Politico Jumps To ABC’s Defense

Let’s just say it doesn’t exactly make a great case for ABC, when the longest winded defense of your horrific debate tactics comes from The Politico – a “news” organization that has its entire business model based on the freak show of distraction rather than the substance of policy.

It’s like George W. Bush giving a lecture on competence with a straight face.

Politico actually makes some fair points.

I didn’t see this collective bellyaching after the Philadelphia debate on 10/30/08 where Hillary was savaged by all participants safe Bill Richardson.

For the remaining of that week Hillary was ridiculed by many for whining although she herself didn’t. Her supporters and some objective observers complained about that gang bang.

Here is what the Daily Howler wrote:

At any rate, the “men” did go after Clinton last night—holding hands like blubbering babies, looking like frightened, wet-legged boys. Brian and Tim and Barack and John learned an inspiring lesson last night—if the four hold hands and help each other, they can work up their courage to dunk the vile witch. Yes, they did the same thing to Candidate Gore, simply pretending that he was a woman. But this will be done to Democratic front-runners as long as we Dems and libs permit it. And uh-oh! If the work of our brilliant web leaders provides clues, this will go on for a very long time. So will Republican control of the White House.

And there was this the next day:

Has there ever been a debate like this? A debate where the moderators so plainly intended to spend the evening trashing the character of one of the candidates? The only comparison we could dimly offer was Judy Woodruff’s gruesome performance in the final 2000 Gore-Bradley debate, where she worked so hard to express the outrage The Village felt against Big Liar Gore. (“They hate Gore,” Mickey Kaus wrote that week, surprised, having just arrived in New Hampshire.) As we’ve said, we’ll run through all Tuesday’s questions tomorrow—all the Clinton-sliming questions from this truly remarkable session. But have you ever seen a presidential debate where one candidate was essentially given two minders—where every word that came out of her mouth was immediately handed to her leading opponents for their inspection and review? In our view, it was embarrassing to see Edwards and Obama display the moral weakness required by such a cheap auto-da-fe. Only Richardson had the decency to say, out loud: “I just won’t go there.”

The ABC debate was not much different, only as Politico put it:

In fact, the balance of political questions (15) to policy questions (13) was more substantive than other debates this year that prompted no deluge of protests. The difference is that this time there were more hard questions for Obama than for Clinton.

We had let it come this far because way too many of us were cheering as long as Hillary Clinton was at the receiving end.

This probably what Armondo@Talkleft has dubbed “The Revenge of Boehlert”.

  3. The Politico was started by the wing nut Albritton family(They have a history of donating to Republican and wing nut causes). Glenn Greenwald did a great write up about The Politico a while back. They are rotten to the core.
