"Not one I'd vote for in a million years, but he is a candidate, and he is older than McCain"

But he doesn't look older. McCain looks like he's coming up to his before before date.

I don't want to sound crass... okay, that's a lie, but it is the truth; McCain looks like he is too old for the job.

if there were a President and Prime Minister, I might vote for [Billy] Graham as that sort of President

This is Billy Graham the delusional, superannuated, "Come on down!" televangelist/stadium preacher? Elmer Gantry in Armani? As a political leader?

When did I leave Earth? I'm in Bizarro World.

Ron Paul is older, by a year and 9 days. Seeing as he's gotten more votes than 9iu11ani and the Gucci Loafer Fred Thompson, perhaps he should be mentioned as a candidate, and one with a better chance than, oh, Kucinich.

You definitely need to get rid of the process of candidate selection. Two fricking years these elections take. Two years.

I think you need to go to a parliamentary system like we have in Canada. This way the leader of the nation will have to deal with question period every week. You would never have a situation where your government could control the message as much as Bush did. In fact, since the leader has to be elected, and would have survive the parliamentary system to being with, you would never had Bush at all.

(Keep your elected Senate, on the other hand.)

Either way, McCain's a train wreck, but it's worth noting that Germany's primary policy executive is its Chancellor (Bundeskanzler) Angela Merkel. Germany also has a president - whose name I forget - who performs predominantly symbolic acts.

I think that that system is wise: to separate the technoratic and symbolic roles. I would never vote for Billy Graham for U.S. President but if there were a President and Prime Minister, I might voter for Graham as that sort of President (and Gore, Obama, etc. as Prime Minister.) While the U.S. Presidential system works okay for a republic of 5-6 million citizens as it was in the early 1800s, I think it's a bad choice for an planetary empire of 300 million people.

"McCain looks like death warmed over."

If he was just old, it wouldn't be an issue. But he is old, with health problems, and doesn't appear as sharp as he used to be.

If he was 60 and had these issues, I wouldn't want him to be president.

McCain looks like death warmed over. I saw him on the news giving some kind of stump speech in Florida and he was all hunched over, moving around stiff as a board, and he was barking out all of these disjointed cliches and he looked really confused while he was doing this.
Can you see him in a debate with either Hillary or Obama?
He'll get destroyed.
He really is at his retirement age. He isn't fit for high office any longer. They may be able to hide him in the Senate, but out in the spotlight he looks about as virile as Senator Byrd.

MrGreyGhost: "Ah yes, the old liberal ploy: confuse a couple foreign leader names and you're not fit to be president. Because yunno, voters really care about that sort of thing. And yeah, look at how all those personal attacks from libs on Bush stopped him from ever being elected...twice even."

What the fuck? Is this a joke?

It's a liberal ploy to want your presidential candidates to know what the fuck they are talking about. Seek professional help.

Yes, and look what happened when Americans mistakenly thought that sort of thing didn't matter. Somehow I don't see the same mistake happening again.
