German PM Angela Merkel will not be attending the opening ceremony of the Olympics due to China’s ongoing brutality in Tibet.

British PM Gordon Brown will not be attending the opening ceremony of the Olympics due to China’s ongoing brutality in Tibet.

There was a time in my lifetime where this sort of thing started at the White House and emanated out to the rest of the world’s leaders.

I hope it’s just that that sort of leadership is in hibernation due to the current unqualified occupant, and not any sort of long term thing.

    So the people are in the streets everywhere. London – stiff upper lip protests and Brown decided not to touch the torch. France – pull off a riot and put out that flame like only the French could. San Francisco – hanging off the bridge to stop the hanging. Maybe we should create a special Oh-Limp-Pics for those not-so-free societies to be paraded every four years. It will give us all a chance to show how we feel about injustice around the world. It is obvious that the media will only report on it if there is a sound-bite and a photo opportunity. Maybe something for tyrant to carry the torch of torture every four years.     Oh please. This is nothing but political posturing at its worst. They’re not going to attend opening ceremonies. WOW! That will surely do something about the situation in Tibet.

    Why don’t they boycott the games and not send their athletes if they want to protest so badly about Tibet? Why don’t they put a freeze on all Chinese imports into their countries?

    Because not attending the opening ceremonies is an easy, but completely meaningless thing to do.

    Thanks to the policies of the current unqualified occupant of the White House we are in debt to China to such a level that we dare not protest any action they might take. If they call in the loans they tank our economy overnight.

    The repubs add trillions to the debt but turn a blind eye to human rights violations because China and Saudi Arabia keep buying t-bills to keep this Hoovernomic house of cards from collapsing

    Of course, the Chinese want to close off access to Everest for the duration, just so nobody will hoist a banner that says “Boo, China!” They wouldn’t be at all sensitive to a gesture like the leader of the freakin’ free world pissing on their parade!
