First Kennedy, Now Eisenhower
Tweet
President Eisenhower’s granddaughter has endorsed Sen. Obama.
The biggest barrier to rolling up our sleeves and preparing for a better future is our own apathy, fear or immobility. We have been living in a zero-sum political environment where all heads have been lowered to avert being lopped off by angry, noisy extremists. I am convinced that Barack Obama is the one presidential candidate today who can encourage ordinary Americans to stand straight again; he is a man who can salve our national wounds and both inspire and pursue genuine bipartisan cooperation. Just as important, Obama can assure the world and Americans that this great nation’s impulses are still free, open, fair and broad-minded.
The intriguing thing about this is that Ike would have been cast out the modern Republican party. A certified bonafied war hero, Ike would have been too liberal with expenditures for things like the Interstate Highway System (a government project to which trillions of private wealth owe gratitude to) to slake the lust of today’s conservatives.

Jonah Goldberg calls Ike (and Nixon!) liberal fascists in his book, so yeah, you’re right.
The modern GOP would cast out Reagan, too.
After all:
“This is a guy who raised taxes six years in a row, gave amnesty to illegal immigrants, sat down with the Soviet Union with no preconditions, wildly increased the size of the federal government, exploded the deficit, saved Social Security by instituting a large payroll tax, retreated from Beirut after a terrorist bombing, expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit.”
H/t Ezra Klein.
About the only thing left in Reagan’s legacy for them to admire is his opposition to MLK day and his support of death squads in Central America.
More proof (if anymore is needed)that Jonah Goldberg is a farkin’ idiot.
Bear in mind that the interstate highway system had military applications too. There’s a reason why highway overpasses are 11’6″. The height of an ICBM missile transport. Ike thought it would deter the Soviets if our missile base was mobile and couldn’t be pinpointed.
So there’s that.
Maria Shriver for Obama! Did I call that or what?
Nicely done. Now who’s going to win on Super Tuesday?
Um…the Giants.
Remember Eisenhower gave the speech warning about the “military-industrial complex” also. It must be remembered however that Eisenhower created it through his support of (chicken)hawks like John Foster Dulles.
Ike appointed Earl Warren and William Brennan, the pair that finally recognized that racial equality is in the Constitution. And conservatives have never forgotten.
