Steve Clemons of the Washington Note is very knowledgeable about global policy and all its ebbs and flows, but he makes the same mistake in this piece for Salon that so many in the foreign policy “establishment” do. Clemons assumes that Bush would not attack Iran because it wouldn’t make any sense. The problem is, these are not people governed by sanity. In 2002, as Bush and the Republicans campaigned against Democrats as to how tough they where to whip their genitals out to oust Hussein, I assumed that all the talk about invading Iraq was bravado. I seriously thought to myself: they couldn’t be that stupid.
I was wrong. Really wrong. Before this administration there have presidents of both parties who have done things that people can clearly disagree about on policy, but we had a long tradition of not being completely insane in the White House. Things have changed. We have a political leader and at least 25% of the population that supports them that quite literally live in a different world from the rest of us over the last seven years. In that world the bold wartime leader George W. Bush has presided over two succesful wars, has Al Qaeda on the run, has not squandered our federal budget and is a master orator. Anybody mentally deficient enough to believe that program let alone lead it, is clearly dumb enough to attack Iran.

I didn’t bother reading the article, I read the title and realized that he made a mistake by assuming rationality.
Hey, they need those campaign contributions from the war profiteers.
Disgusting assholes.
I think Clemons is saying this time the military won’t go along. I seem to remember reading in Richard Clarke’s book about how when the military doens’t want to do something they make all kinds of excuses for why it can’t get done.
At this point, it seems likely that the generals and admirals will try and delay any option for an attack until Feb. 09 by saying they don’t have whatever it is they need to get it done.
You mean like how they resisted invading Iraq?
Wow! I am amazed by some of the ignorant freaks that post here.
Oliver, are you pro-Communist? Do you hate capitalism? If you answered in the affirmative to either of these questions, then you should not read on, it may be embarrassing.
Does anyone remember that Saddam paid millions of dollars out to the families of any suicide bombers. Just that fact alone warrants his removal. Does anyone remember that the UN documented WMDs after Desert Storm in 1991? Does anyone remember the many many times that Saddam’s SAMs shot at our F-15s that were patrolling the No-Fly Zone?
How about the Oil for Food Scandal in the UN? Saddam’s brother owned that bank that maintained the bank account from which oil money was used to purchase food for Iraqis. Never mind that the UN could get more than 10% of the food to Iraq before it spoiled. Much of the money from this bank account was used to bribe UN Security Council member state’s officials from Russia, China, France, UK, and even some of that money made it into the campaign coffers of Pres. Clinton through wanted criminal Mark Rich next to the millions from Chinese communists.
This oil money given to Pres. Clinton is setting next to the millions from Chinese communists who purchased a secret rocket system from him. This rocket system is primarily used in ICBMs, which is why the Chinese wanted it. Now they are pointed at us. These millions from the Chinese to Pres. Clinton were also to get Chinese Aviators from the Chinese Air Force to our Navy’s Top Gun School to glean as much info as possible out of it.
So now Oil for Food money is buying Saddam time and eventually removal of his sanctions, which was the rumblings in the background at the UN.
When Pres. Bush mentioned in ‘03 that the mission was complete, this was taken out of context by our “lovely” media later on. In fact, “mission complete” was in reference to the ship that he was on and its crew. They were on their way back to US to finish their tour, and he was thanking them for their contribution to the war effort. He also declared “major combat operations” to be over. Yes, we had won the war in about 3 weeks. From then on we have been trying to win the peace. He believed that he had the brains in D.C. to help make that a reality. It is just sad to see those that hate nationalism, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness continue their diatribe toward their love for communism and handcuffs on us all.
Thank you, men and women of our armed forces in the US! Thank you, also, to the families of these fine individuals! Thank you!
I took David Kamps advice and didn’t bother to read on.
I could literally smell what was coming.
