Conservatives & Racism

This post hits on some earlier things I’ve talked about here, about how conservatives won’t acknowledge the fact that racist strategies have been at the heart of conservatism in America for a long time. The usual dodge we see here is that they say "Democrats" were the ones practicing racist politics. Of course, as someone who is proudly a Democrat I totally acknowledge that it was conservative Democrats who pursued racist policies. At the same time I take pride that the moderate and liberal wings of the party took a stand in favor of civil rights to their immediate political detriment. It’s also a fact that those conservative Democrats found a home… in the Goldwater-era Republican party (and those moderate to liberal Republicans eventually found they had no role in the party of Lincoln and became Democrats).

Modern conservatism and the Republican party largely ignores their role and continues to blame everyone else while scratching their heads while wondering why every minority group in America (blacks, hispanics, asians, native Americans, etc.) are not in their camp even when they share some of the party’s values.

What’s a better reasoning: Democrats use magic and voodoo to fool minorities into voting for them OR the Republican party is still kinda okay with being racist?

  1. Kind of okay? I think their policy towards racism now is, “Just don’t get caught.”

  2. SpiderJ says:

Well, to be fair, CS, that’s their policy towards everything these days.

  3. Yeah. They have no morals beyond that. If the ‘moral majority’ could see that, they would never be elected again.
