Oliver, you interpreted what she wrote as a "sign of doom." She doesn't say anything about Obama losing.

Perhaps it was more of a, "Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it" warning. Let's be honest. Many, if not most Democrats are convinced Obama is going to win quite easily this November and will use this poll as 'evidence' of the groundswell of support.

All it really means is nothing and that nobody should be too excited or too glum at this point because anything can happen. Remember, Hillary supporters thought they had the nomination in the bag in January.

There was no "call to action", you just made that up. The absurdity was noted as well as how it fits into the fake narrative the right is trying to build. As far as the poll I'm the last person to translate that into a win, but its not often someone is up double digits in a poll and that gets interpreted by anyone but the mentally challenged as a sign of doom.

Oh- and by the way Oliver...

Perhaps in Ollie's World a 15% lead in a poll several months before an election is already a win (per your quite false analogies and catchy title) but I would imagine there are those who remember Kerry, Dukakis, Bill Buckner, and Chris ("time out") Webber who might think otherwise.

Scaife’s Tribune-Review opines that the 15% lead for Sen. Obama in that Newsweek poll is a clear sign of doom for the Obama campaign.

Wow- an opinion columnist's blog post prompts a Media Matters 'call for action.' Talk about false outrage...

(Do you mean that Newsweek poll that consisted of 38% registered Democrats and 22% registered Republicans with a majority of the remaining Independents stating they lean Democrat? I guess a bounce is a bounce, but that seems to be the ONLY poll that showed it.)

"While a big lead now doesn’t automatically spell certain doom, it does give you a false confidence that makes you think you can get away with bonehead moves like re-making the Presidential Seal."

This sinks of false outrage. If it was the other way around, the right wouldn't give a damn. Sort of like Kerry marrying a rich woman was a major issue, but McCain doing the same is fine.

I do not agree with the Tribune-Review; a lead is a good thing. But I do recall that in 2000 every time Gore moved ahead of Bush the corporate press/media took it as a sign that they should work like demons to bring Gore down. Bob Somerby has documented this.

I am expecting them to do the same with Obama.
