I find it ironic that "jed", a self-described libertarian lawyer turned over the IP address without: a) asking what the police what the inquiry was b) asking if the matter was urgent or if he could think about it for 3-5 days c) consulting with the EFF or other lawyers I don't think that Joe Average Blogger needs to protect the IP addresses of a commenter, but I also don't think that a lawyer should fail to understand there are free speech issues involved and that if there is a need the police can get a warrant.
