On behalf of a coal mining company he introduced legislation that stripped 10,000 Navajo of their land (on which their families and ancestors had lived since 1500 AD), forcibly relocated many to a nuclear waste spill site, and turned the land over to a puppet tribal council, who then opened the land to strip mining- poisoning the rest of the native Americans on the reservation.
