The McCains have not been paying their taxes on their San Diego condo – just one of the many properties purchased with Cindy McCain’s millions, the same millions that fly John McCain around and have financed his long political career.
San Diego County officials, it turns out, have been sending out tax notices on the La Jolla property, an oceanfront condo, for four years without receiving a response. County records show the bills, which were mailed to a Phoenix address associated with Mrs. McCain’s trust, were returned by the post office. According to a McCain campaign aide, who requested anonymity when discussing a private matter, an elderly aunt of Mrs. McCain’s lives in the condo, and the bank that manages the trust has not been receiving tax bills on the property. Shortly after NEWSWEEK inquired about the matter, the McCain aide e-mailed a receipt dated Friday, June 27, confirming payment by the trust to San Diego County in the amount of $6,744.42. County officials say the trust still owes an additional $1,742 for this year, an amount that is overdue and will go into default July 1. Told of the outstanding $1,742, the aide said: “The trust has paid all bills shown owing as of today and will pay all other bills due.”
Maybe this scandal will kill his Maverick image with the media.
CS – is that supposed to be sarcasm? If so, I suggest a smiley.
This is a sign we have on the wall at my office:
Oliver:
That is priceless.
He’s been too busy standing by the wall at his country club smoking cigarettes, drinking martinis and making snide comments about everyone passing by to pay his taxes.
Someplace in the Internets I saw that the Wingosphere has recently been in high dudgeon because Obama neglected some Cambridge parking tickets from his student days until last year.
Leaving aside the interesting notion that a candidate having ducked parking tickets is a political loser, I eagerly anticipate the wingosphere’s denunciations in this matter … of the bank. Or the elderly aunt. Or someone. Thinking of it, the property tax nonpayment is likely Obama’s fault, or maybe Al Gore’s. Or, four years of nonpayment … so the time frame makes it Kerry’s fault?
So while McCain’s constituents bake in 120 degree weather, McCain retreats to a seaside villa. And yet, the cries of “elitist” will never fall on him, instead falling on the black candidate who spent his career as a community organizer.
Hmm… from what I heard, the condo was for Mrs. McCain’s elderly aunt. Mrs. McCain keeps her finances strictly separate from Mr. McCain’s. Further, the taxes were to be paid by a trust Mrs. McCain set up for that purpose, and it was the trust that screwed up and gave the tax office a bad address to send the bills.
It’s entirely possible McCain has never even visited the condo in question.
But if this sort of thing is now fair game, can we discuss the hefty earmark Senator Obama gave his wife’s employer, and her near-coincident significant raise?
Or, if you prefer, the current status of one of Senator Obama’s proudest accomplishments — Grove Parc Plaza?

J.
Leave it to Jay to come up with an excuse!
Good to see you haven’t disappointed!
I love you saying “if this sort of thing is now fair game”, as if the GOP has just been restraining themselves. You guys have been trying to beat those drums for months now. McCain is a tax deadbeat, without reason.
Sorry your candidate sucks.
Shorter, Oliver. “DOH!”
It’s amazing that it took four years for the McCain’s or this trust to receive default letters from the treasurers office. And this guy wants to tinker with the social security trust?
Do you really want to compare quid pro quos JayTea? It is John “Keating” McCain you seem to be defending.
“Your candidate sucks.
No kidding. McCain wasn’t my first choice. Hell, he wasn’t in my top three.
Yours, however, sucks worse.
And I say that even as he moves closer and closer to my positions (NAFTA, FISA, gun control, just to name three) because I just don’t believe him. I think he was sincere when he denounced NAFTA, opposed FISA, and was a leader in the anti-gun movement, and now I think he’s just trying to “run to the center” as he says NAFTA is OK and the DC law was unconstitutional.
I believed him then, I don’t believe him now.
Which Obama do you agree with? The guy from the primaries, or the guy running now?
J.
You believe everything you see on TV, don’t you?
Jay Tea:
It’s entirely possible McCain has never even visited the condo in question.
Could happen to anyone, own a condo you’ve never visited.
It is NOT a sign of elitism. Write that a hundred times.
Repack, read it again. CINDY MCCAIN owns it, not John McCain. And, as has been noted numerous times, they keep their finances entirely separate, as per a prenup.
And Oliver, kindly point out just what I saw on TV that I referred to incorrectly. Which of Obama’s positions (then and now — “an evolving paradigm,” I believe the phrase is) did I misstate?
J.
And, as has been noted numerous times, they keep their finances entirely separate, as per a prenup.
Ah, so NONE of her money is used to support him? He doesn’t get any personal or political support from her money at all?
Sean, I’m sure if we were to go back to 2004 JT’s posts would take great pains to show that Mrs. Teresa Kerry’s money is TOTALLY seperate from Kerry and that it would be impolitic to suggest that that money is spent on John.
Enlightened, if you’d care to show me the prenup between John “Just A Gigolo” Kerry and Theresa (or, even, a reference to one) that shows that their finances are separate, I’d like to see it.
Everything I’ve seen about them indicates just the opposite — especially the way Gigolo’s personal lifestyle took a hefty step up after the marriage. (Bugatti bike, the Scaramouche boat, etc., etc.)
J.
“Enlightened, if you’d care to show me the prenup between John “Just A Gigolo” Kerry and Theresa (or, even, a reference to one) that shows that their finances are separate, I’d like to see it.”
Wow. The amount of hypocrisy you display is amazing. It is also part of the reason we don’t treat you with any respect.
By the way, we already know that McCain’s campaign has the use his wife’s jet(s) at well below fair market price. So their finances are not that separate politically. Also, I don’t think John McCain would be able to afford an artificial lake without the use of his wife’s money, so they finances are not completely separate on a personal level either.
In other words, you are a fucking liar.
Please please please let Olbermann report this on Monday…
“Please please please let Olbermann report this on Monday…”
Maybe he will award himself the Worst Person in the World. It wouldn’t be the first time he has done that.
So, stroke, you’re saying that McCain should have paid his wife full value for the use of her jet? Wouldn’t that provoke cries that he was channeling campaign funds into his family’s pockets?
My goodness, stroke. I’m trying to recall a single comment of yours that didn’t degenerate into hysterical cussing and name-calling, and I’m coming up blank.
Just because you know all the dirty words, child, doesn’t mean you have to constantly use them.
J.
“So, stroke, you’re saying that McCain should have paid his wife full value for the use of her jet? ”
Typical JT- heads he wins, tails you lose. You’re right C.S., he is subhuman trash and doesn’t deserve the benefit of a reply. I guess some people aren’t educable.
“So, stroke, you’re saying that McCain should have paid his wife full value for the use of her jet?”
Yes.
“Wouldn’t that provoke cries that he was channeling campaign funds into his family’s pockets?”
No.
As long as it is fair market value I don’t see an issue. Paying more? That would be an issue, as you brought up above. (It has happened in the past.)
“My goodness, stroke. I’m trying to recall a single comment of yours that didn’t degenerate into hysterical cussing and name-calling, and I’m coming up blank.”
Hysterical? I wasn’t hysterical when I used the word, ‘fuck.’ As for name calling, if you don’t want to be called a liar, then don’t lie.
By the way, calling me ‘Stroke’ and a ‘child’ is name calling. So that makes you a hypocrite, as well as a liar.
“Just because you know all the dirty words, child, doesn’t mean you have to constantly use them.”
The words are not dirty. And the fact that you can’t figure this our is part of what makes you a child.
Remember, practically everyone you meet is the direct result of two people fucking. There is no logical reason for people to be scared of that word. In fact, the two main reasons are based on puritanical rules and belief in magic. But magic doesn’t exist in the real world and puritans can go fuck themselves. Literally. If these assholes got laid a little more, they wouldn’t try and force their misery onto others.
“Typical JT- heads he wins, tails you lose. You’re right C.S., he is subhuman trash and doesn’t deserve the benefit of a reply. I guess some people aren’t educable.”
Incapable or unwilling to act like a human being. It seems his plan is to piss off the people he is debating with until they snap at him and then declare victory.
JT: So, stroke, you’re saying that McCain should have paid his wife full value for the use of her jet? Wouldn’t that provoke cries that he was channeling campaign funds into his family’s pockets?
Gee, you’re right. That’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.
Maybe it would be best if he didn’t, y’know, use his wife’s jets at all. Avoid that whole appearance of impropriety thing, keep the finances truly separate and not just claim they are.
Nah. Can’t expect John McC to do that.
CSS: There is no logical reason for people to be scared of that word. In fact, the two main reasons are based on puritanical rules and belief in magic.
OK, this is new to me but as one interested in lexicography, I’d like to hear more. Magic?
SaveFarris: Please please please let Olbermann report this on Monday…
See, here’s a difference I think apparent between the two “sides” that get involved in discussions like this. I don’t think anyone who is saying McCain should pay his taxes is saying that Olbermann shouldn’t. Yet, those defending McCain seem to think finding someone on the other side who likewise hasn’t paid means McCain shouldn’t be criticized.
I’m generalizing, but the “Hey, look. One of your guys did it to so you shouldn’t pick on our guy” defense is childish. The proper response is “Hey, one of your guys did it to so he should also be picked on for it.” Then, if “we” reply with anything other than “You’re right. He should.” you can honestly call “us” hypocrites instead of being such obvious ones yourself.
“OK, this is new to me but as one interested in lexicography, I’d like to hear more. Magic?”
There’s a reason why it is sometimes called cursing. Certain words are deemed inappropriate because people used to think that if you said the right syllables in the right order you could cast spells. ‘Dammit!’ is an obvious example, but at one time it was thought that if you knew how, you could shrink the teats of your neighbour’s cow, for example.
Despite the fact that this is patently retarded, it still persists today.
Who’s “scared” of strong words, stroke? I use them myself. I don’t care for their CASUAL use. I like saving them for just the right times, and I don’t like their rhetorical power being diluted through overuse. And you, sir, would be verbally crippled without them.
And I call you “stroke” as a caution — you get so worked up on occasion, I worry you might actually give yourself one. I figure if I keep using the term, it might remind you to keep yourself calm.
If you were to have a stroke, or a coronary, or an aneurysm, over the discussions here, I’d feel bad for you.
Then, I’d laugh my fucking ass off.
J.

First of all, swear words hold no power, rhetorical or otherwise. The word fuck merely sounds good. To borrow terminology from Monty Python, ‘fuck’ is a very woody word. I don’t use most of the other ’swear words’ because I don’t like how they sound. ‘Piss’ and ’shit’, for instance, sound tinny.
Secondly, when I swear, you ignore my point and concentrate on the swear word(s). You can’t handle them, because you are a child. You are a child mentally and emotionally, if not chronologically.
“And I call you “stroke” as a caution — you get so worked up on occasion,”
Two points.
1.) You are fucking lying.
2.) I don’t get worked up.
“If you were to have a stroke, or a coronary, or an aneurysm, over the discussions here, I’d feel bad for you.
Then, I’d laugh my fucking ass off.”
You just lost the right to complain when anyone calls you sub-human. Congratulations.
You know it’s really funny that the conservative right has been throwing shit into the fan to see what will stick, and their last batch was trying to paint Obama as an elitist. Hilarious, when his opponent and wife have so many houses they can’t keep track of them.
And McCain should not be using his wife’s jet. He looks like an ass because he complains about every congressperson using private corporate jets and yet oh, he does it too. Let them eat cake indeed.
“You know it’s really funny that the conservative right has been throwing shit into the fan to see what will stick…”
It’s exactly what is happening. And each attack that fails will make it harder for the next attack to stick, even if by some miracle they cut the lies and start fighting Obama on the issues.
I’d love to start fighting Obama on the issues, stroke… but the guy won’t stand still long enough to fight. He’s changing his positions on so many issues, it’s getting tough to find a place where he disagrees with me.
For example, I support NAFTA. When he came out so strongly against it — even saying we should scrap it — I was comofortable opposing him. Now he says that NAFTA is pretty good, just needs some tweaking.
He spent years and years and years fighting for gun control, serving on the board of one of the most militant gun-grabbing groups around and saying that he had no problem outlawing handguns entirely. I liked that position — it was clear, it was upfront, and I could disagree with him quite easily. Then, after the Heller decision, he said that he agreed that the DC ban (which he had supported) was unconstitutional.
I could almost support him — if I believed that his “progress” and “evolution” towards positions I hold was sincere.
Oh, and I don’t recall “complaining” about your calling me “subhuman.” I just bring it up to remind casual observers of what a frothing loony you tend to be. Hell, I uaually take it as an affirmation that you’ve run out of any other arguments, and kind of see it as a trophy.
J.
So how do you feel about McCain’s ever changing positions? Even on the issues you just spouted as examples? You will really be in a quandry at the ballot box this year.
Oh!!! Bob Barr to the rescue for JayTea.
“I’d love to start fighting Obama on the issues, stroke… but…”
But you are practically incapable of completing a sentence without lying. Back up your claims.
“Oh, and I don’t recall ‘complaining’ about your calling me ’subhuman.’”
I do. But I’m smart and you are a troglodyte.
“I just bring it up to remind casual observers of what a frothing loony you tend to be.”
And laughing at my death, what does that make you?
I’ll tell you what that makes you, that makes you exactly what you think I am. You hate me, because you’ve projected all of your emotional flaws onto me. You really hate yourself, which is practically the only position we agree on. If I were you, I would be filled with self-loathing as well.
You are, not to put too fine a point on it, nothing.
I’d love to start fighting Obama on the issues, stroke… but the guy won’t stand still long enough to fight. He’s changing his positions on so many issues, it’s getting tough to find a place where he disagrees with me.
That is fucking hilarious.
