More likely, he made the story up in a clumsy ploy to gain sympathy. In many regions and cultures around the world, this is called “lying.”

And no doubt the man actually believes his giving up golf game is a sacrifice on par with losing your child/parent/spouse in an unnecessary war.

In Buffy the Vampire Slayer the greatest curse they could level on a vampire was to give it back it’s soul. Then he’d understand and regret all the harm he caused so many over the centuries.
