This isn’t quite true. Let me note that I find Imus unfunny and obnoxious, but this isn’t quite true.

“Nappy-headed hos” is not empirically a racist turn-of-phrase. It is crude and offensive and slanderous, but it is not in and of itself “racist.” It is a combination of terms used over and over again in rap culture.

Imus’ mistake was not realizing that he, as a white man, is not allowed to use these words in the same way that a black man is tolerated for using these words.

This does not inherently make him a racist. It makes him stupid as hell, but does not mean he is necessarily a racist. It barely compares, for example, to O’Reilly’s Adventures in Harlem.

He said something racist. He didn’t even realize it was racist at the time. This is damn hard evidence that he is racist.

He also interviewed Dick Cheney and other high-ranking politicians. If he wants to be like Howard Stern, that’s his right. But if he wants to be a political interviewer, then he should be held to a higher standard.
