Redskins Cheerleaders Invade India

“The Washington Redskins Cheerleaders, deemed the ‘First Ladies of Football,’ will be traveling to India on April 10th to create the first ever cheerleading squad in that country for cricket’s Royal Challengers Bangalore, part of the new Indian Premier League (IPL), in their inaugural game on April 18th.”

But of course they are.

More from the release: Twelve cheerleaders, 18 days, four cricket games, a second wave of training and the following claim: “By the time this project is complete, the Redskins Cheerleading department will have spent over 10 weeks creating a new cheerleading world in India.”

A whole new world, folks.

    I do hope they plan to tone down their outfits. The one pictured would not be well received in India.

    Quaker – India is a Hindu nation, not a Muslim nation.

    They might have to tone the cleavage down, like, an inch.

    I’m well aware, Spider. It’s true the movies have been allowing skimpier attire lately. But recall the flap over Richard Gere giving a public peck on the cheek to Shilpa Shetty.

    Generally, modesty rules in India.

    Calcutta (I stick with the old spelling).

    The Richard Gere-Shilpa Shetty incident was different. When movie-goers pay to see a movie, they know it is fiction (hopefully they know). But to see Gere behave like that in public was probably not wise. Besides, it was a big deal to maybe 100 people, out of a billion.

    Yeah, I know. It’s a small minority who make noise there–just like here.

    However, I think your observation about the divide between what’s accepted on-screen versus what’s acceptable in person is what I was driving at.

    If you were advising the cheerleaders, what would you recommend?

    I haven’t been to the Calcutta side of India–only Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi. Maybe next time! :-)

    A liaison, if you will. For the good of both cultures.

    When they are on the cricket pitch, they can be dressed in their outfits. But for just going sight-seeing, I’d recommend something long-sleeved. If they want to go native, a salwaar-kameez can be quite graceful, comfortable in the heat, and since it covers up most of the skin, it will protect against mosquitoes.

    Oliver – although I only lived in DC from 1999-2002, I still have a Redskins cheerleader calendar from my time there. They are something else.

    Hm. Disappearing post.

    Bipasha is very pretty–and shapely too! I only recognize the names of a couple of her movies, and I have seen either of them yet.

    I like Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta. Also, I’m an older fellow, so another of my favorites has been around a bit longer: Madhuri Dixit.

    Also, it’s the intimate contact that creates the problem. Notice how no matter how skimpy the outfits in the films get, or how passionate the love scene, the romantic leads never kiss or otherwise touch each other in an intimate area.

    The cheerleaders, as actors in an entertainment, will be fine as long as they don’t make out with Jason Campbell.

    Cheerleader concept in India should been introduced properly and just having skimmpy clad women jumping aroung in front of the crowd ..doesnt make sense. People or the organisers should think deep of the concept, i am totally not against cheerleader show concept .. but we Indian should think in a very indian way possible, we have to educate the society before introducing such concepts, or else it just remains HALF NAKED PROVOCATING WOMEN JUMPING IN FRONT OF THE CROWD, WHICH MAKES no SENSE TO THE COMMON PEOPLE. This becomes a distraction instead of Attraction or the sense of healthy Entertainmant for the Indian Crowd.
    Its just an advice and each one of US Indians should think how to introduce such kind of alien concept to the common Indians.
    Get thing slow…… slow and steady wins the eace, education isa must when something new is introduced to our society.
