Oh By The Way

The Democratic party just officially nominated a black man to be its nominee. I thought that was worth noting.

Oh don’t worry, the Republican Noise Machine, right down to the pissant trolls who frequent this site, will make note of that. Not directly, mind you, but in a Lee Atwater-approved manner. Done and done.

  2. Only until he passes away, Oliver. Then they all start claiming he was a Republican.

When I was a college student, picketers across the street from my rooming house were trying to get black applicants considered for checkout clerks in a supermarket!

    Checkout clerks.

This was forty-two years ago, in California.

I can understand why some of the conventioneers were crying tonight.

“Born often under another sky, placed in the middle of an always moving scene, himself driven by the irresistible torrent which draws all about him, the American has no time to tie himself to anything, he grows accustomed only to change, and ends by regarding it as the natural state of man. He feels the need of it, more he loves it; for the instability; instead of meaning disaster to him, seems to give birth only to miracles all about him.”

    - Alexis de Tocqueville (French Historian and Political scientist. 1805-1859)

The “instability” of America and its thirst for an ever-swinging pendulum towards the left and right is our greatest strength. Though we may frequently disagree, remember that despite our convenient media tags – Republican, Democrat, Liberal, Conservative – we are all children of the same Mother. I look forward to a positive change after this disaster of an Administration.

Full disclosure, I am supporting McCain. But I think Sen. Obama will/would be a fantastic President. Once the battle ends, let us bend our swords to plowshares for 4 more (ok, 3.2) years and rebuild our Country, our Reputation, and most importantly, our shared love of this, our most beloved Home.

    - A Republican willing to PDA a Democrat.

I remember, at age 10, watching Julian Bond having his name put in for VP in 1968 in Chicago. He was only 28, so it was only symbolic, but it was a big symbol.

It’s good to have lived to see the other end of it.

    Pretty farking awesome.

    But…

It is kinda like winning the conference title. Four more quarters ’till he goes all Jackie Robinson up in there.

  8. Lon Cohen says:

’bout time. Now let’s see some change, dag nab it.

  9. Randy Brown says:

    CA-aan…you…DIG IT?!

If only my mom, who passed in December, had been able to see all this. Somehow, though, I think she can.

  10. Colorado Dave says:

He is the son of a single working mother.

    His father was an immigrant.

He moved to a working class neighborhood of America’s most working class city — Chicago.

He depended on loans and scholarships for college.

He worked as a community organizer.

She group up on the south-side of Chicago.

    She went to public schools.

She depended on loans and scholarships for college.

They are America. They are the very image of America.

They are the American Dream that anyone, rich or poor, black or white, can grow up to be President.

And yet some will try to portray Obama as elitist.

My dad was an E-9. We lived in base housing. Fourplexes with ratty carports. I do not think that in the entire time I was growing up I was ever in a house in officers’ country. Heck they didn’t even like us NCO kids playing on their side of the street.

Elitist, do you want to know who is an elitist?

The son of an Admiral. Now that is rarefied air.

And heads exploded all over the nation… come to think of it, can someone explain to me what is up w/ Larry Johnson and his collection of whackos? Is mental illness, jealousy, bigotry – what???

While you’re at it, what’s up w/ the PUMA holdouts as well?

    Randy Brown,

    I can dig it.

“If only my mom, who passed in December, had been able to see all this. Somehow, though, I think she can.”

I’ve been thinking the same thing about my mom and dad. My mom was a passionate Democrat and dedicated to social justice (when I read about Obama’s mother, I noticed so many similarities to my own mother).

My father, on the other hand, was a Republican (and divorced from my mother by the way). My dad was a bit of a racist (if there is a racism index). Actually, not so much a bit. He used to chide us for watching Different Strokes… “watching the tv show about the negro babies?” I also witnessed him say worse than the word “negro” (yet he would still flirt with attractive black stewardesses, go figure). He also voiced his severe disapproval at the notion that I could ever date a black man. Despite all of this, my father was actually a very good man. He was just seriously misguided. I love my father with all of my heart and miss him like crazy. I get what Obama is talking about when he talks about the intricacies of racism.

Funny thing is, in addition to us now having a African American nominee for POTUS who all of his daughters are ardently supporting, my late father now has an African grandson. My sister and her husband recently adopted a happy and beautiful little boy from Ethiopia. We love and cherish him like nothing else.

So, yes, times are a changing.

    God bless America.

  14. Changey McHoperson says:

He is going to be the BESTEST 1/2 Black President in HISTORY!!!

  15. Changey McHoperson says:

Also, do you think he will build a hut on the south lawn for his brother George? That would be nice of the Messiah.

  16. SpiderJ says:

Why do you anti-Obama folks keep calling him the Messiah? Haven’t you gotten the memos that tell you he’s actually the anti-Christ?

  17. Bruce Henry says:

You can move into the hut, Changey. Might be a nice change from your single-wide off’n the frontage road. Don’t forget to empty the spittoons!

  18. Vanessa says:

    Changey McHoperson, or Crusty McBitterson???

    :O

Campaign season is a funny time.

  19. Changey McHoperson says:

    Bruce and Vanessa, touche’

It’s a doublewide, and me and the missus are mighty proud

The Democratic party just officially nominated a man solely because of the color of his skin to be its nominee.

  21. SpiderJ says:

Even if that were true, people in glass houses, etcetera, etcetera.

  22. Parthenon says:

The Democratic party just officially nominated a man solely because of the color of his skin to be its nominee.

No, they nominated a man whose program they believed in the most, and who also happens to be black. I could also say “The Republican party next week will officially nominate a man solely because he was a POW,” and it would be about as true.

  23. Quaker in a Basement says:

The Democratic party just officially nominated a man solely because of the color of his skin to be its nominee.

What a coincidence! So did the Republicans!

  24. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Also, do you think he will build a hut on the south lawn for his brother George? That would be nice of the Messiah.

Certainly not! He’ll be in charge of FEMA.

  25. Randy Brown says:

“Also, do you think he will build a hut on the south lawn for his brother George? That would be nice of the Messiah.”

    Fling.

    Whirr.

    SPLAT!

Kiss mine too, and enjoy cleaning yourself up.

BTW, don’t all of you know that Sun Myung Moon is the one and true Messiah (TM)?

  26. Jay says:

Randy has his little macro down pat. How cute.
