John McCain is refusing to renounce the endorsement of a prominent Texas televangelist who Democrats say peddles anti-Catholic and other intolerant speech.
Instead, the Republican presidential candidate issued a statement Friday afternoon saying he had unspecified disagreements with the San Antonio megachurch leader, John Hagee. Hagee endorsed him at a news conference Wednesday in San Antonio.
The man says Catholicism is a cult and that we need to create war in the Middle East to bring about Armageddon.
Why is it so hard for John McCain to denounce that? How short a leash does the religious far right have on him?
This better get enough air time on the news to kill his career. John Hagee is exactly the same type of “agent of intolerance” McCain denounced 8 years ago.
I see no “anti-Jewish” speech in your link, O-Dub, what did I miss?
“I see no ‘anti-Jewish’ speech in your link, O-Dub, what did I miss?”
It might not be in that speech, but he’s said bigoted stuff about the Jews (and the Muslims), in the past. He’s one of those people who thinks if you don’t belong to his church, you are going to hell.
C.S., that’s most Christians in the United States. It’s what standard Protestant Christianity teaches. Not noteworthy. Of course non-believers go to Hell
“C.S., that’s most Christians in the United States. It’s what standard Protestant Christianity teaches. Not noteworthy. Of course non-believers go to Hell”
He doesn’t say, ‘Non-Christians are going to hell!’ He says, ‘If you don’t belong to the same branch of Protestant Church as me, you are going to hell!’
It’s a lot smaller group that thinks that way.
Bruce, you could have easily Googled this and answered your own question.
Hagee only sees Jews as a convenient tool for bringing about the Rapture. He has called them spiritually blind, blamed them for the Holocaust (really, its the same logic which led him to blame Katrina on the gay community), and openly asserted that they killed Christ.
Honestly, this whole associating people with their most extreme supporters thing is ridiculous. Farrakhan supported Obama. This guy supports McCain. Who’s surprised? Why should either have to denounce these nutjobs, just return any money they try to give you and move on.
Remember how Republicans claimed Osama favored Kerry? If still alive, Hitler would probably favor the Republican and Stalin the Democrat. Enough with the guilt by association, it’s stupid.
It’s more like “hypocrisy in action,” and it needs to be called out or, as in the past, the Right will dominate and set the tone for the campaign. Kerry failed miserably to understand this simple basic truth. The media and ass clowns like Tim Russert will beat this meme to death over Obama’s head, but I’m betting that without a lot of noise from the Left, and possibly even despite it, they will let Saint Maverick McCain get yet another pass. What’s more, this isn’t a case of an unsolicited endorsement from an unsavory fringe lunatic. This is an endorsement McCain actively sought out.
ditto what bill l. said. Notice that a lot of these Democratic comebacks are after Hillary or Obama has been slimed. Got to think that the Democratic “war machine” isn’t going to let Obama or Hillary get swift boated again.
Great name, by the way. It really fits.
“Farrakhan supported Obama. This guy supports McCain.”
You can’t be this stupid. McCain courted Hagee. McCain touted this endorsement. McCain is proud of being endorsed by a complete asshole like this.
There is a fucking difference.
(On a side note, Stalin would have supported the Republicans. They certainly have more in common.)
