It seems funny, I know. But it really is a big deal, and a technological mountain. We threw unbelievable amounts of money and manpower at the task. And we did it to meet minimum requirements. I would bet China’s lunar probe is ten times as fault tolerant as ours were; they haven’t been in a hurry…
Unfortunately we are at least 10 years from returning to the moon ourselves.
Stopping lunar exploration was one of the dumbest things the US has done in the last 40 years. And we have done a lot of dumb things in that time span.
Everyone with any actual knowledge of how to get to the moon has retired or died. We now have to reinvent the wheel.
This post triggered me to look into one of my old internet favourites – moon landing truthers.
I remember posting 2 years ago in response to reports that the european space agency’s SMART-1 was going to show definitive pictures of the lunar landing sites etc. that no-one could deny (of course expecting claims of faked photos etc. but still it would be good to see it).
Well, a year on from that probe smashing into the surface of the moon, i still do not have that photo because apparantly it doesn’t exist. All i can find is threads saying it is a done deal in response to the original reports and then crickets when these alleged photos failed to appear.
Hopefully the Chinese will get some or the NASA LRO next year.
Anyone know of any further info ?

Sadly, I wouldn’t be so sure that the won’t beat us to the moon… and to mars.
“beat us to the moon”? um ….

Your barb would have a sharper sting, OW, had we done much lately to demonstrate that we can get back to the moon.
