McCain’s Limp Response To His Housing Gaffe

The McCain campaign goes once again to the well of mccainaccusing Obama of being elitist for going on vacation in Hawaii. As we here at OliverWillis.com noted previously. That’s not a playground for the elite, it’s a normal family vacation that’s as American as apple pie. There’s a possibility this race could come down to which candidate is more elitist. I think the candidate with multiple homes, IMDB credits and a heiress wife (who lied about meeting Mother Teresa) is going to come out on the bad end of that versus the middle class guy who worked his way up in the world.

Just a guess.

Here’s what Sen. Obama had to say on the matter today:

“Now think about that – I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make five million dollars, and if you don’t’ know how many houses you have, then it’s not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong!”

“But if you’re like me and you’ve got one house – or you were like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don’t lose their home, you might have a different perspective.”

UPDATE: It gets even worse. McCain’s camp is defending the out of touch remark by saying McCain was a POW. That’s right, John McCain is an out of touch elitist who doesn’t understand economics but you can’t say that because he was a POW.

What bull. Reminds me of Rudy Giuliani blaming everything on 9/11. Oh, crap, shouldn’t give Lord McCain any ideas.

The proceeds will be split evenly between the commenter who came up with this line (not me) and the Obama campaign.

I’m voting for the guy who knows how many homes he owns

Amazing. Three separate articles on presidential candidates and houses, and not one mention of which candidate has a half-brother who lives in a shack.

But we know all about one candidate’s wife’s half-sister…

    Dear JayTea,

    Buy your bumper sticker now!
    :D

  4. John McCain has houses to spare, doesn’t he?

  5. michael says:

“not one mention of which candidate has a half-brother who lives in a shack”

Do we know McCain doesn’t have one? Does McCain know? Have we checked with his staff?

Oh Noes! Is it posssible that relatives can’t live the same life like Dixie Burd, Neil or Noelle Bush?

*All proceeds go to Ed (the guy who came up with the phrase and the Obama campaign*

Neither guy wins this one. Presidential candidates are almost always rich. Nothing new here.

Unless if you were hoping for Hillary to be the VP pick, it would seem odd this line of attack and then naming her and her $100 million bucks to be his running mate, along with her Tony Rezko ’slum lord’ comment to BHO, that will now be back in the news.

Dems aren’t good at these sorts of boxing matches. “First with the head and then with the heart’. Obama’s not using either one right now. Not with this one, anyhow.

  9. mike in dc says:

Jay, actually it’s two half-sisters plus a few grandkids.
I’m not aware that Obama was ever contacted by his half-brother for assistance, but I’m pretty sure he can get help from his family if he really wants it. It sounds like the guy was pretty ashamed to have sunk into that condition and didn’t want to bother his family about it.

Since Obama made less than 5 million last year, technically he’s middle-class under the McCain standard, isn’t he?

  10. KXB says:

Again, the only value of Rezko is the sound of his name – it sounds dirty. If the guy was named Arthur William Himminghsham – not quite the same sinister sound.

  11. jr says:

“infanticide!”-repubs distracting from McCain’s wife’s net worth being more than 2,000 times the per capita income in this country

  12. Jaim says:

I’m sympathetic to the argument that all politicians are wealthy elitists, but the difference in this campaign has been how desperate the Republican slur machine has been to paint Obama as a latte-swilling elitist. This is _crucial_ to their campaign in a way different than the typical “You’re an elitist, No, You’re a bigger elitist!” that we tend to hear.

By objective standards, this is big news. As others have mentioned, if McCain was telling the truth then he’s a bit senile. Sorry, but no amount of spin will convince people that it’s easy to forget how many freakin’ _houses_ you have. Then again, maybe he was lying in order to cover up his insanely huge personal fortune.

There’s no crime in being rich — it’s the American way. But to run a campaign as a “maverick” man of the people and not know or want to say how many houses you own? Either way, it’s sad and pathetic. So much for “straigh-talk.”

    Yeah, this stings.

  13. Jaim says:

Architectual Digest spread on one of the numerous McCain estates.

  14. ed says:

Hey Vanessa, go ahead and donate all proceeds to the campaign of The Guy Who Knows How Many Homes He Owns, aka The Guy Who Knows the Difference Between Sunni and Shia, aka The Guy Who Didn’t Cozy Up to the Truly Loathsome Jerry Fallwell. That guy.

But I’ll still get in touch. Is there a good way to fine you?

  15. ed says:

Also, it’s “houses,” not “homes” if you wants to get technical. Doesn’t really matter. Just sayin.

Are you trying to dig at Barack? ‘Cuz it ain’t working for you.

  17. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Rogers made sure to play the anti-intellectual card: “In terms of who’s an elitist, I think people have made a judgment that John McCain is not an arugula-eating, pointy headed professor-type based on his life story.”

    Stayin’ classy, I see.

  18. Vanessa Hussein says:

    Duros,

No, Ed isn’t taking a dig at Obama. He’s offering suggestions for new Cafe Press products, as in:

“I’m voting for the guy who knows the difference between Sunni and Shia”

    and

“I’m voting for the guy who didn’t cozy up to JerryFallwell”

And he’s saying that I should donate ALL of the proceeds to the Obama campaign.

    Ed,

Are you on facebook? I’m a friend of Oliver’s on facebook. I kinda don’t want to post my email address here.

  19. Vanessa Hussein says:

    P.S.

    Ed,

McCain has condos, not houses, that’s why I used the word “homes.”

  20. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Ah. Gotcha. There’s a whole cottage industry to be had.

  21. Duros Hussein 62 says:

“This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years — in prison,” spokesman Brian Rogers told the Washington Post.

    Oh, for the love of…WTF?

Dude, did he OWN that prison cell? Did his WIFE own that prison cell? Then STFU.

  22. ed says:

Ah, homes it is. That works just fine. I’ll find you on Teh Facebook. Anyhizzle, good show. Good show, indeed.

  23. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Can’t O-Dub subscribers get a promo discount? Since we were here at the birth of this Internet Tradition and all?

  24. Vanessa Hussein says:

    Duros,

I know you’re mostly joking, but … I can’t really control the price, except for not marking up the products at all (and then there’d be nothing to donate to the Obama campaign!). Cafe Press takes about 97% of the proceeds. The items are marked up by only $1 to $3.

    Obama ‘08!

  25. Duros Hussein 62 says:

I never mostly joke, Vanessa. :-)

  26. nan says:

Here we go again! Who cares how many houses a person has? Bet Kerry has a lot of houses and SUV’s. If Cindy wants to spend her money on property let her without being condemed! Is it wrong to inherit money or make money legally and then spend it? It helps the economy for pete’s sake! So many jealous people. Obama’s brother lives in a shack on 12.00 a year, anyone want to go after barak for not sending him 20 bucks! Ofcourse not for god’s sake he’s Black! Let Cindy have fun with her money, she has it all that includes the houses in a Trust for her kids. John doesn’t handle her money or her houses, he may not own even one! she handles all her finances, I think that is great! most married women just put their hand out for the check book or credit cards. If people have money, marry it, make it or inherit it some people just can’t get over it…
