McCain: I think it makes you a better person. Obviously, it makes you love America. I really didn’t love America until I was deprived of her company, but probably the most important thing about it, Sean, is that I was privileged to have the opportunity to serve in the company of heroes.

    OH, SNAP!!!

Just to clarify, he’s not talking about the North Vietnamese, is he?

  2. Thanks for the shout, OW.

  3. Sean D. Martin says:

John McCain: I Didn’t Really Love America Until…

Hannity: You spent two years of this five-and-a-half-year period in solitary confinement. What does that do to a person, to spend that much time in solitary confinement?

McCain: I think it makes you a better person.

So THAT’S what we’re doing to the folks in Guantanamo. We’re making them better people.

They are going to be soooo grateful to us when they get out.

For McCain, Photo Op Trumped Iowa Recovery Efforts

Dillon’s comments came as President Bush toured the state, and hundreds of law enforcement officers were diverted from flood recovery to provide security for him.

I don’t get that. Isn’t the Secret Service responsible for protecting the president? And even if some help is needed from the local police department, “hundreds”? How unpopular is this guy that it takes “hundreds” of officers to protect him? OK, snark aside, I can’t imagine why reasonable security can’t be provided by far less than “hundreds” of officers.

I had martiani last night. I’ll probably have a martarita tonight. But I’m definitely having an Illudium PU-36 on Saturday night.

    In Iowa, fercrhissakes.

Czech Mother Accused of Skinning Caged Son, Feeding Him to Relatives

Checked out (Czeched?) the Grail Movement web page. Typically of cults and religious gobbledy-gook, it makes little coherent sense, but nowehere on their site does it say anything about eating your muthaf*cking children, you sick fucks!

  7. Zaius Nation says:

    Oops!

“Dan Abrams of MSNBC found these quotes of John McCain saying he’d never loved away before he was taken captive in North Vietnam”

    Should read:

“Dan Abrams of MSNBC found these quotes of John McCain saying he’d never loved America before he was taken captive in North Vietnam”

I saw that last night too. Dan Abrams has done some good shows lately.

Barack Obama gave me my first disappointment today. Not as bad as it could have been but bad enough. Statement re: FISA over at TPM:
    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/201032.php

My wish was that he’d come out unequivocally against the bill, because it *still* provides no meaningful impediment to President-ordered surveillance, but at least he stepped up against amnesty for Telecoms.

It’s still not too late: Raise the roof with your senators, and with Mr. Obama–remind them that not only do we think Telecoms should be accountable, but that the Bill is bad as written, for not providing adequate safeguards against Presidential misuse/abuse. The Senate vote is next week—now’s the time to get this rolling….

Secret Service regularly uses local law enforcement in support roles. And yes, “hundreds” are required every time he goes anywhere. It’s not just standing around eyeballing the crowd for shooters. You’ve got cops blocking off traffic for the motorcade, running metal detectors, and providing their own security for whatever local dignitary (Governor, Congressman, Mayor, etc) is there to meet with the President.

It’s why Bush didn’t go to New Orleans for 4 days, because those same law enforcement people would have had to be pulled off search and rescue to provide security.

    Yeah. That’s why.

Plus, it took him that long to find it on the map.

    How’s that bikini NSFW?

  12. C.S.Strowbridge says:

    “How’s that bikini NSFW?”

If you are looking at bikini pictures at work, you can get fired. At least you should get fired.

  13. Matt says:

Jeez. Thanks for the verdict, Pastor Dobson.

  14. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“Jeez. Thanks for the verdict, Pastor Dobson.”

Hey, it has nothing to do with morals, it has to do with work ethic.

If you are playing solitaire while working, you should probably be fired. You should be working while working.

  15. Duros62 says:

Probably shouldn’t be reading this while working either, huh?

GET BACK TO WORK, YOU SLACKERS!

  16. Sean D. Martin says:

If you are playing solitaire while working, you should probably be fired. You should be working while working.

I frequently walk into the cubicles of those who report to me to find them surfing the web, using IM socially, etc. I don’t see any problem with it and truly believe it is beneficial to their productivity overall to be able to take a break during the day. Certainly if they spent too much time shopping or handling personal finances, or they were surfing something inappropriate to the workplace (porn sites would be the most obvious example) I’d put a stop to it.

But being able to spend a few minutes chatting a friend (or posting comments to some Marylanders blog) makes them them feel less oppressed, better about the company and works out to the company’s benefit.

  17. Amused Observer says:

I can see that Sean doesn’t hold a position in a company where the bottom line actually effects him. There is an old management maxim that a room with over 30 people working in it can generate enough internal busywork to keep everyone occupied without any additional input from outside.

  18. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“Probably shouldn’t be reading this while working either, huh?”

    No. Probably not.

“I frequently walk into the cubicles of those who report to me to find them surfing the web, using IM socially, etc. I don’t see any problem with it and truly believe it is beneficial to their productivity overall to be able to take a break during the day.”

True, but your boss could fire you if he wanted to.

On the other hand, I was once caught be my boss playing three games of Free Cell in under 5 minutes. All he said was, “Wow. You’re good at that game.” I didn’t know he was behind me while I was playing.

In my opinion, the NSFW label is pointless because looking at ladies in bikinis is only marginally less likely to get you fired than looking at ladies who are not wearing bikinis.

  19. Sean D. Martin says:

Amused Observer: I can see that Sean doesn’t hold a position in a company where the bottom line actually effects him.

Yup. Any raises I get are completely independent of how the company is doing as is the annual bonus which makes up a considerable part of my total compensation. That part about it being tied directly to specific revenue, expense and market share targets is all just nonsense.

The bottom line does directly affect me (that’s affect, BTW, not effect) and it is considerably improved by my having employees with lower stress and more positive feelings about their workplace. This isn’t New Age crap. They work hard, they put in long hours, they deal with considerable management shit and they wouldn’t do that if I get on their case every time they take 10 minutes to browse YouTube.

  20. Sean D. Martin says:

    (sigh. close bold after “does”)

CSS: True, but your boss could fire you if he wanted to.

Of course. But he could also fire me even if I never spent a second off work-related tasks. I’ve had bosses who would fire people over spending too much time at the coffee machine. But I haven’t had them for long. I’ve left, as did a lot of other people. The amount productivity that walked out the door to be replaced by people who were less productive because they didn’t know the job was astounding.

Which goes back to one of the original points. If all you get to do at work is work, the company suffers.
