James Carville

1:21 am EST August 26th, 2008 | Democrats | 24 Comments

I concede that I’ve only heard about it second hand, but apparently James Carville bitched and moaned on CNN about the convention tonight because I guess they didn’t go after McCain enough. My guess is that is coming, especially with Sen. Clinton and Sen. Biden. But even if that’s not so, can someone tell me the last time James Carville did something that worked politically in America that didn’t have the name Bill Clinton attached to it?

He reminds me of John Madden, a former expert who has been passed by by the game. The major difference is he does not have the good feelings left over by the Madden Cruiser, Turducken, or the Bam! Pow! Telestrator.

James Carville is a lot like Pat Buchanan – a washed-up has been trying to keep himself relevant in a political discourse that has passed him by some years ago.

    James,

The age of beepers, and cassette tapes is over. This is the age of Blue-Ray. Do us all a favor, and go home.

    Thanks,

    America

  2. Jaim says:

I dunno. I’d still listen to Madden’s advice when it comes to football, although he wouldn’t be the _only_ voice I’d want to hear.

Carville? Yeah. Clinton. “New Democrat” and “Third Way” strategy. I was happy to have a Democratic POTUS 92-2000, but arguably it also meant a consoliation of Republican Congressional power up until November 2006, and two botched campaigns in 2000 and 2004 due to over-”triangulation.”

Begala. Shrum. Catfish whatever-his-name-is. They have to know, in their heart of hearts, that nobody wants them around any more. Because they’re of no use. That’s gotta hurt. But that’s progress for ya’.

  3. CrazyRidesRockets says:

This is one of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t type situations. If they had started out, “Attack, attack, attack,” the media would be kvetching this morning about the Dems being too negative, running against something and for nothing.

I’ll wait to see what happens. I, too, want them to go after McCain/Bush. And I think they will. But the emotional tenor of last night was all wrong for it. Last night was a night to honor Teddy and introduce the Obama family to the nation, which Michelle could not have done better.

What do you want to bet that Carville’s criticism would be a lot more muted if Clinton were the nominee?

  4. juhar says:

Carville is so irrelevant. Since his “CROSSFIRE” Days and the novelty of the commericialization of him and his wife as on-camera political opposites in their “he said she said” bit, he has only relied on his relationship with the Clinton.

Carville is only an insider to the Clinton camp and we all know what’s going on there – a lot of pouting and disbelief that they lost it. The Clintons and their great strategist Carville lost.
They marginalized Obama’s campaign and did even think of him as a threat and when they realized that he had an unsurmountable lead they couldn’t catch up even when they tried to destroy Obama’s qualifications and character. Carville is just pissed.

Instead of talking about Carville, the conversation should be about Michelle Obama’s amazing speech.

  5. riffle says:

While not entirely true, one can make a pretty persuasive argument that Ross Perot was way more influential in getting a Democrat elected in 1992 than was the candidate (Clinton) or his consultants (Begala, Carville, and Stephanopolous).

No Perot, no Clinton era in all likelihood.

Also, if Carville wants to do something for democrats he should denounce rather than support Mary Matalin, who spews some pretty vile lies about Democrats (including publishing Corsi’s smear job). Matalin is probably hurting Obama way more than Carville could ever help him. But Carville’s concern-trolling is no help either.

I used to think Carville was a family man and gave him a pass on the Matalin stuff– but one has to believe that he is leaving at least part of the moral instruction of his children to a woman who casts septic lies and smears about decent honorable men. His kids are learning their ethics from that smear-artist.

  6. Repack Rider says:

I can’t handle looking at him long enough to hear what he has to say.

This guy is either terminally ill, or he has an eating disorder. In any event, the Nazi death-camp look is SO 1945.

Michelle Obama, on the other hand, put a belt-high fastball into the cheap seats.

  7. Duros Hussein 62 says:

When Novak walked out on him (as precious as that was) is when Carville jumped the shark.

That’s it, buddy, your 15 minutes are up.

  8. James E. Powell says:

I’m not fan of Carville, but I will take a somewhat contrary view on his comments, taken together with what I heard Begala and some others say about attacking McCain.

First, it was obviously not appropriate for Kennedy or Michelle Obama to attack McCain on opening night. There were other things that needed to be done. And the source of an attack is often just as important as the attack itself.

Second, demands for more attacks, coming from several media-approved sources, and Carville is definitely media-approved, can lay a foundation for when the attacks actually come.

A suggestion: if the Big Dog wants to regain the respect and admiration among Democrats that he lost during the primaries, he will lead the attack on the Republicans and McCain. He has the speaking chops to pull it off.

Finally, as much as we would all love to hear non-stop shredding of Bush, McCain and Republicans, that is not necessarily what will work best for Obama. When the Republicans do it, they are speaking to their angry, ignorant and bigoted base voters. Those people respond to diatribes. The voters that Obama needs, and will likely get, do not respond to that kind of thing.

This doesn’t mean lay down and take it Kerry style, and there is no sign that Obama will do that. But it does mean that one does not rally the troops with anger.

  9. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Well said, couldn’t agree more. And one word of warning to the punditocracy: Don’t underestimate Obama.

I’m getting really tired of seeing posts all over Huffpo about “What Obama should do” or what Obama should have done.”
STFU, already. The guy knows what he’s doing.

  10. Duros Hussein 62:
I realized it was Tucker Carlson and Begala when Jon Stewart effectively ended Crossfire.

  11. Duros Hussein 62 says:

    Absolutely, Calvin.

  12. anotherbozo says:

Jaim: Don’t dump on Begala. He’s relevant, if only for this:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-begala/please-democrats-attack_b_121410.html

He couldn’t be more right IMHO.

  13. I’m no fan of Carville, but I think Carville is frustrated because his candidate Hillary is now in a position to have to attack McCain. She’s obligated to do so because of how hard she hammered Obama. The only way to undo some of that damage is to dish out even worse to McCain. So that means she not only didn’t win, but she’s forced to the dirty work while Carville has to sit by and watch Michelle Obama deliver the speech of a lifetime and she gets to stay above the fray. Carville is also aware that Ted Kennedy and Hillary are competing for the lead on health care reform in January, and his legend grew to even more enormous proportions on Monday. Bad night for Carville and the Clintons.

  14. Going after McCain? I got the impression from the PUMA’s that the whole point of convening in Denver was to go after Obama. (heck- they’re SUPPORTING McCain)

  15. Jay says:

Ok, I have to admit that I am out of the loop on this one. What is PUMA anyway?

  16. ed says:

Ok, I have to admit that I am out of the loop on this one. What is PUMA anyway?

It’s a group of Republicans pretending to be jilted Democratic Hillary voters who are promising to vote for McCain. In other words, real live trolls.

  17. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Party Unity My Ass. AKA WATB’s

Check out Carville’s choice of footwear from yesterday. It should give you a hint to where his allegiances lie.

  18. Parthenon says:

It should give you a hint to where his allegiances lie.

    Classic. What a prick.

  19. Duros Hussein 62 says:

They look pretty dang new, too. Meaning he got them just for the occasion. Plus his very stylish posture.

  20. Parthenon says:

If I’d just shelled out sixty bones for a little statement like that, I’d make sure everybody saw ‘em, too.

  21. Zython says:

The major difference is he does not have the good feelings left over by the Madden Cruiser, Turducken, or the Bam! Pow! Telestrator.

The other major difference is that James Carville doesn’t have a popular video game franchise named after him.

  22. Jaim says:

anotherbozo, thanks for the Begala link. That makes me think a little better of the guy.

  23. datadave says:

    Hey, Oliver,

You really fish well digging up crawfish like Carville. Just gets this reading going!!

Never could see how he’s doing the Democrats any good. Marrying that Mary Matalin Magdeline like she was a saint or something and then besmirching the public airwaves with the world’s ugliest couple bantering on Meet the Press has lowered Carville’s carnival act to a lower mud flat than any catfish could float. He’s down there with the Finless Browns floating out of a Louisiana shanty town’s sewage pipe.
