Unprincipled Conservatives

The mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders, is making waves today for flip-flopping in favor of gay marriage after finding out that his daughter is a lesbian. Isn’t it odd how conservatives feel free to legislate these things but then when it impacts their family – for instance Sen. Hatch supporting stem cell research – they all of a sudden change their minds.

When all you’ve ever been concerned about is yourself, it’s not hard to see different decisions made when the chips fall the other way.

And that’s the key difference between liberals and RightWingers: The Good Guys to the right thing even when it doesn’t directly effect us.

Hold up, Oliver. This is not the Big Gotcha Flip-Flop you think it is.

First of all, Jerry Sanders was always in favor of civil unions; he’s only recently come to the realization that this is a “separate-but-equal” distinction.

Secondly, where do you get that he “just found out” his daughter was a lesbian? Your link said only that he “revealed to the public” that his daughter was a lesbian.

Thirdly, watch the press conference. His daughter doesn’t come up until the end of his speech, after he’s stated his soul-searching in very emotional terms.

Jerry Sanders had a realization that his previous positions were wrong. Why do you need to shit all over that?

Mayor Jerry Sanders does deserve some credit, though. He’s made a step in the right direction, even though it’s in his own self interest.

Other prominent members of his party (*cough*Cheney*cough*), who also have gay children, haven’t backed down from their hard-line stances. Being open to new ideas and new information is a sign of wisdom, and that’s a rarity in the republican party.

Unlike Romney, at least he’s flip-flopping in the right direction.
