Finally found a shorthand way to make the point I was after.

If most successful presidential candidates = 10

and if one's being African-American is a political detriment to the equivalent of about -5,

Then Obama is about a 15.

THAT'S what's most historic to me: we got ourselves a 15!

Time, as you say, to get to work...

I saw Ironman yesterday (what fun!) and had to laugh when I saw the Head Scary Arab Terrorist Guy was wearing a keffeiya. And a black and white one at that. I simply cannot wait for the "BLARGH! SPUTTER!!! MALKIN WAS RIGHT!" reaction when greater wingnnuttia notices.

And, oh, yes, great day for our nation, and great picture of Obama & Michelle.

Correction. This was an important day for all of America. Not to disagree completely with your sentiments. It's just that, in terms of reasons to be excited about what Obama is doing politically, the package is just awesome. That he's also helping move America one step further from its awful past is just icing on the cake.

Yesterday was the first good day for my country in a long time. It felt GOOD.

I just want it to be remembered that, at one point, there were people (including African-Americans) who were insinuating the crazy notion that Barack Obama "wasn't black enough." Remember that bit of lunacy? Times sure have changed, and for the better!

"Obama is ahead in [...] the non-Puerto Rico popular vote by 158,155 (17,449,889 to 17,291,734). Two notes: 1) we're not including Texas in this contest count, given that Clinton won the primary but Obama won the caucus and netted the most total Texas delegates, and 2) after Saturday's DNC decision, we're now counting Florida and Michigan as wins for Clinton -- but, per guidance from the DNC, we're including Florida's popular vote but not Michigan's. More on the popular vote... If you count Puerto Rico, Obama still leads by 16,493 votes (17,571,347 to 17,554,854). The only measure in which Clinton leads in the popular vote is if you include Michigan. When you add those results <B><I>and don't give Obama 'Uncommitted,'</I></B> Clinton's lead increases to 311,658 (17,883,005 to 17,571,347). Of course, none of our popular vote counts includes votes in the Dems Abroad primary, Guam, Virgin Islands, Maine, or Washington State." <a HREF="http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/06/04/1107917.aspx" rel="nofollow">Chuck Todd</A>

last night was amazing.

did anyone catch the line from McCain's speech where he said, "that's why I support BIG BUSINESS, and not the small family farmer"

perhaps i wasn't paying enough attention, or maybe Mr. McCain just flubbed his lines, but SOMEBODY has to create a PAC commercial with that quote front and center.

Markman and ryptide stole my line.

Consider the caliber of the nominee. Sixteen months under the 24/7 news microscope and Obama still emerges as breathtakingly honest, a candidate who speaks to the American people as though they're adults, a nuanced and cultivated mind in the service of the commonweal, a natural "executive personality" whose bid for the White House seems no less than destiny fulfilled. In a heretofore all-white arena, a black person needs the forbearance of a saint to allay all the little xenophobic fears of whites (think Jackie Robinson, Marian Anderson), and I say Obama is close to one only because I don't want to be accused of hyperbole in saying he IS one. But his gracious and generous demeanor seems to be a natural part of him, not an ideologically-driven code of conduct.

Scrutinizing him through print and television over these past months inclines me to use the word "awesome." Even Gore would have had peevish moments, petty episodes. Kennedy never had such scrutiny.

If Americans can distinguish between diamonds and sludge (and I want to be convinced that, this time, we can), we're going to be very lucky in November. Individuals like Obama enter the political sphere only very, very rarely. And maybe he is a singularity, transformational, as they say.

I used to think Nelson Mandela as the tallest man on the planet. The tests of this primary may not be comparable to years in a South African prison, but I'm prepared to revisit that judgment in the future; Obama may be his equal.
