The link about the troll whose IP address was turned over to the cops is interesting, as well as the followup post over there about the ethics of the situation and what might have been done.
I find it ironic that “jed”, a self-described libertarian lawyer turned over the IP address without:
a) asking what the police what the inquiry was
b) asking if the matter was urgent or if he could think about it for 3-5 days
c) consulting with the EFF or other lawyers
I don’t think that Joe Average Blogger needs to protect the IP addresses of a commenter, but I also don’t think that a lawyer should fail to understand there are free speech issues involved and that if there is a need the police can get a warrant.
