"One would think an American senator would err on the side of jobs for Americans in America."

What he should and has done is err on the side of the law. All McCain had done is expose and stop a corrupt no-bid process which then allowed a legal bidding process to begin one in which Boeing lost.

I would think liberals would be against corruption and no-bid contracts. It seems not.

Is it worth noting that an active Airbus lobbyist works on McCain's campaign staff?

Just askin'.

I agree with Niraj that Boeing's claim that it should get the contract simply b/c it's an American company is too extreme. However, the argument they make that the requirements were changed in the middle of the evaluation to accomodate Airbus's bigger plane is credible and may be true. I think this another one of endless issues with this administration that needs to be looked at. Maybe it will happen next year (assuming McCain is not president, of course).

Boeing has set up a blog in which they discuss what appears to be a very flawed proposal evaluation.

http://boeingblogs.com/tanker/
http://www.boeing.com/ids/globaltanker/usaf/facts.html

If the blog and facts are to be believed, it seems incredible that the Boeing proposal was not chosen and almost certain that the Airbus aircraft will be more expensive than is claimed, more expensive over its lifetime, and actually far too large to be successfully used by the Airforce.

What a load of crock. American jobs are not being lost but gained. Airbus and Northrop-Grumman have agreed to establish a production line in the United States. Airbus aircraft being built in Europe contain components-- including engines and avionics-- manufactured in the United States, thus creating even more jobs.

The idea that Boeing is an "American" company is simply not true in the age of globalization. In fact, many of the components that make up the various Boeing aircraft are made overseas, yet no one complains about job losses there.

I'm surprised liberals like Oliver is complaining about this given how much they bleat about the over-inflated defence budget. I never consider weapon systems to be so sacrosanct that we give contracts only to American companies.

Airbus lobbyists are some of McCain's senior advisors. You can learn more about that here:

<a href="http://www.oliverwillis.com/index.php/2008/03/13/john-mccain-did-his-lobbyist-ties-to-airbus-cost-american-jobs/" rel="nofollow">http://www.oliverwillis.com/index.php/2008/03/13/john-mccain-did-his-lobbyist-ties-to-airbus-cost-american-jobs/</a>

(Okay, so my googling came back to you....)
