to get a grip over accusing people of saying Barack’s choice of stage setup of being “unamerican”?
I am? I thought all this devolved from gravypan’s question and Bruce Henry’s reply.
This is all so strange. I live abroad now, and I just can’t believe something as silly as this would make “news.” Then I remind myself, oh, that’s right — the “librul” MSM is actually a puppet for any silly brain-fart a wing-nut blogger has on a given day, and therefore this column bullshit must be “SERIOUS BIZNESS.”
For fuck’s sake, George Bush gave what was effectively a campaign speech on a freakin’ aircraft carrier, and the press had nothing but hard-ons for him when he did so.
Give ‘em hell tonight Barry. I know you will, and you’ll make me and the rest of my fellow Americans who care about the future of our country proud to call you our next president. McCain can’t attack you on substance, so he stoops to this stuff. Might as well make Bob Dole his running mate.
“Shorter Fafaroo: ‘Jay! You need to criticize the Republicans!!’”
Jay, since I know it’s impossible for you to actually apply the same standards to Republicans that you apply to Democrats, I’d settle for you just shutting the fuck up entirely. Especially, if you plan to continue with your main, if not your sole, purpose for commenting on Oliver’s blog is to rail against liberal hypocrisy. It’s kind of like, you know, hypocritical.
ay, since I know it’s impossible for you to actually apply the same standards to Republicans that you apply to Democrats
Actually, Oliver can attest to the fact that I’ve been critical of Republicans during my years of commenting here.
Like I said however, you act the Comment Section Scold, but the fact is, when have you been critical of Democrats while posting comments here? When have you ever applied the same standards to Democrats that you do Republicans. When?
If your intention is to do nothing but play the scold, then be my guest. It’s boring, but apparently you enjoy it.
I love these 19th Century retorts! “Play the scold”, “pray tell”, you “dolt”! Whattaya, William Jennings Bryan?
“It’s boring, but apparently you enjoy it.”
What is it with conservatives and projection? You’re first comment in this thread ends: “Give it a rest ok?” Give what a rest? Oh yeah, Oliver used the phrase “un-American” instead of “not traditionally American” in describing what conservatives think of Obama’s stage set.
If that isn’t a world class moronic scold, I don’t what is.
Of course, now that we’ve all seen the stage set and know it looked nothing like a “greek temple” can we expect you to now scold all those conservatives who made such a ridiculously big deal out of it.
And, Jay, I don’t have a problem criticizing Democrats when Democrats do stupid things. But I also don’t go around pretending I’m some how above the political fray because of my “principles.” That’s your attitude in a nutshell.
Oh yeah, Oliver used the phrase “un-American” instead of “not traditionally American” in describing what conservatives think of Obama’s stage set.
Conservatives didn’t say that either! I mean, you guys are like the kid from The Sixth Sense with the crap you see.
Of course, now that we’ve all seen the stage set and know it looked nothing like a “greek temple” can we expect you to now scold all those conservatives who made such a ridiculously big deal out of it.
Guess what jackass? I already thought they DID make a big deal out of it. It didn’t matter if he gave his speech with some columns in the background or the latest issue of Playboy. It’s what he said that was important to me.
And, Jay, I don’t have a problem criticizing Democrats when Democrats do stupid things.
I’m sure you don’t. The fact is, you NEVER HAVE and you run around telling everybody else what bad little boys they are. You’re like the kid who gets picked to be class monitor and happily tattles on everybody else when the teacher comes back.
But I also don’t go around pretending I’m some how above the political fray because of my “principles.” That’s your attitude in a nutshell.
Please. I never pretend to be above the political fray. My ideology is pretty wide open and I will call out conservatives when they deserve to be called out.
The first time I see you criticize a Democrat will be the first time.
For example, the other day you couldn’t admit that our elected officials should be held to a higher standard with regard to their language than talk show hosts and pundits because doing so just MIGHT reflect poorly on some Democratic politicians who have compared Republicans to Nazis.
Jay’s just upset because now he has to act like
Bob Dole’sJohn McCain’s nomination at the RNC is going to even marginally compare to Obama’s.“For example, the other day you couldn’t admit that our elected officials should be held to a higher standard with regard to their language than talk show hosts and pundits because doing so just MIGHT reflect poorly on some Democratic politicians who have compared Republicans to Nazis.”
Yeah, that’s because I said politicians and radio talk show hosts should be held to the same standards when it comes to their public discourse. You attacked Byrd but cut Rush Limbaugh slack because, you know, he doesn’t have any influence or anything. You wanna hold Byrd to a high standard of speech, fine. Do the same for Limbaugh and Hannity and other hacks. If you can’t do that, just shut the fuck up about it.
Interestingly, you repeated the same hackneyed move in this very thread: Well, McCain only ran that celebrity for a day and left it at that (as if the ad didn’t have any impact at all on how the MSM and the right wing blogosphere have been characterizing Obama ever since) so McCain clearly isn’t as bad as Obama and the Democrats who exploited poor John McCain’s houses gaffe for like, you know, two days.
I’ll also just note that you are leaving out another part of that conversation, the part about John McCain calling the New York Republican Party and Bush supporters in 2000 a bunch of Stalinists. I wonder why you left that part out and focused, yet again, on the impropriety of Democrats?
“Jay’s just upset because …”
Jay’s upset because he’s the king of OW troll scolds and he’s getting called on it. Jay, “Give it a rest ok?”
He has NO record to run on. NO experience. NO accomplishments to speak of in public office. He’s got NOTHING.
Putting aside that that’s all bullshit, he does have one thing that the Republican nominee doesn’t seem to have: A plan to turn this ship around and a way to pay for it all.
What do you got? A rich POW with a pocketful of lobbyists.
He was Governor of one of the largest states in the union for 6 years before running for President.
and practically ran it into the ground.
And I seem to have lost the link showing Bush and McCain are on the same page with regard to our buddy Putin. And the one on government spending. And campaign finance reform. And stem cell research. And immigration. They must exist as Bush and McCain are exactly the same!!
Well, what day is it?
the other day you couldn’t admit that our elected officials should be held to a higher standard with regard to their language
Oaky, I’ll admit it. George W. Bush should speak English, and use complete sentences.
Making sense? Too high a standard. I’ll let him slide on that one.
Jay at 6:48 –
Jay at 11:19 –
He never disappoints.
and practically ran it into the ground.
Well, to be fair, it probably would’ve done that on its own anyhow.
He was Governor of one of the largest states in the union for 6 years before running for President.
No, he does not.
Obama has had infinitely more experience in national politics than Bush. Deal with it. Also, name one accomplishment Bush made while governor (besides killing those retarded people).
Please, Jay. 6 of the last 7 presidential election have been decided by the candidates’ charisma.
Unfortunately, his “charASma” (old reference to a David Lee Roth video) gets in the way of things like, oh…calling upon the UN Security Council to pass a resolution to call for an end to the violence in Georgia. When Russia has veto power on the UNSC.
I heard on NPR this morning that he took the time to speak with an envoy from Georgia last night before the speech. The envoy said he was impressed and that if he were Barack, he wouldn’t have talked to him.
You Eeyores need to seriously think about shutting your cake holes for a while. It’s embarrassing.
He never disappoints.
Oh so you’re Fafaroo now? I didn’t know.
Yeah, that’s because I said politicians and radio talk show hosts should be held to the same standards when it comes to their public discourse.
Uh, you repeated what I said. I know this is your position and its dumb.
You attacked Byrd but cut Rush Limbaugh slack
Another Fafaroo lie. You see Quaker, THIS is why I call people like Fafaroo jackasses. Because they couldn’t debate honestly if their lives depended upon it.
Interestingly, you repeated the same hackneyed move in this very thread: Well, McCain only ran that celebrity for a day and left it at that (as if the ad didn’t have any impact at all on how the MSM and the right wing blogosphere have been characterizing Obama ever since) so McCain clearly isn’t as bad as Obama
Here we go with the “as bad” nonsense. It would be nice if just for once, you could write things using a little bit of intellectual honesty. Neither of the ads were “bad.” I compared in the context of who is trying to get more political mileage out of them? Is that even up for a discussion? Cripes. LEARN. TO. READ. FOR. CONTENT. PLEASE.
I’ll also just note that you are leaving out another part of that conversation, the part about John McCain calling the New York Republican Party and Bush supporters in 2000 a bunch of Stalinists. I wonder why you left that part out and focused, yet again, on the impropriety of Democrats?
I didn’t leave that out because I already gave my view on it. I’m talking about you being nothing but a suck-ass for Democrats. That’s what you are dude. Sorry.
WWJW?
You’re so right, Jay. You didn’t call me names. You called someone else names. So my charge that you “can’t go three rounds without going to name-calling” is way, waaaaay off base.
I bow to the master!
It depends on your definition of what “name-calling” is, says Jay.
Here I was thinking about how the election should be about the war, the economy, the hostility to women’s rights, and the need to find alternatives to oil and oil companies.
Now I see the important issue: the Democratic convention’s backdrop scenery. I got it. Columns are unamerican. Therefore vote for….
… wait a minute. I wouldn’t have fallen for this arrant nonsese as a kid. Much less as a concerned citizen suffering from 8 years of George Bush But,hey. Republicans, keep pushing the temple thing with all your energy. It could work!
