I’m not sure I believe this Newsweek poll showing Obama with a 15% lead. Frankly I think the number is really closer to the 4-6 range, though I like that historically this same poll had Kerry up 6 and even for Gore, so it’s not outside the realm of possibility. In any case, I’d rather be in Obama’s poll position than McCain’s.
Your silence on FISA is deafening. Any comment? Predictable defense? Unstereotypical anger over the chosen one?

I don’t really have a position on it, I’m not wild about it but I don’t think its the end of the world either. You can look back at my archives and see its never been an issue that I’ve really jumped on.

Obama doesn’t like the bill, but he’s not doing enough to kill it. Call it a draw. I’m not happy, but Obama’s still better than McCain this issue.

I have a bet on that Barack Obama wins the presidency with 60% of the vote. I’d be willing to put money that McCain takes under 100 electoral votes. McCain is going to be the Goldwater of the 21st century.
BTW, if this does come to pass, I do want a post on your behalf that you did hear it here first. This is the end of the Rethuglican party as we knew it. Bob Barr will pull only a few percent nationally, but watch the distributions. I will bet his support will run 10 percent in places like Idaho, where McCain needs to do best. We could be looking at a wipe-out and I think we are.
On the bill… w/o retroactive immunity, I don’t care. We can repeal it in the next congress with 100% Rethug support. All we have to do is mention that Obama now has the power to listen as they deal away the country. Oh… and access to all those White House conversations captured under “Total Information Awareness” back in 2001-2008. Sauce for the gander in my book

When you write posts like that is it because you didn’t take the medication? I didn’t have a strong opinion on fISA long before Obama was a candidate. I understand its important but I can’t muster up the care to be OUTRAGED by this when the economy is in the crapper and we’re stuck in Iraq. Sorry I didn’t get the memo about how I was supposed to feel.
Well, I think the thing that worries people, is that he did offer to be kind of a change agent and, well, that’s not change. A filibuster would be nice. I don’t know. I guess the question is if he can’t fight this why would he do the things that would actually improve the economy (massive infrastructure rebuilding would be a great start) or actually do things that would stop the war. Can he say he doesn’t want 58 bases in Iraq or some horrible iraqi contract that the Iraqis sign under duress?
I mean, the people that like the war are the AIPAC/DLC duopoly that runs the dems, or enough dems so that we can’t change anything significant, or the rahms, schumers, Leibermans, hoyers and fords of this world. Here’s a nice chance to show what a real deal change agent looks like and that they won’t be running his white house explaining how we have to fund the evil war that everybody hates…Don’t get me wrong. He’s still better than Hillary and McCain…I guess the question is by how much and is it significant…

All you have to do is look at the numbers behind the poll to see how you get to the result. 38% Registered Democrats, 22% registered Republicans, the rest “independents”, a majority Democrat leaning. Now wouldn’t that skew the entire poll?

I’m not sure why FISA got brought up in this one, but hey- now that Obama doesn’t have to run against Hillary for Democrat votes, he’ll continue to creep toward the center. It’s already happening with FISA, Free Trade, troop withdraw in Iraq, etc.

Why not just no let it become law in the first place? I really don’t understand the “It’s okay to create a problem because we can always clean it up later.” attitude.
Mostly becuase that just doesn’t happen. Far, far harder to remove an existing law than to not have it created in the first place.

Is the 38/22/the rest distribution different then the general population? If so, then you have a point. Otherwise, if the general population is something along those proportions, there is no skewing involved at all.
Yeah, the general population is in line with that party ID. Cons are more likely to ID as Independent than with Republican.

I expect my representatives (which on items of national law include everyone in Congress and the Senate) to not allow the Republicans to get away with keeping important things obscure. They WANT this to fly below the radar. That, if nothing else, is a reason to draw attention to it.
Saying it’s obscure so we shouldn’t pay any attention to it goes along with exactly what they want.
I didn’t say we shouldn’t pay attention to it, but it is an obscure thing. If people had found a way to make it translatable to real life we’d be talking and pols would feel some urgency to oppose it.
