At the end of the day, the party insiders would be happiest if all you did was act as a warm-body for phone banks and donate money. The resistance is known as the "Iron Law of Institutions": these sclerotic party inner-circles are more concerned about their own power within the party than about the power of the party itself. It gets resolved when the party insiders realize which way the wind is blowing and line up behind the reformers to ensure that they stay relevant.
