Al Qaeda Republicans

6:47 pm EST January 16th, 2008 | Republicans | 28 Comments

There is no end to my pleasure that after three-fourths of a decade of the right calling liberals and Democrats everything from terrorists to terrorist sympathizers to terrorist enablers, it is a Republican charged with funding terrorism.

The money laundering, conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges against former Michigan Rep. Mark Deli Siljander are part of a 42-count indictment released by the U.S. attorney’s office in Kansas City, Missouri.

Siljander "vehemently denies the allegations in the indictment and will enter a not guilty plea," said his attorney, James Hobbs.

Prosecutors allege Siljander’s co-defendants — the directors of an Islamic charity — hired him to get the organization off a list of agencies suspected of links to terrorism and paid him with stolen U.S. government funds.

The Treasury Department designated the Islamic American Relief Agency as a suspected fundraiser for terrorists in 2004, The Associated Press reported.

Siljander is also accused of lying to federal agents and prosecutors about his work for the group, which allegedly steered $260,000 to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar — an ally of the Taliban and al Qaeda.

The United States named Hekmatyar a "specially designated global terrorist" in 2003.

NRCC Feeling Heat From Left and Right

    Posted by Brandon English

The National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) and the Republican Congressmen they’ve helped to elect are still resisting calls to give back or donate to charity the money they received from an alleged terrorist financier.

Their decision to hold onto money linked to terrorism is all the more baffling considering the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has already donated the money they took from the indicted donor to charity.

The NRCC’s unwillingness to give up the dirty money has sparked outrage on all sides of the political spectrum.

    Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari.

“According to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York’s office, Mr. Alishtari was taken into custody “on charges of terrorism financing, material support of terrorism, and international money laundering, as well as additional charges of conspiracy and wire fraud.”

I guess I was wrong. Real wrong.

Why that’s Debbie Schlussel’s old boss. One always wondered where she got her terrorist-wannabe tendencies from.

  3. merl says:

Republican’ts are guilty of everything they accuse Democrats of. If they call you a traitor, it’s because they’ve committed treason. The same with terrorist sympathizer.

I tend to see these incidents as cause for anger and sorrow, not glee.

I don’t recall rejoicing over the conviction of Lynn Jennings, or the travails of Congressman William Jefferson, or the conviction of Duke Cunningham, or any other similar cases. I see each of them as bad news for our nation, and their effect on any one political party as an almost trivial concern.

That may be because I tend to think of myself as an American first, and any party affiliations (I was an independent for years, then a Democrat for five years, and an independent for the last three (excluding the five minutes I was a Republican to vote in the New Hampshire primary) as much, much less relevant.

I suppose I could be glad that our law enforcement guys busted up these scumbags and the former Congressman will get his day of reckoning, but even that’s a bit of a stretch.

(shrug) But feel free to enjoy it if you like. It’s a free country.

We know, Jay. Oh, we know.

  6. Quaker in a Basement says:

Well, Jay Tea, you’re remarkably upright and, you know, serious for somebody who hangs with people who still like to crack jokes about the death of Ms. Kopechne.

    Maybe you need new friends.

Good for you. I agree. You’re missing the point.

As noted, my mere status as a liberal has been enough excuse for many Republicans to accuse me and those like-minded to be “terrorist sympathizers” who “want America to lose.”

I believe it was the Vice President himself, and possibly Rudy Giulianine-eleven, who said that a Democratic President would all but assure another horrific attack on America. Why? Because Kerry openly admitted he wanted such things? No, it can’t be that. Because Obama is a secret Muslim? Nope, wrong there.

The only reason? Well, um, they’re liberals and Democrats. Everybody knows how THOSE people are.

So I too admit a measure of grim satisfaction (not quite as celebratory as OW’s) to see a Republican being formally charged with terrorist ties. You’re right that it’s a real problem in the grander scheme. But in the short run, maybe Republicans will finally shut up with their “Democrats=Fifth Columnists” nonsense.

(I doubt it, but it would be nice.)

Not content with merely engaging in some chest thumping about this guy (who was caught in part due to powers given to investigators in the Patriot Act), Oliver has to resort to the requisite whining about the big mean Republicans.

After years and years of seeing Democrats compare Republicans to Nazis, accuse them of wanting to starve children, of wanting to throw old people out on the street, hating puppies and other assorted accusations, you’ll forgive me if I don’t shed tears.

  10. Jay said: After years and years of seeing Democrats compare Republicans to Nazis, accuse them of wanting to starve children, of wanting to throw old people out on the street, hating puppies and other assorted accusations…

Liberals want the terrorists to win.
Conservatives want to spy on your bedroom.
Democrats want to experiment on unborn babies.
    Republicans want to starve children.

You mean (gasp!!) there has been hyperbole on both sides????

Wow. That is such a great outlook. Thank you, Jay Tea, for sharing that with us. You’re truly special, and the Internets are a much better place with you around. And please, Jay Tea, I think I virtually speak for all of the good and wholesome Internets when I urge you to tell us more about what Jay Tea Would Do. You’re so awesome. How else are you awesome?

    Thanks again,
ed for ed and the Internets

  12. The right has been saying for years now we are in favor of terrorists. Cry me a river that it turns out that it is a member of the right that has been working for them.

Careful Jay. You’re going to hurt yourself reversing direction that quickly.

  14. After years and years of seeing Democrats compare Republicans to Nazis, accuse them of wanting to starve children, of wanting to throw old people out on the street, hating puppies and other assorted accusations

… all they ACTUALLY do is just raise money for terrorists and molest underage boys.

    Shame on you, Oliver.

  15. Jay Tea says:

August, Gerry Studds was a Democrat. And after his censure (which he rejected), he remained a Democrat in good standing and lauded by many right up until his death.

If you meant to refer to Mark Foley, he never pursued an underage boy. That’s why he’s now a joke and a disgusting former Congressman, and not in prison.

Which is where I’d like to see the sonofabitch, but he stayed just within the letter of the law.

Is basking the in the situational irony still on the table?

Awww…are the party in power getting their fee-fee’s hurt? Wah wah wah.

Seriously, Jay, why DO you hate America so much?

  17. August, Gerry Studds was a Democrat.

And? Does have something to do with why all these Republicans are leaving us, shall we say, prematurely?

You were going for one of those “OMG did you know Robert Byrd was in the Klan?” kinda comebacks, weren’t you?

  18. midderpidge says:

And Mark Foley preyed on young boys. And, the Republican leadership in congress covered it up, smearing the aberrant actions of an individual all over the national party. Thank you for playing.

  19. Enlightened Liberal says:

So now a homosexual who had a consensual affair with a 17-yo page is equal to a terrorist funder. Got it JT. Awesome.

  20. Jay Tea says:

Enlightened, August was the one who diverged into pederasty. I just had to keep his facts straight (so to speak) for him.

And while I agree that Foley is scum and deserves all that’s happened to him and more, I think what Studds did was far, far worse — and closer to what August hinted at than Foley.

I also brought up Lynn Jennings, who is still a darling of the left despite her conviction for aiding Al Qaeda. That’d be a better comparison to Siljander, but no one wants to discuss her.

    I wonder why?

    J.

  21. Enlightened Liberal says:

What state did Lynn Jennings serve in Congress jay?

  22. fafaroo says:

“That’d be a better comparison to Siljander, but no one wants to discuss her. I wonder why?”

Like you recently didn’t want to discuss Rove’s dirty campaigning in relation to Hilary Clinton?

  23. midderpidge says:

Never heard of her. I guess she must be a huge darling of the left.

Really though, as for terrorist financing, Bush’s complete fuckup in Iraq has done more to finance al Qaeda and anti-American violence than anyone. The complete lack of accounting has placed billions in money and weaponry in terrorist and insurgent’s hands.

  24. Quaker in a Basement says:

“I also brought up Lynn Jennings, who is still a darling of the left despite her conviction for aiding Al Qaeda.”

That’s right. Down at the Leftist S/he-Person Freedom Hater’s Clubhouse, folks are always saying stuff like, “That Lynn Jennings! She’s just the awesomest, she is!”

Mr. Tea, I’ve seen you make up some crazy caca before, but you’re looking good for a personal best today.

  25. “And while I agree that Foley is scum and deserves all that’s happened to him and more, I think what Studds did was far, far worse — and closer to what August hinted at than Foley.”

Sending sexually harassing messages to underaged pages is a crime. We know that at least some of these pages were troubled by these messages.

What Studds did was not a crime. Having sex with an employee is unethical, but it is not a crime.

So how the fuck is it much, much worse?

  26. Zython says:

I also brought up Lynn Jennings, who is still a darling of the left despite her conviction for aiding Al Qaeda. That’d be a better comparison to Siljander, but no one wants to discuss her.

    I wonder why?

According to wikipedia, Lynn Jennings is just a Track & Field athlete. Didn’t actually think someone would bother to look it up, did you? When will you people learn that this is the 21st century, and what would take hours of exhaustive research at a library back in the 50s now can be done in seconds from one’s own home.

So how the fuck is it much, much worse?

He’s referring to him being openly gay.

  27. Quaker in a Basement says:

I just assumed he meant Lynne Stewart. Mr. Tea, who the heck is Lynn Jennings?
