Pelosi: Fail On Christmas

That the speaker of the House is allowing stupid, dumb ass resolutions like this on the floor indicates just how bad the current congress is. What a waste of time. What a waste of a majority.

They can vote acknowledging the existence of Christmas, but they can’t do shit otherwise. Awesome.

Ah, expressing that Christian ideal of love and respect for all mankind:

” Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

    (5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians

Yup, the rest of you can go fuck yourselves. Your Congress at “work”, ladies and gentlemen.

This is another example of how completely stupid politics has gotten. That this is even an issue in the H.R. is so retarded I want to go on a shooting spree.
    I love this part:
acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization
So the House is in support of the near genocidal removal of Native American tribes at the start of the colonial period, the removal of over 80% of the native people in Southern America, and every treaty that was violated in the start up of this country. Those are the “important” roles Christianity played in the formation of western civilization. Removing the savages to make room for good Christian bigots.

In addition to the fact that the resolution was not really necessary, and was only introduced in order for some yahoo to claim that Congress is “protecting Christianity”, here’s another problem with it.

That resolution includes this “Whereas” clause -

“Whereas on December 25 of each calendar year, American Christians observe Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of their savior, Jesus Christ”

So, these clowns voted to exclude all Easter Orthodox Christians (who observe Christmas using a different calendar) in the U.S.?

What a bunch of ignorant jerks.

You’re right, I didn’t even think of that part. The 25th of December is neither historically or biblically the birth of Jesus. What a bunch of morons. Here’s what I wrote to my Congressmen in OH that voted for this garbage:
Why did you agree to pass House Resolution 847, recognizing the importance of Christmas and Christians? Is it your intent as a Congressmen to alienate citizens of this country that don’t believe in Christ? Is it your intention to dissolve the separation of church and state? It seems to me these can be the only reasons such a foolhardy resolution was passed on the House floor. You and all the reps that voted for this have gone completely over the edge of decency in promoting such garbage. We have so many issues to deal with these days and someone felt it was important to recognize Christmas? Where have you been for the past 7 years? Sipping egg nog by the fire? We have serious problems here and abroad and Christmas is not one of them. Wake up and stop handing this horse dung to the American people. We deserve better. Try reading what you vote for. The statements in this resolution clearly support the genocide of Native Americans. At least that’s how I read resolution 4 which says”(4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization;” The role played by Christians in the founding of this country is historically terrible. Does our Congress really want to stand in support of murdering millions of native people over religious difference? That’s not the United States I want to live in.

Not the language I normally like to use in contacting my Congressmen, but this is just wrong, unconstitutional, biblically inaccurate, racist, dogmatic, just plan wrong in every way.

Followed dr4lom’s example and gave my rep an earful.

    God!

When are they going to field a resolution recognizing Zeus and the Greek Pantheon of Gods for being important to the historical formation of Democracy, and thus of course, important to our Western civilization and culture?

And how about Odin and Thor and Frey and company without whom the days of the week would be so bland?

And the Romans Gods? Our solar system would be so empty without them.

It’s kind of amusing seeing people get so bent out of shape over something they claim is so trivial and not worthy of Congress’s time.

Jay, I’m never one to refer to you with the invectives you get from CS, so please understand that your comment above, all on its own, makes me wonder if you are, in fact, being deliberately idiotic.

Debating and legislating “the importance of Christmas” is trivial. It is not trivial to discuss why that legislation is trivial.

“Debating and legislating “the importance of Christmas” is trivial. It is not trivial to discuss why that legislation is trivial.”

And an official House resolution all but declaring this a Christian country (and hemisphere, no less) is not trivial.

Spider, have you read the comments above? Where do you see people discussing why the resolution (it’s not legislation) is trivial? Yeah, the claim is made that’s trivial. Wonderful.

But then everybody is going on not to just discuss the resolution being trivial but how horrible and harmful it is to the country. I mean, really. Support for the genocide of Native Americans? Puh-lease.

Does anybody know how many useless and non-binding resolutions Congress passes on a yearly basis? As such if Midderpidge wants a resolution passed honoring Zeus and Thor, go right ahead.

Jay, your attempt to make this line of commenting trivial is out of place here. What this resolution says is not what we want our Congress standing behind. Not only is the language of the resolution dangerous, it’s wrong. Yes, Congress passes a lot of these “useless” resolutions, but for something like this to pass so overwhelmingly is a problem I think. It’s a problem because it tells us two things(even though we already knew them):
    1. that Congress is not spending it’s time working towards progress in the areas that are important to its constituency.
    2. that Congress is turning belly up for the fundamentalist Christian right.

Sure these aren’t grand discoveries, as I said we already knew them, but it is worth going off on because it’s appropriate.

I don’t care if Congress passes 3 billion resolutions a day. When they pass one that I disagree with, I write my Congressmen and I bitch about it. It’s not only my right to do so, but it’s the best way to approach the problems described above. Perhaps you don’t believe those are problems. Perhaps you feel Congress should waste its time on a regular basis and overwhelmingly support the Christian right and it’s efforts to force this country to abolish the concept of a separation of church and state. If all of that is true, I’m afraid we’ll have to agree to disagree because you fall into a category I call “batshit crazy”. Thanks for playing.

Not only is the language of the resolution dangerous, it’s wrong.

Give me a break, ok? Dangerous? There is nothing dangerous about it.

As for it being some kind of capitulation to the dreaded “Christian right” I suggest you get off the caffeine. It discusses Christianity and Christmas Day in a way that Christians accept universally. There’s nothing political about what they said, which is why it was passed so overwhelmingly.

And believe me, I wouldn’t be able to sleep, eat, work or spend time with my family if I had to write emails every day to Congress telling them how they’re wasting time. Getting all worked up over a resolution that will be added to a pile of resolutions that could probably reach the moon is not something I’m interested in doing and quite frankly, find your ‘outrage’ to posturing more than anything else.
