Montgomery County, Maryland County Exec Ike Legget’s $65,000 Bathroom

What a load of crap.

As Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett works to raise taxes and eliminate 225 jobs, a construction crew is installing a bathroom in his locked suite of offices, complete with a small sitting room and shower. The cost to taxpayers: $65,225.

Leggett’s aides said yesterday that his security detail did not want him using the public restroom because walking to and from the facility could expose him to harm. The shower was included, an aide said, because Leggett lives about 40 minutes away from the Rockville office and regularly attends evening events without having time to freshen up at home.

“I don’t see this as a big expenditure,” Leggett (D) said. Describing himself as “the guy who flies coach and spends sparingly,” he said, “It’s not something I asked for.”

Oh, this is awesome. Evidently, Leggett and his contractors don’t watch “Sweat Equity.” For 65 large, you could renovate six to ten serviceable bathrooms. With showers. Of course, you’d have to forgo gold-plated fixtures.

Are there many armed terrorists lurking between Leggett’s office and the public restroom?

    Seriously, this is recall material.

I live in MOCO. THis is ricockulous. Of all the people losing their jobs and all the budget cuts and this clown needs a private bathroom. Shame. Shame Shame.

It’s also, apparently, not something he turned down.

One could rehab one, arguably two Baltimore rowhouses for that money.

How Ike Leggett needs a “security detail” of that depth is beyond me. I mean, I know that the mean streets of Rockville pose some hazards, but primarily from yuppie motorists text-messaging with one hand while adjusting the in-vehicle DVD player for the kids with the other. I manage to do well with one shower a day; does Ike Leggett lay brick or block for a living?

And how does one live 40 minutes from Rockville within Montgomery County anyway, traffic notwithstanding? I make it all the way to Rockville from two counties away in Reisterstown in traffic in about 70 minutes….

I find that it is poor journalism when I find that this whole thing boils down to a new bathroom, not in his private office like it is portrayed in many reports, but behind the glass doors that will be used by many people. The attempts to slant the story to make it a salacious expenditure of a greedy, selfish county government official is reminiscent of the reporter in the HBO series The Wire.

Shame on the Washington Post, the author who wrote the story, Ann Marimow, and shame on any jack ass out there who focuses on this instead of the Billions being wasted in Iraq and the young men and women being killed their!

Any public officer who says something that stupid should lose their jobs immediately.
