John McCain: Make Less Than $5 Million/Year? Congratulations! You’re Not Rich.
So, we all know that John McCain with his multiple homes and marriages is far out of the mainstream, but who knew that he considers people who make just shy of $5 million a year part of the great unwashed? I guess that’s the side effect marrying into money and being a media darling produces.

So following a statement with “But seriously…” no longer counts as an indication that the preceding sentence was a joke? Or are you once again going to do a series of posts claiming the $5 million were McCains own words while snipping the qualifier that followed?
Was he qualifying that statement or his whole answer as a joke?
McCain: So I think if you’re just talking about income, how about $5 million. But seriously, I don’t think you can — I don’t think, seriously that — the point is that I’m trying to make here seriously — and I’m sure that comment will be distorted, but the point is — the point is — the point is that we want to keep people’s taxes low and increase revenues. And my friend, it was not taxes that mattered in America in the last several years. It was spending. Spending got completely out of control. We spent money in a way that mortgaged our kids futures. My friends, we spent $3 million of your money to study the DNA of bears in Montana. Now I don’t know if that was a paternity issue or a criminal issue, but the point is — but the point is it was $3 million of your money. It was your money.
Seems to me he spends some notable effort to make clear that the $5 million wasn’t a number he was serious about. And, having left that part out, OW has shown McCain to be correct when he said his comment would be distorted.
I’ve said it before and will no doubt again: There is plenty to take McCain to task for. Deliberately misrepresenting things like this is unnecessary, and counter-productive.
Henny Youngman he is not.
I am a single mom and have raised three sons, I will PRAY FOR THE DAY that I syould make HALF a million, much less 5 million and YET the country RUNS on the BACKS of people JUST LIKE ME…NOT on the backs othe RICH like John McCain….I have ABSOLUTE honor for what he did for this country as a soldier…but he is NOT the person he was THEN…he has LOST that person in the dollar signs…sorry, the rest of us didn’t marry into wealth, we are still struggling, and we DO NOT HAVE 7 houses, we are trying like hell to pay for our FIRST mortgage.
