Fox Sports’ John Czarnecki raises the issue of whether the Super Bowl should be changed from its AFC vs NFC format. His reasoning is that things are too lopsided in favor of the AFC, or something. It’s idiotic. I remember when the AFC couldn’t buy a Lombardi back in the ’80s, and furthermore he wants to introduce some system that looks like the BCS.
Um, don’t people hate the BCS, and haven’t they been clamoring forever that the NCAA should build a playoff system that’s more like the NFL’s? Sheesh. AFC vs NFC is what it is and what it should be.
I must say, I love how everyone is already writing the storyline about the unbeaten Colts and the unbeaten Patriots playing each other in a couple of weeks. The Colts play Carolina and the Patriots play my Redskins this coming Sunday. NFL history is littered with strong teams who got punked by the teams they marked as “gimme” on their schedules – there’s a reason we haven’t had an undefeated team since 1972. I don’t discount the Patriots as a ludicriously strong team, but to quote an old cliche:
Thats.
Why.
They.
Play.
The.
Game.
(Plus, tackle Chris Samuels’ mom is praying for the ‘Skins.)

True about the “trap” games, although what strikes me about these two teams (Colts and Pats) is that they’re so not complacent about any team they face that it almost comes across as paranoid. Fins fans have been grumbling all week that the Patriots “ran up the score” at the end of the game, but Belichek was absolutely right in that no lead is truly safe in the NFL. (I recall a Bucs/Colts game a few years ago where Manning pulled a ridiculous comeback job in the last eighth of the game.)
The ranking system in college in general is such a joke. What’s wrong with playoffs? I know the old excuses about them being college students and not pros or something or other, but I’ve always been a strong supporter of football as a major. If you can major in filmmaking, you should be able to major in football.
