More Hawaii Based Elitism

The Brady Bunch does Hawaii. Doesn’t Barack Obama realize that families with astroturf lawns are part of the global elite?

I don’t this Brady Bunch clip (which I’ve seen floating around) successfully makes the that a trip to Hawaii is not elitist. I actually think it makes the opposite point.

At the time this was filmed in the early 70s, the reason they went to Hawaii was for the ratings, and it was precisely because at that time, a Hawaiian vacation was pretty elitist. Even from the West Coast, it coast a ton of bucks for a family to get there.

In Southern California, in elementary school, jr. high, and high school, everyone was pretty envious of those families that went to Hawaii. It was a pretty amazing vacation.

The Brady Bunch was never a typical family. Dad was a professional (architect, right?) and the family had a full-time maid. Full-time maid? That’s pretty elitist (IMHO).

That said, it’s a pretty dumb and low attack on Obama, since that is where he grew up, and since that is where is grandmother still lives.

I just think the Brady Bunch comparison doesn’t reflect the history.

If Obama didn’t go to Hawaii once in awhile, the rightwing gasbags would criticize him for not respecting his family.

I always wondered; what does Carol do all day? Why would a stay at home housewife even need a live-in maid?

Why, to fill in the center square, of course.

D’OH! Of course. Not to mention exposition.

Still, could’a used Scamp just as easily.
