Trying to be active in the face of an established party is a hard row to hoe, but it has to be done. At the end of the day, the party insiders would be happiest if all you did was act as a warm-body for phone banks and donate money.

The resistance is known as the "Iron Law of Institutions": these sclerotic party inner-circles are more concerned about their own power within the party than about the power of the party itself. It gets resolved when the party insiders realize which way the wind is blowing and line up behind the reformers to ensure that they stay relevant.

Four of the newcomers, including Palmer, have had their nominating petitions challenged at the Board of Elections and Ethics by rivals hoping to keep them off the ballot. ... "I did not even have a moment to relish that I was a candidate," said Palmer, whose petition was challenged by 77-year-old incumbent Horace Kreitzman. "I'm sensing some resistance and hesitation for people to embrace change."

You would think someone working for Obama would know that these sorts of things happen all the time.
