  1. j mccann says:

groups like the sierra club are why we are paying $4/gallon for gas and our energy prices are increasing.

the bind that they and democrats have us in with this is nothing short of criminal.

  2. ed says:

Yeah, why did the Sierra Club support the Iraq Invasion and corporate welfare for Big Oil. Shame on them!

  3. ed says:

Shorter j mccann: “What’s the difference between price and cost again, cuz I forgotten.”

  4. Quaker in a Basement says:

    mccann, you’re hallucinating again.

  5. j mccann says:

Environmental nutcases have and will do far more damage to this country than violent, islamic fascists.

This has been stated as fact.

  6. ed says:

This has been stated as fact.

Can’t argue with that. It has, truly, been stated as fact. Without a single citation. On a blog comment. By a weak-minded douche-bag. But it has been stated as fact.

  7. I'm a Hick says:

Angelina’s gonna leave Brad for me any day now.

This has been stated as fact.

  8. SaveFarris says:

Damn that Karl Rove! Now he’s running the Sierra Club!

If this election hinges on gas prices, John McCain (and the “Drill Now” crowd) win. Obama needs to change the subject … fast.

  9. william says:

“Obama needs to change the subject … fast.”

No he doesn’t. He’s got a great plan…just inflate your tires and get a tune up!

  10. Duros62 says:

This has been stated as fact.

Are we seeing the birth of a new Internet tradition, here?

  11. Quaker in a Basement says:

Environmental nutcases have and will do far more damage to this country than violent, islamic fascists.

Then why do we have troops in the Middle East? Wouldn’t we be better off to send them after those door-to-door solicitors for Greenpeace?

  12. Duros62 says:

If we burn down the rainforests in Oregon & Washington, they won’t have a place to hide.

  13. Enlightened Liberal says:

I am aware of all internet traditions. That is not one of them.

  14. j mccann says:

The amount of money being spent by americans on energy far outweighs what 9/11 cost us. And it’s the fault of democrats that are bought and paid for by radical environmentalists that will not let us do anything about the dilemna we’re in.

Thank you democrats. Thank you for stealing from the american people on behalf of the well-being of caribou and trees.

    Much appreciated.

  15. Southern Quaker says:

At least he’s stopped calling us all marxists.

mcann? Hello? Supply…demand? Any of this ringing a bell?

Americans use more energy than any other people on the planet. Developing countries are increasing their use of energy. But in your fever-muddled head it’s the environmentalists who are causing the problems?

How much less would we pay for a gallon of gas if all drilling restrictions were dropped today?

    Answer now, lunatic!

  17. ed says:

The amount of money being spent by americans on energy far outweighs what 9/11 cost us.

Awesome logic, per usual. Just think, j mccann, how much the discrepancy would be if only Bush had bothered to heed the August 6, 2001 PDB (and scores of other threats) instead of going bass fishing.

Drill now, drill everywhere. Build more refineries and nuclear power plants. Basically……use any and all energy sources available….which democrats don’t want us to do….because of….(gasp) caribou!

    Respond right now, marxist pigs.

And the price of a gallon of gas will go down by how much? You forgot to…

    Answer now, lunatic!

  20. Quaker in a Basement says:

    In today’s news:

“Record earnings for the world’s largest publicly traded oil company have become almost as predictable as the surge of gasoline prices at the pump in recent years, and for the second quarter income rose 14 percent, to $11.68 billion.

  21. SaveFarris says:

Well last week, the price of oil went down $20 merely on talk that we MIGHT drill more. Were we to actually do so, prices would subsequently continue to fall.

  22. I'm a Hick says:

Which seems to suggest that the price of oil is determined by more than the actual supply. Talk of a conflict in East Bumfuck next week could send it back up.

  23. j mccann says:

    In today’s news:

“Record earnings for the world’s largest publicly traded oil company have become almost as predictable as the surge of gasoline prices at the pump in recent years, and for the second quarter income rose 14 percent, to $11.68 billion.“

Quit driving, and I assure you they won’t make money off of you. Otherwise…..who cares how much money a business makes? Last time I checked, that was ACTUALLY the point of a business. And psssst…..since you are seemingly associating high oil prices with high profits….maybe (now shhhhhh, don’t tell anyone) their profits would drop too if we had more oil! Woooha! You should be happy with that idea, marxist pig!

    Gotta love childlike jealousy.

  24. william says:

    “Record earnings…to $11.68 billion”

You conveniently left out that Exxon-Mobil’s effective income tax rate increased to 49% versus 44% and that they paid more than $32 Billion in taxes.

    Evil Oil Companies!

  25. j mccann says:

    Yes william, I agree!

Oil companies, and heck, any business that makes money is eeeeeevil!!

    .sarcasm off.

you liberals are so f**king stupid.

Who gets mad at someone else for making money???? Seriously. That’s just stupid.

  26. I'm a Hick says:

I saw an interview with Mark White, the former governor of Texas, the other day. He said he’s all for increased drilling. The problem is, there aren’t currently any additional rigs to drill with.

  27. Jay says:

    Respond right now, marxist pigs.

You know McCann….I chastised Rheinhard yesterday for saying, “Answer now, fascists!” when he was in fact just playing off your hyperbole. I’ll repeat to you what I said to him. You’ll do a lot better getting people to discuss these issues with you without all of the “marxist” stuff.

Angelina’s gonna leave Brad for me any day now.

Are you going to be able to keep up? She wants like six more kids. Of course, as a wise man with the initials RD once said, “The best part about having kids is makin em!”

  28. Duros62 says:

Well last week, the price of oil went down $20 merely on talk that we MIGHT drill more.

Funny, i thought it was because we were all driving less because of the, you know, high cost of fuel.

  29. j mccann says:

    I call’em as I see them, jay.

  30. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Confused boys?

The world’s biggest oil company is selling all the oil they can…and they’re making record-breaking profits. What’s their incentive to drill for more oil?

  31. Quaker in a Basement says:

last week, the price of oil went down $20 merely on talk that we MIGHT drill more

Direct cause-and-effect, Farris? Baloney. I say it went down because traders are closing out their positions in advance of Bush leaving office.

    Hey, it’s just as likely.

  32. Sean D. Martin says:

Jay to jmccann: You’ll do a lot better getting people to discuss these issues with you without all of the “marxist” stuff.

There you go being wrong again, Jay. You seem to be under the impression that jmccann is interested in actually discussing issues.

  33. I'm a Hick says:

“Are you going to be able to keep up? She wants like six more kids. Of course, as a wise man with the initials RD once said, “The best part about having kids is makin em!” ”

    Sigh, 20 years ago, maybe.

  34. j mccann says:

    Confused boys?

“The world’s biggest oil company is selling all the oil they can…and they’re making record-breaking profits. What’s their incentive to drill for more oil?”

To make more money, as is the incentive in pretty much any business.

    Duh.

  35. Quaker in a Basement says:

To make more money, as is the incentive in pretty much any business.

Let’s try this again. They’re selling all they can. No customers going away empty. If there was more oil, they wouldn’t sell more without reducing the price!

Record sales, record profits = no incentive to produce more and bring the price down.

  36. Southern Quaker says:

QiB, you’ll have to forgive mccann. I’m fairly sure they don’t teach economics in the fourth grade.

  37. Zython says:

Quit driving, and I assure you they won’t make money off of you.

Well, you see, people have jobs, and lives. In certain cities, driving is the only way to get around. I know the only reason you care is because high gas prices are what’s preventing your mom from buying you the new Naruto video game, but for the grown-ups, this is a real issue.

If this election hinges on gas prices, John McCain (and the “Drill Now” crowd) win. Obama needs to change the subject … fast.

Why? We’ve had the Bush/Cheney energy policies in place for the last 8 years, and gas prices have done nothing but climb. And McCain plans to continue those same policies.

Otherwise…..who cares how much money a business makes?

When prices of a good with an inelastic demand are being artificially increased to hurt the end consumer, I care. Businesses are supposed to make money, but not at the cost of exploiting their consumers and employees.

And I do agree that nuclear plants are a good idea. However, the American people are too afraid of it, mainly due to Chernobyl and Three Mine Island. It’s not going to happen because suggesting it would be political suicide.

  38. The Reality-Based Dave says:

“Exxon Mobil Corp. pulled in $11.68 billion in profits in the second quarter, the highest quarterly income ever recorded by a U.S. company.”
    http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/business/story.html?id=f27e3320-da0a-4264-a6fa-d85c843ec677

    Damn you environmentalist hippiecommiepinkofags!

  39. Parthenon says:

Yes Dave, but how many units did they sell?

My trouble with this is that we see their profits go through the roof, we see the price go through the roof, and some among us say, ergo, we’re getting fleeced.

But if they’re making nine cents on every unit (i.e. gallon) they move, how is that fleecing? Zython made the point earlier about inelastic demands, which gasoline certainly is in the short-term, and also that people (believe they, IMO) need to drive as much as they do. What do you suppose the profit margin is on other inelastic demands, like food? Higher or lower than nine cents per unit?
