He's made a step in the right direction, even though it's in his own self interest. Other prominent members of his party (*cough*Cheney*cough*), who also have gay children, haven't backed down from their hard-line stances. Being open to new ideas and new information is a sign of wisdom, and that's a rarity in the republican party. Mayor Jerry Sanders does deserve some credit, though. First of all, Jerry Sanders was always in favor of civil unions; he's only recently come to the realization that this is a "separate-but-equal" distinction. Secondly, where do you get that he "just found out" his daughter was a lesbian? Your link said only that he "revealed to the public" that his daughter was a lesbian. Thirdly, watch the press conference. His daughter doesn't come up until the end of his speech, after he's stated his soul-searching in very emotional terms.
